Bro that nails it. I remember being a teen, I also remember being confused AF by the girls always trying so hard to make themselves "beautiful" according to magazines and other women. I mean, shouldn't they be asking men what we want to see if the goal is to be attractive to men?
The female gaze and fem psychology needs to be accounted for in all this. I can't imagine men loading up Instagram and being like "I want all women to look like that." None of us are imposing it on the girls. They do it to themselves.
@@robinfox4440 This is a legitimately important point that not enough people are will to recognize because of political or ideological predispositions. Men under the age of 50 are not attracted to Botox or excessive surgery. Men have never been attracted to women with visible ribcages, and they haven't been attracted to pencil thin stomachs since the 1950s. Right now the most "in" look for the male gaze, I find, is natural and uncontrived - women who look normal basically (Especially amongst younger generations. I would argue that this is probably in reaction to the widespread 'fakeness' that they've had shoveled at them in excess, peaking with the Belle Delphine horde). That's not to say that there aren't dogs out there, there are, but I'm just speaking as a whole.
Women often maintain a perception of friendliness and openness amongst each other, but I've seen enough to know that they can be and often are utterly vicious to each other. That warm, welcoming veneer it seems is highly conditional.

I used to be with a Korean girl who has this issue. She was 19 at the time and already had her lips, cheeks, and breasts done. I kept telling her that she was already beautiful, but she kept saying that it's not enough.

I stopped using Facebook back in 2018. It didn't cure my depression, but boy did it help.
I think I made my account as a teenager and stopped using it after less than a year. I might've been 16, because I remember seeing my sister post a few pictures of her son climbing a tree, but even back in 2012 or whatever, I didn't feel like it was for me.

It creeped me out very deeply for whatever reason when i saw people taking out their phones and taking a picture of a plate of food instead of just eating like a normal person would, to this day i don't know why but it was so bizarre i just quit it.
@@kookoo9235 My dad made a cookbook a few years ago and I got a chuckle out of seeing him take pictures of the finished product like those people would. Of course, he had an actual reason for it, but it was still bizarre and funny.

My big question is who creates and imposes these beauty standards? Because I know for sure it isn't men. For example, none of my friends's wives or girlfriends look like anything close to their "type". The only thing they have in common is their personalities, most of them work as nurses, teachers and stuff like that, and they are very carring and sweet people. So again, who creates and imposes these damn beauty standards? There are objective beauty traits, like symmetric features, big eyes, clear skin, and stuff like that, but what is weird is that these artificial beauty standards don't even coincide with what has been proven to be objective beauty traits.
When bad people are in charge of defining beauty only ugliness and insanity can follow.

the funniest part about all this plastic surgery is that most of the time people end up looking way worse after getting it done. That younger kardashian or the blonde girl actress from The Boys are good examples. They looked super beautiful organically, now they look so fake and grotesque.

About 33 here, as of these last years,i have come to terms with my physique and face. I have come to welcome my own imperfections, they made what I am.
Otherwise, I would be a mixture of beauty standards making me average Joe all over again. Natural imperfections make you stand up above all the rest.

I plan to have a hair redistribution surgery done this year. It is quick, as safe as surgeries can go, and risk is accecptable. It is also relatively cheap for a surgery.
This is because, as mentioned in the video, my hair thinning so much damages my confidence, and unlike other characteristics in which people like a whole spectrum, nobody likes a bald/balding man. If the surgery doesn't work and I have to shave my head, well, at least I only spent money to try some other outcome.
If it were like the older ways of doing hair transplant when they took a portion of your skin, etc, I wouldn't do it, because that is too invasive for me.
I would never do something as drastic and damaging as what these people are doing, but on the other hand, I cannot just point at them.
Not dissing you. But apparently quite a cultural difference. At least generally, people don't care if person is bald where I live. People who are clearly going bald but try to hide might be mocked tho. If I were going bald myself, I would happily shave my head completely bald. Hell, when I was in the army, being bald was really nice and a good solution. And stylish too.

I wonder if the 18.2% of cosmetic surgeries being done by kids 13-19 statistic includes braces, because then that number would make a lot more sense to me.

Do braces count as surgery? It's cosmetic to a point but most of the time your mouth functions better and is healthier with straighter teeth
@@nef36 From a medical standpoint yeah, a lot of dental work can fall into that category, which is why I asked the question. Not strictly necessary, so they are optional 'cosmetic' procedures a lot of the time. 18% of all cosmetic surgeries being performed by people under 19 doesn't make a lot of sense to me otherwise. If they are counting things like acne treatments and dental work though, I can easily see how they came to that figure. However, it would be very disingenuous of them to use those numbers to argue the toxic effects of social media.
I always find it hilarious when women talk about how much pressure is put on them, are we not going to acknowledge the absolutely ridiculous "six feet tall, six pack, six figure salary" expectation put on men?

