2:30:38 I live about 8 miles from where the compiler of SOUTHERN HARMONY (published in 1835) name William Walker, A. S. H.--A. S. H. = author of Southern Harmony--lived and is buried. (I grew up there.) This book is the first documented appearance of the tune "Resignation" that I have been able to find. Interestingly, Walker omitted "Resignation" from subsequent editions of SOUTHERN HARMONY! The first time I ever saw this tune or the words was in junior high school when the librarian at our local public library let me see and handle Walker's personal copy of the 1835 edition. Two or three Sundays later, Linda Brian sang it as a solo at Sunday morning worship. I've love it ever since. THANK YOU FOR PLAYING IT!!!! I REALLY NEEDED THIS TODAY!!!!!!! It has been a most difficult year for me--as for many others. I just discovered your channel--totally by accident. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much! You are doing something that I have longed for, for years. I have watched classical organists play hymns and sadly they turned them into performances to show of their improviational skills and to me they destroyed the hymns they were playing. Your playing on the other hand leads one to worship. Thank you so much! I live in Canada and have played organ and keyboards mostly in evangelical churches though I have played in Catholic churches and currently fill in at the Anglican church in town.

I guess it's too late, but the hymn with the three notes is Rejoice the Lord is King! I am a real twit... I knew it was in my mind and that's because, as I've just discovered while running through the online hymns I'd chosen for our Zoom service today, I'd chosen it for today! What a wally!!!

I loved watching and singing the hymns. But I am just struggling so much with the quiz. I have not managed to get one of the answers. But will give it a bash with the bonus question:-
4356 steps taken (don't think that it is right but at least I tried).
I also think that "For All the Saints" has 8 or 9 verses in a hymn book (but maybe wrong).

Richard, thank you for another fantastic VC.
I *failed horribly* on the hymn tune questions - just need to spend more time in the choir stalls. (Please don't kick me out of VC!!!!) :)
    Here are my answers
    1. I know Hannover as, “Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim”
    2. Beethoven Symphony 6
    3. The great/grand orgue is most commonly lowest manual on french organs
    4. Westminster Abbey organ: this is a “tricksy” one!!! 6 across 4M/Ped *But* could it be 7 if you count the enclosed vs unenclosed choir…
    5. For All the Saints: my VH has 8, so I’ll go with that!
    6. Widor V.5 ends with a plagal cadence
    7. Let all mortal flesh keep silent
    8. - have to pass -
    9. - have to pass -
    10. - have to pass -
    11. G (octave and half above)
    12. - have to pass -
    13. Johann Sebastian Bach: Prelude & Fugue in E minor, BWV 548. “The Wedge” - the expanding chromatic fugue theme inspired the nickname
    14. Yay!! - Rejoice the Lord is King (we had this recently!)
    15. Hereford by Wesley
    16. - have to pass - Dagnabbit, I should know this one…
    17. Quintadeen (but not sure if 16 or 8 :)
    18. St. Pauls
    19. Romsey Abbey (I will admit I did some internet sleuthing on this, and spent some time looking at beautiful church architecture ;)
    20. Your fitbit - 8200 :)

    6. plagal cadence
    7. From "Let all mortal flesh keep silent"

    10. ?
    11. an octave and 5th higher - G
    12. ?

    1) O Worship the king
    2) Something by Buxtehude?
    3) the Choir?
    4) 12 Divisions
    5) 8 most commonly printed - my hymnal just moved to 7 removing the militant sounding verse
    6) Deceptive Cadence
    7) Let All Mortal Flesh
    8) Alto line from... "A tune with a boring alto line"
    9) Tenor line from... "Tenors get some great fun there"
    10) Bass line from... "I don't know, but it was jolly"
    11) This I do know - and octave and a fifth

    14) I call this the "Duh, Tadum" hymn
    15) Hereford, Wesley
    16) Love Divine?
    17) Oboe, or some other nice reed
    18) Salisbury or St. Pauls Cathedral - I have not had the joy of being in very many
    19) Winchester Cathedral - guessing that since you mention it often
    20) 3450

