      I was too until I started thinking of them as basically just a beetle. Pick one up for a minute and then and set it down and The first thing they do is start grooming themselves wiping off your disgusting mammalian oil and sweat since they are really pretty clean creatures .

    Funny thing is that you actually don't even need a lid on the container. As long as it has smooth surfaces. people spend time making a lid for no reason. lol I have had Dubia roaches for a long time. None ever get out and I have them in an open Sterilite container. XD

    It’s taken me about 6 months to finally get adults. I have one leopard gecko that I got when she was a baby. I’d buy 100 at a time when they got to big I’d save them and then buy a 100 more in the size she needed and I just kept doing that until I finally seen adults. This week end I sorted them and now I have 25 female and 8 males to start my colony. The rest that Haven’t changed yet I’ll keep in the grow out tube. So soon enough I will have a unlimited supply of Dubai roaches for her.

  • @adventurousash
    @adventurousash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cricket smell is specifically the dead crickets. If you are on top of cleaning out any casualties, the smell is non existent. That being said, adult crickets are LOUD. Roaches can be cannibalistic, just not nearly as bad as crickets. If you're feeding your roaches regularly you won't have a issue.
    Dubias are the classic, however they aren't the most prolific breeders. Red runner roaches and lobster roaches are also good options. However those two can climb glass. There really isn't a perfect roach. Dubias are closest.
    I'd reccomend keeping two species (in separate tubs). Dubias being one, red runner or lobster being the other.

    they only need heat to breed 👌 people who power breed roaches will use heat to produce more babies,but heat is not necessary.Room temperature is fine and they can be breed at room temperature and be kept very well like this,but if you want them to breed fast and produce LOTS of babies continually,ie you have loads of reptiles,then using heat will do this for you 😉

    Your curlys look different to ours!

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand, there are two types of Curlys. One, they refer to as a Honduran, or Hobby tarantula which is suspected that they may not be true curly hair tarantulas but rather a hybrid form from accidental cross breeding in the hobby. The other is the Nicaraguan Curly Hair which is darker and not quite as curly, in my opinion, than the other. The Nicaraguan is considered by many to be the true curly hair. Much of this is still speculation and I don't think there's any DNA evidence to back this up. I have an adult curly hair that is a brown, almost golden color, and is very curly. The rest of mine, which are slings, are Nicaraguan.

    Hello fellow traveller who was a Floridian as of years ago. Have no idea if you still are, although why would anyone want to leave this paradise,right? lol.I'm seriously considering homing a T or two but know from reptile experience that securing feeders at a reasonable cost is almost half the battle in this type husbandry. Since my investigations have turned up no vegetarian tarantulas it's down to insects and being in Florida there's apparently no legal way to get Dubia or red runners so do you have a source for alternative roaches species you would be kind enough to share? I've done crickets and you're right, they do stink. Meal and super worms I can get and breed and silk worms might be another possibility. Luckily, T's don't consume vast quantities of insects like Chameleons and such. Also, are there any T clubs or organizations in south Florida you are aware of. I'm thinking a reptile show might be the least expensive way to obtain a T or two and the safest as well with winter hard on us now. Really enjoy your videos I've been going through and sorry for all the questions and length of this post and thanks in advance for any help you might be kind enough to provide.

    • @TarantulaHaven

      Hi Robert, unfortunately I can’t offer you any roaches. I suffered huge losses over the summer and am in the process of building my colonies back up. There are local sources, however, where you can get some. I usually pick mine up at Repticon. Premium Crickets usually has some. I just picked up some more this last show in Orlando.
      Also, yes reptile shows are a pretty good place to start if you’re looking for a tarantula. They usually have better prices and no shipping. I highly recommend Beasley Exotics and The Exotic Kingdom. Both are in Florida and have web sites. I know Beasley Exotics has the option for you to buy online and pickup at a reptile show if you’re local. I’m not sure if Exotic Kingdom does but they may.
      Hope this helps. 🤓👍🏼

      @TarantulaHaven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robertolesen5782 that would be great to see you at a show. I forgot to mention. I don’t know how close you are to Ocala, but there is a woman that goes by Donna’s Discoids and she usually posts in some of the local FB pet groups. She sells discoids and usually at cheaper prices than at the shows. They usually run about $1 per roach for medium and adult sizes and less for the smaller sizes.