I had surgery for a deviated septum. Yeah, my nose bled. Yeah, it felt like my nose was bruised from being punched. I still slept like a baby. Now I can smell and breathe perfectly. Totally worth it.
The plastic surgery in Korea is scary, I've seen a documentary about it, they showed the entrance to a clinic and they had a huge jar full of jaw bones they'd taken out of patients.

I'm a dude, not a dudette, so I can't fully understand.
It's less common, but men struggle too. We see height, glasses, voices that aren't somewhat deep, lack of muscle, etc made fun of on TV & in school. It gets to some of us who start to honestly think "I'm short... No woman can ever possibly like me. Sigh, I'll just grow to 90yo & die alone." I ended up working out 6 days a week just to match up to what's seen as attractive on TV which... So silly how we do that. I felt so worthless I was considering resignation until I met my first GF.
Fortunately for me in 2005, when I was 17 (old) I met my first GF, Amy. When she first started bluntly confessing her feelings I was SO programmed by society to think "short=undesirable, not a man, give up, trying is a waste of effort and time" that I thought to myself "great, this cute girl is pulling a cruel prank on me!" I didn't say it. I thought "must be a prank, I mean a gorgeous girl like her couldn't be into me... Right?"
Well... Not a prank.
She, by dating me, unknowingly created a confident man in me. Thought I shouldn't even try until she showed me I was wrong.
Very innocent. We were both Christian (both still are) so her dad didn't need to give me the death stare he did, a gun hanging beside his chair on the wall. Loaded? Dunno. I'd NEVER do anything bad (you know) anyway as it's not exactly Christian & immoral to begin with, but he, no joke, would've killed me. He was a lil psycho.
Now for some funny uncomfortable stuff that LEGIT bugged me. Picture this... She was 5'11", taller than my mother, dad, stepdad & uncle. My height? Before I met her I'd NEVER mention my height until I knew you for 1-2 years. Mom is 4'10", dad was 5'6". I landed around the middle at 5'3".
Now think about this, a 5'11" girl hugs her 5'3" BF... Hugging always freaked me out. I never do dirty stuff due to my faith, so getting hugged was stressful... Her chest being quite large made that worse. Yes, I know most guys would like that. In fact, one friend of mine, Dennis, saw this & gave me the "it should've been me!" Expression. She didn't mind! 1 time she did when her dad was looking at her sister & I was thinking "he's gonna turn his head, see this, grab that gun in his chair (side pocket of a recliner) and goodbye everyone."
Call me a wuss, but it legitimately stressed me out & made breathing difficult. Maybe I should've carried around a box to stand on lol.
Confidence is key. Women actually began to approach me after I gained the confidence from what Amy did. My appearance hadn't changed, I just became confident & a few other things like becoming outgoing, not shy. I'd NEVER have bone lengthening procedures done. This is the body I was given, why change it? Besides, gaining 2-4 inches from that procedure won't change anything inside you, the insecurities. That insecurity can easily live on. Your appearance isn't as important as you think. Grow instead as a person & I promise things will change.
Women, according to my friends and mother, like seeing confidence in men. They find it attractive. Being a little taller is useless if you never grew inside.
I mean I look the exact same as I did when no women were interested. All that changed was what's inside this thick forehead of mine. I grew inside. Now I get asked out often. If I, a teeny tiny microscopic lil 5'3" guy (lol) can do that then so can you!
A confident man or a guy who's so insecure he actually had bone lengthening surgery done thinking that was the source of his problems. So, which one?

Instagram has really preyed upon women's insecurities with the whole filter thing. And it's also frustrating to us men, because it's all there to hide what the woman really looks like.
I remamber when i was in 4th to 7th grad some of the "popular" girls in my class startet to use Instagramm and stuff and began to mob me because i said it was fake and i didnt use it. Fun times... and know the hole world is like that. It is so sad.
I became a lot happier when I deleted social media. Now I just eat food and play total war games and I realize that I don't need to live up to the standards of others to be happy.

Nah, people always have wanted to put up fronts. Even before social media. It's just even more pronounced with social media. That they want to show off that they are doing well. Even if they aren't actually doing so. Things just get more pronounced, as tech advances.
The "omg super pretty" stereotypical instagram look isn't even that pretty. Maybe it's just that I have a preference for "cute" rather than the "glamorous supermodel" style but a normal girl taking a picture with a kind of low quality camera ( bad quality equipment helps smooth out the skin without photoshop) is going to look 100x prettier than someone who's had a dozen plastic surgeries to look "good" for the camera imo.
Also most countries let you *drink* alcohol at almost any age (many countries have no age restrictions, others have it set ridiculously low, like the UK has it set to 5), just not in public, and you can't buy it.

