    This chapter was really heavy, but I agree it was probably the best chapter so far. This was a genuinely fantastic character study about both Dragona and Jodio.
    Also, I read this on Reddit, but someone said something really cool, which is that this event isn't just the origin of their Stands but could also act as an origin for Jodio's obsession with the idea of mechanism.
    It was the mechanism of society that kept that Girl Bully from being punished, and when Jodio decided to rebel against them and punish her himself, he and his family got indirectly punished by driving their father away and forcing him and Dragona to help their mom in order to survive.
    This, together with the stuff about Howler and the general bad portrayal of authority figures, especially the police, makes me think that a major theme of this part could be about how society as it currently exists is a giant mechanism perverting the natural order of the world by drawing in blessings or fortune for the powerful and wicked while sending misfortunes or calamities to everyone trying to oppose the system.
    We know that this is unnatural because fate, as explained in Part 6, always favors the righteous, so the mechanism of society favoring the evil would be its working against.

      That is a really good prediction. I think there's a lot supporting it. It's basically a version of what Funny Valentine was trying to do in part 7. Using the Holy Corpse and Love Train to make America a prosperous paradise at the cost of making the rest of the world an unlivable hellscape

      @@Chowder_TYou two are cooking. The accumulation of wealth by the richest of the rich has made life worse for the bottom 99%. Their blessings are fewer and they are unjustly punished for bad luck or mistakes. Meanwhile, those who are in the flow of wealth are sometimes even rewarded for their failures, or have a structure in place that let them get away with it and send the consequences to those below.

    Jodio's merciless retaliation against Dragona's bullies, at least in my opinion, isn't an indicator that he's "the villain" (such a statement is silly), but a signifier of how strongly Jodio cares for Dragona.

    • @NeoAya
      @NeoAya 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +60

      It wasn't a retaliation against just their bullies, he set an entire bus on fire. It was full of people who were unlikely to see what had happened since it happened at the back of the bus, hell it's likely that some people who didn't ride the bus the day prior also got on the day Jodio started the fire, and the only reason he stopped it was because he saw a parrot who had no fault in it whatsoever. Those people would have been killed otherwise.
      It speaks to the idea of his questionable morality even from an early age and his labelling of being a psychopath, even Dragona warns him that he shouldn't continue down that path.

Josuke on the other hand is a miracle and representation of positive which of course contrasts with the calamity of wonder of u as well as the negative theme of curses shown throughout part 8.

      Totally agree, I think part 9 is gonna focus on mechanisms and the absurd and how neither of those 2 aspects of fate are inherently good or evil (mechanisms could be used for good or bad ends, and absurd events can be good or bad, tho right now it seems to be framing mechanisms as good and the absurd as bad)
      Edit: an example of a negative mechanism I've thought of is possibly the police, specifically how they and other parts of society seem to act against charmingman searching for his brother

      I've seen people argue that the songs are implying the group splits up before coming back together but I have a different theory.
      It's describing king Crimson's return in the story
      The 1st song is about waiting for a return (being from king Crimson it's about his return imo)
      The 2nd song is about being kept apart (we see king Crimson, but the cast doesn't)
      The 3rd song is about reuniting, the actual clash of king Crimson with our group

    Obligatory "im trans" but i appreciate that Araki depicted this kind of assault on Dragona. Being trans is difficult, and some trans people face treatment that intense, or worse. While i totally understand people being upset about that, i think that its important to show that things like this do happen to trans people, and that stromg people can come from those difficult situations. It also makes me very much appreciate Dragona as a character far more knowing how much they've overcome

    Dragona’s speech about almost dying in the heart strongly reflects to Bucciarati’s final farewell to Giorno. Bucciarati was going to let his soul slowly die for being part of the criminal organisation that kills his hometown, but Giorno’s action changed him to rebel against the Boss when the moment came (when Trish was going to be killed). When part 9 was going to have two protagonists and is a reference to part 5, I strongly felt that Dragona was going to be the Bucciarati of this part.

I genuinely think that it's as Hamon Beat is describing, he's genuinely a bigot who gets mad at people when they use "she" for dragon and resorts to posting pictures of jesus when his transphobia is questioned

    Honestly I think the three protagonists so far show off the whole YinYang thing you were talking about.
    Johnny is the grey protagonist. He does equally as much good as he does bad. He's just kind of a man who rides the line sometimes and while is ultimately a good person is held down by his flaws.
    Josuke meanwhile is a more positive figure. He can be quirky, jokey, and over all is the most just of the three new protagonists. However there's still a deep sense of brutality to him. If somebody hurts those he cares about he'll be ready to beat the ever loving shit out of them, and is absolutely willing to murder rock humans. While he has a sense of mercy he's also willing to kill those he sees as unjust or evil. a bit of a mix of Josuke and Jotaro. He's the yang. Light with a bit of darkness lurking underneath.
    Jodio is the most sociopathic of the three so far. The most likely to murder somebody if they cross him. However there are still humanizing elements to him. He's interested in things a normal boy his age is. Dancing with cute girls, reading manga etc. He's also shown mercy every once in a while. Despite being a harsh person, there's good within him lurking deep within.