    What if one going Into T’s is somewhat afraid of roaches? Can I feed superworms as a staple and provide crickets and hisser roach nymphs to add to their diet. What if I don’t plan on having a lot of T’s? Should I just stop by the pet store every once in a while to buy superworms/roaches?

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kenneth Reyes most definitely. I only keep roaches as a staple because I have so many Ts. If you only have 1 or a small number them it may be easier for you just to buy a few crickets or mealworms. Ts will do just fine on them. 🤓👍🏼🕷

  • @victorg7036
    @victorg7036 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Any kind of feeder roach is illegal here in canada and I hate crickets. The escape easy and smell. The only reason I use them is cause my local reptile pet store sell them to me at a really god price. I usually get about 60 or 70 for 3 or 4 dollars. I'm friends with the employees at the store so they just shake a bunch into a container for me. I usually buy 1000 mealworms at expos for about $8 and they last me about 3 months with my geckos.
    For my bigger tarantulas and scorpions I use superworms, cause i like 50 for 2 - 4 dollar. I find they are very easy to keep. Just have a big enough enclosure, cause the will cannibalize, I use wheat bran as a substrate for them and some carrots every once in awhile for them to get there moisture, cause they will die if they get to wet/if the enclosure is too humid.

    So I am going to be getting a bearded dragon soon, should I make a smaller colony for that one dragon or should I make a larger colony? Also where should I get the first set of dubias and how many should I get?

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you're probably going to have to start with a small colony and it will eventually grow. Depending on where you get them from some places will offer a starter colony of 100 roaches for about $20 US. This will contain various sizes from breeding adults down to nymphs. Others will only offer about 20 adults for around $20 US. Of course there are higher numbers for higher prices but I'm just giving you a ballpark figure. As far as where to purchase you can do a search for Dubia Roaches for sale and get several vendors out there. I don't know where you're located so I'm not really sure where to tell you to buy from.

    I just ordered 100 B. discoidalis nymphs. Going to try to start a colony of my own for my herps and T's. Thanks for the video. One question, though. Is a substrate a bad idea for B. discoidalis?

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Substrate is fine, it just makes it difficult to find the tiny nymphs as they'll bury themselves in the substrate. It also makes it a little harder to clean. If you add some cleaner bugs like dermestid beetles you don't have to worry so much about cleaning but you kinda have to know what you're doing with them or they'll eat your roaches too.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Desiree, it takes approximately 3 months for them to go from nymph to adult. I think like 1.5 months to get to medium. This can be slower if your temps aren't high enough. Good question. I may have to do an update to this video to include info about the the roach life cycle etc.

  • @jerumd
    @jerumd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Throw in some buffalo beetle larvae in there, problem solved! I got two jobs, so throwing too much fruits or veggies in my roach bins is enough to scare off any fungus gnats or fruit flies from invading my roach bins simply because these lesser mealworm cleaner beetle larvaes will eat just about anything, including fungus gnat eggs and the flies themselves lol I can even throw some mold prone foods in there like bread without worrying about a thing lol

    Can superworms be used as a staple for scorpions? I will also be raising some hissing roaches as pets and I will feed the nymphs to the scorpions as a treat or another source of food besides superworms. If superworms are a no go, although I could always feed less often if they are fatty, are there any other feeder roaches that are smaller but aren’t fast?

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have much experience with scorpions. I have seen people feeding mealworms to their scorpions, so I would assume it's ok. Red runners are a good feeder source for scorpions but they are fast. You could always use nymph dubias or discoids as well. They're much slower but they do tend to burrow and play dead.

    • @kenjiro2676