My brother was visiting me with his wife and 7 year old son.
My brother and me were catching up over a beer when my seemingly endlessly curious nephew ask what we were drinking so I told him.
He asked to try some and, after checking with his dad, I handed him my can.
He took one small sip, immediately spat it out on the floor and called it gross.
Cue laughter from grownups.
Now my nephew knows beer doesn't taste nice and won't be easily swayed by peer pressure in a few years.

@@Roggor yep. Honestly outright banning it is kinda dumb. I didn't touch alcohol until like 28 because I had experiences with it as a kid and it tasted like ass. It still tastes like ass but when sufficiently mixed it has a nice effect (ironically typing this whilst very intoxicated). but still, not something I do every day, don't need to.
I'm a classically attractive man since the age of 16. Nonetheless, I've always been relatively unpopular with the ladies. Why? Because I'm emotionally and otherwise socially unavailable, a dry conversationalist, and unfashionable. These are huge factors that go both ways. The same way they overpower the huge physical advantage I have, if you excel in these areas, it will overpower physical disadvantages.
People are not just agents, bodies, personalities, or stories. We are a combination of all these things and more, and most people have a sense of this when choosing whom to align with.
Know your shortcomings, and be understanding of how others perceive them. Work on them while expanding your horizons.

Okay, sometimes a person is born with a quite...unfortunate facial feature, which I think is fine to correct. And accident victims etc. of course too. But the vast majority of these cosmetic surgeries make a person uglier in my opinion. And this might be quite an old fad... but what the heck is the point of those ugly duck lips? To prevent you from drowning because your mouth is always above the surface of the water because it floats?
As much as i hate people getting exploited, thanks to them surgery has improved and became affordable(for the most part)
As a parent, I wouldn't let my children, especially my daughters, to have Instagram until I can at least feel that have developed some sense of self.
Instagram and other apps like that should be 18+, in my opinion. At least 16+.
Parents are concerned with their teens smoking, drinking or watching porn. For me, this is worse than those three. The consequences of smoking and drinking can be bad, but they also tend to go heal with time. Porn warps your perception of sex and that is bad, but at the same time, I think that it is more obviously fake, it is not as insidious.
I think that the damage that social media cause to people still developing is to some degree permanent and for life, because it will warp your sense of self when you are developing it.
In summary, I would rather find out that my teen drinks a beer on the weekend with her friends than finding out that she is obsessed with Kim Kardashian and she is considering a butt lift.
Well, success in romantic relationships greatly improves mental health, and physical appearance significantly impacts that. Other areas of life are affected, too. We can delude ourselves that looks don't matter, but that's simply not true.
I believe the culprit is the impossible beauty standards, not plastic surgery, enabling miserable people to live dignified lives.

She’s getting married and she has zero plastic. You only get plastic surgery if you’re that desperate, but it’s mostly a rich kid thing now. It cost so much money just for a face adjustment just so you can try and fish for people in the sea. You have the right to do what ever you want at 18 but don’t cry and moan about it if you still can’t find a date if.

...It has now occurred to me that I've never actually given any thought to what "plastic surgery" even means, beyond it being simply being that silly thing the celebrities do. I'm not sure what visual was in my mind, but violent, intrusive, gruesome actual surgery was certainly not it. Das scary stuff.
its so weird that cosmetic surgery seems so much like a drug addiction. Some people can just get a thing or two touched up and thats the end, and others cant stop until they look like a bogdanoff twin.

No, it wasn't as bad, but we definitely did have this problem in society before social media. It's to the point where, online or in person, you aren't supposed to talk about any negatives in your life unless in a way to fish for sympathy, or do anything but present your best face to the public (metaphorical, and literal) and make it beyond your best with lies and photoshop and filters and luxury goods that are a bad investment at your income, and surgery, and adopting habits of social classes above you, and even changing your accent, etc.
It's just part of this masquerade people seem to want to live in and get angry when someone doesn't participate, because they don't want the world how it actually is. Like how everyone talks about how fake politicians are, but they only vote for the fake ones.

I never understood the Kardashians or their fame, the look they have is not attractive and never was. To me they seemed like those kinds of people that were rich and famous BECAUSE they were rich and famous, but never actually did anything besides just exist.
It amuses me that Vtubers are in a way another step down this same road for influencers, but also a healthier one because it's OBVIOUSLY not real, and while it IS pretty to look at it sidesteps the unconcious focus on one's physical appearance because the Vtuber is a static cosmetic appearance, a digital masquerade. And yet... donning that masquerade allows you to disregard how people think about your looks, and lets your actual personality shine through.
What an ironic paradox. The masquerade is healthier than fretting about your appearance.
IDC either way. Beauty is both in the eyes of the beholder and eminently transient. We'll all get old and wrinkly. If all I cared about was my SO's beauty I'd be doomed to a shallow, empty relationship.
I can only hope and prey that anyone I end up in a relationship with would see me for me like ai do for them, rather than how I look or the contents of my wallet.
