Honestly, the movie will probably be just fine, even if the CGI & special effects seem worse than the first one's (or just way overused). The movie is just unlikely to enhance the original, while being tied down by its legacy.

Could you imagine if every time a Scottish actor, like the late Sean Connery was in a film, the people who create trailers for his movies would have played the bagpipes in the background to emphasize his Scottish heritage!? Could you imagine Sean Connery's James Bond films, all having trailers where the Bond theme is played by bagpipes? If that sounds awful, this is precisely how we feel whenever Hollywood insists on putting rap music whenever a Black cast member is on screen. Its pandering and its patronizing.

      Monies. Lotsa monies.
It's the same with pretty much any sequel that isn't planned from the start. Gladiator (2000) was the story of Maximus. It wasn't really a historical movie in any way other than incidentally that happened to be the backdrop they chose. While there was an Emperor Commodus, and while he did occasionally dabble in arena sword fighting, he was never killed by a gladiator who used to be a Roman general. So it's a period fictional drama, nothing more. It had a start, a middle, and a satisfying--if historically inaccurate--conclusion.
But then it became a smash hit and people got lots of money so... yeah, time to tell the "rest" of the fictional story of what happens to Lucius, who was really just a plot device to reveal the plot to Commodus. There is no need to tell "the rest of the story" because there was no rest of the story until it became profitable to write it.

Denzel plays Marcus Macrinus. Marcinus was the first Roman Emperor that rose outside of the Senatorial oligarchy class. He was a Berber from what is considered today as Algeria. He was the Praetorian prefect under the two emperors Geta and Caracalla. basically he was a finance guy for the military and he probably owned slaves and even gladiators. Basically Caracalla grew wary of his rising power and ordered his assassination but Macrinus got to him first and proclaimed himself Emperor there after. However his reign only lasted a year and he to was captured by enemies and murdered.

Which didn't happen in real life because after Comodo there was the "Year of the Five Emperors" which ended when Caracalla and his brother Geta were appointed as emperors until they were... ahem, taken out of the picture, Geta by his own brother and Caracalla by Macrinus. Macrinus became emperor until he was minecrafted too and then others became emperors after him... until the very end of the Roman Empire as we know it.
The Roman Republic ended in 27 BC and the Roman Empire started. Gladiator takes place roughly in 180 AC. Even if Maximus wanted it to be a republic again, History tells us another story.

I have no idea of how Scott is gonna pervert, twist or trample History books, but here's what happened back then according to the records:
Macrinus was born in North Africa, in the city of Cesarea, in what now we know as Argel. He was the son of local nobility of Berber origins (hence he didn't look like Denzel, not even remotely), though they weren't exactly wealthy. He received an education that allowed him to become a lawyer (and a very skilled one, it seems). When he was young the local Praetorian Prefect named him what we would call today "law consultant" (btw, the praetorian prefectures were the highest level administrative divisions in those years, so that post wasn't too shabby). After said praetorian was... uh... taken out of the picture, Macrinus kept working as a Tax Attorney, until Caracalla and Geta were named emperors and Caracalla named him Praetorian Prefect. Years went by and Macrinus is said to have been the instigator of Caracalla's demise, who in turn had carried out the "minecrafting" of his brother Geta, years prior.
So there you have, Macrinus was a bureaucrat, a lawyer and a tax attorney before becoming a "governor" of shorts with military power.

Berbers are considered to have a pretty dark complexion compared to the rest of North Africa. We don't know for sure how dark Macrinus was, but I'm not about to start fussing over melanin content. Are you? While we're at it, let's discuss just how closely Richard Harris and Russel Crowe resembled Mediterranean people.