    • @doublel1503

      Idk about Johnny being grey. Sure, he has flaws that prevent him from being trully a hero like the Jojos before him, but I don't know if I would call him morally grey.

    • @shikitohno1756
      @shikitohno1756 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@doublel1503 I mean that's where the whole grey thing comes in. A man whose human flaws prevent him from being a full hero. Johnny isn't totally the greatest guy ever but he's not a bad person.
      But won't lie and say that I think out of all of the heroes he's the one that rides the line the most. Johnny has to go through a lot to become a more selfless person, early on he was really in it for himself.
      Remember, even more so than Gyro, Ringo thought that Johnny understood his concept of true mans world. True man's world being a really messed up ideal of needing constant struggle to get stronger. Even Gyro, despite beating Ringo, never seemed to agree with or embody his idea of true man's world. (I know there's the whole "welcome to true man's world" quote, but there's a lot of nuance with that whole arc and the philosophy of true man's world.) Point being Johnny is more naturally violent than Gyro is, even if Gyro is willing to kill people who go after then.
      A whole point is made with Johnny being one of the first characters to have those black flames in his eyes. The eyes of a deadly ambition previous Joestars never had.
      Johnathan was the light that all the later joestars took from. Even if they had some darkness they were generally lighter people than the SBR universe joestars (Save for Giorno who was still pretty dark in his own right.)
      In this new continuity everybody inherits all sides of him. Both the good and bad. Even if he's mostly a good person Johnny's darkness still lurks within Josuke. Even if he's violent and prone to criminal acts Johnny's good is deep inside of Jodio.

  • @gaelc_
    @gaelc_ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I really like the way the story is going, I think the contrast between absurd events and mechanisms are gonna play into some of the later fights or the final opponents stand. We always see this "flow" or "energy" present in the final fight, and I wouldn't be surprised if Jodio's stand turns into something that can cause absurd events to occur to escape the flow of the mechanism to beat the final boss. The idea of heavy rain seems pretty similar to calamity so some control over that energy could be the reason he can do these things compared to how josuke was always using the spin with his stand

    I think this chapter was phenomenal and I agree with basically everything you said in this video. On top of everything you said, I want to add that I think this may rule out jodio truly being a psychopath. Jodio's narration in the first chapter says "I guess that makes me a psychopath," which could imply that while he might be diagnosed with ASPD, he doesn't fully believe that he is one. One of the hallmark indicators for psycopathy is a lack of empathy. When Jodio lights the bus on fire and traps everyone inside, he only puts out the fire because he notices the bird in the window. In real life, some psychopaths are intentionally cruel to animals, so I think Jodio choosing to stop the fire because of the bird, rather than in spite of it, combined with the obvious empathy he shows with Dragona make it possible he really isn't a psychopath. What I think is more likely is that he has a severely warped sense of justice, hence him almost killing everyone inside, but throughout the part will develop into a more righteous one, which could tie into the series' general themes of walking the path of righteousness.

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      IMO Jodio choosing to spare the bus can actually check out with him having ASPD. Even if you lack an instinctual sense of empathy, ethics can still be understood and practiced by sociopaths/psychopaths.
      Eg. A non-sociopath could think "oh, that bird looks terrified, I feel bad for it" and spare the bus. A sociopath could think "oh, that bird didn't do anything wrong" and spare the bus.

    From the very beginning it was made clear that Dragona is gender non-conforming. Discrimination and bullying over that type of thing is completely unavoidable in the real world, and thus anything with any realism is going to find it unavoidable as well. I'm extremely happy to see the stance you take on the matter, as it's extremely refreshing and reassuring.
    JoJo has never been afraid to portray disturbing realities, and this chapter is no different. As a trans individual myself, I found the chapter extremely enjoyable. Seeing Jodio go to such lengths to protect Dragona was a very reassuring thing for me. That section as a whole is extremely realistic, and does a ton to develop the characters and story.
    Again, thank you for taking the stance that you did. The fact that some people in the JoJo community have a problem with it is, if anything, proof that they haven't paid attention to the series at all.
    Edit: Dragona removing their scars is also a wonderful metaphor for overcoming trauma and embracing your identity.