    1. O worship the King
    2. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, 1st movt
    3. Grand Choeur if it has one, or Grand Orgue if not!
    4. 7?
    5. I sing 8 verses in my book!
    6. Plagal
    7. Let all mortal flesh keep silent
    8. Praise my soul, the King of heaven?
    9. Xxx
    10. Xxx
    11. A 12th above, so the second G above middle C
    12. Hark the Herald Angels Sing
    13. Bach’s Fugue in E minor (548). The Wedge. Because the pattern of the notes of the theme draw a wedge shape
    14. Annoying… I know and love the tune... just remembered! Stand up, stand up for Jesus. Nope, that's different notes... it's Rejoice the Lord is King!
    15. Hereford. Samuel Sebastian Wesley
    16. Tune is Blaenwern, usually known for Love Divine
    17. Gedekt?
    18. St Paul’s?
    19. Arundel?
    20. Last time you tried it didn’t work, so maybe it didn’t again! But will try 2,100

    1. O Worship das Koning.
    2. Something from Beethoven.
    3. Grand orgue or great
    4. 1. great 2. choir 3. swell 4. pedal 5. solo 6. positif 7. probably some echo division near the high altar or something 8. maybe another pedal division to go with the echo division. 9. maybe a festive reed chorus of fanfare trumpets and such? So maybe 9 in all? Just guessing.
    5. For All the Saint = I think 8.
    6. I'm thinking some kind of a plagal cadence, although it's all on top of a low C so that doesn't jive, does it? So it must be some kind of authentic cadence. It's not a deceptive cadence and it's not a half cadence. So I'll go with authentic.
    7. Sounds like something from A Mighty Fortress, but I'm going with Abide With Me.
    8. nope (I did not watch all 3 hours so I did not hear the hymn from earlier in the show)
    9. Sounds like I Bind Unto Myself This Day but that's in a minor key so I'm prolly wrong bout that.
    10. nope
    11. G two and a half octaves up
    12. Hark die Herald Angel ZING.
    13. Wedge fugue in e minor, BWV 548 cuz the notes start on e and the intervals increase as the subject expands like a wedge of CHEESE.
    14. Sounds Mormon.
    15. Never heard it before. No idea. Something from Henry Smart?
    16. Nope
    17. That's certainly sounds like a quintadena to me.
    18. It's gotta be St. Paul in London at a whopping 11 seconds. I had a recording from there and you could actually count all 11 seconds with your watch. I suspect Liverpool (Anglican) Cathedral is pretty resonant, too. Btw, the oil tanks in Inchendown, Scottland have the longest reverberation time on earth at an unbelievable 112 seconds. DUDE, CHECK IT OUT!
    19. Well, it's Norman architecture. So maybe Winchester? or Peterborough? I know it's not Durham. I could cheat and look it up but I wont.
    20. Wtf is a fit bit? I have no idea so I am going to look that up so I can at least guess. Wuuuut? it measures steps? I didn't see you walk around much so maybe 27.
    SUCH FUN!

6)Plagal Cadence, though it does hint at a perfect.

OK, here are my feeble answers to the quiz:
    1. O Worship the King
    2. ? No clue.
    3. Grand orgue? (shot in the dark)
    4. ? Again, no clue without Googling.
    5. Looks like eight in most of my older American hymnals on hand.
    6. ? Nope.
    7. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
    8. ?
    9. ?
    10. ?
    11. I should know this ...
    12. ?
    13. Prelude and Fugue in Em, JS Bach, aka "The Wedge" from the chromatic pattern in the fugue theme.
    14. The "Dum de dum" Hymn! ;)
    15. Hereford, by S. S. Wesley
    16. ? I should know this one, too ...
    17. ? And this one ...
    18. Yorkminster ?
    19. ? Nope.
    20. Like I'd be in the running for a top tie, but I'll say 1567.
Lots of fun, even if I will have to wear a dunce cap and pump the organ bellows next time ...