In SBR, many members of the main cast are motivated or at least influenced by their fathers (Johnny, Gyro, Dio and FV) . JLO is very heavily driven by mothers, with the main goal of the part being saving Holly Joestar-Kira, Josefumi's motivations and Toru's death. Now in JJLA, we have siblings as a major theme as there are two sibling Joestars and an ally whose main goal is to find his brother.

    It's interesting how often money is in direct opposition to the characters already this early in the story. Especially with Jodio's mechanism deal. It feels like it's more than just explaining why all the characters got into crime.
    Charmingman was stopped by the cops in chapter 12, who said it costs money to search for people so they won't do it.
    This chapter, Dragona's assault was ignored because of the bully family's money.
    Their father left basically due to money issues.
    Also a corporation is being set up as antagonists.
    The lava rock seems to be the only instance of money working for the characters so far. I'd imagine that the whole part is going to continue to use the 'flow' theme in relation to money. Which seems obvious, based on the 'this is a story of how I got filthy rich' thing - but the point of it might actually be really straightforward as the story already is focusing on money and 'flow' so much.

Not only without it showing, even ignoring that, how was it able to stay in there without falling out? How was he able to do the things he does up to then in the episode with it right below his arm or on his back? It’s a whole ass M1928 Thompson Sub Machine Gun and araki thinks it can just fit in a jacket without showing *AND* without falling out?
    Edit: after watching part 10 I understand how it wouldn’t show, but how would it not fall out? And don’t say he just tied it down with his belt or shoved the barrel in his pants, because that wouldn’t work either. The Tommy gun still would’ve slid down or the fact that only part of it was tied down would’ve made the stock tip back and show from the back of his jacket. Unless hamon can make shit stick to you and he did that somehow just to keep it on him

    I honestly think it's really great to see this kind of representation in manga like JoJo, especially since as queer as the series is known as, it actually doesn't have that much explicit rep. It's mostly Squalo and Tiziano (technically implied but implied so heavily you'd be insane for thinking they weren't an item), Secco and Cioccolata, Sorbet and Gelato, and Scarlet Valentine, and I would not consider Scarlet Valentine to be uh.
    Good bisexual representation. Thankfully Araki seems to be handling Dragona with a ton of care and thought.

    usagi having a stand named after a king crimson stand and the likely enemy being named after a king crimson song makes me suspicious, especially in a part that mirrors part 5. Araki may be bringing back the traitor arc that was supposed to happen with fugo. I dont believe it yet but there are some interesting connections

    I’m really excited to see mechanism and absurdity as the two main opposing forces of the arc
    This looks so promising

    I think King Crimson is going to come back like how the world and killer queen came back in part 7 and 8

    I (personally) view
    Dragona as an umbrella character, both being representation for all gender identities that are similar to trans like non binary etc , this is mainly because Araki doesn’t like explicitly mentioning gender identities/ sexuality’s in his fiction while including a lot of references and alluding characteristics of the character , like Dio being bisexual coded , Jotaro being being coded to have a neurodivergent disorder, this method allows the viewer to more closely associate with the character and allows for a wider range of people feeling represented equally.

    This was an awesome chapter and really shows how crazy Jodio is and can be for sure one of the most messed up things a jojo has done

    I think it would be cool if Jodio and Dragona work in tandem as an extremely powerful force, like the combined power of their abilities. This would develop the yin and yang aspect of their characters and put a greater emphasis on their bond.

    Praying for the Ultra Jump cover and the volume cover next month to be very different illustrations 🤞
    Not that I really have a problem with that. It's been fun to compare the Ultra Jump and volumes covers being that they're different takes of the same drawing, but getting two visually different illustrations would be so cool

    I'm waiting for two things in this part
    1. Who will Jodio become? JOdio or joDIO
    2. Who's the boss~u of Howler and what kind of Stand they have

    Honestly, while I was on the fence on Dragona being ambiguously gendered, as I have some strong opinions both on the trans community as well as their inclusion in media, but it progressively feels like in this instance it was done right. I mean, it feels like it wasn't "I added a trans character to the story" but rather "there are trans people in the world, and it just so happens one of them is a main character" (and in my eyes that is a crucial distinction)(I know the whole thing is rather ambiguous, but I uphold my point still)

    This video was amazing. I really love your take on how people were reacting to the SA. I thought the same thing where it had alreatdu happened so it's just bigotry to single out this one scene.
