    I'm awfully proud of the acceptances my kid got but I think I'm even more proud that they WITHDREW their applications to a couple of excellent schools because they realized these schools just weren't a match. This self-awareness I think means the choice they made was the best one for them.

    Once students get into college, they get wrapped up in rankings, which leads to choosing a college only based on prestige. I would recommend incoming students to not be obsessed with these rankings because, in the end, you won't do well unless you're in an environment you love.

    • @naughti_penguin2340

      Obsessing over rank is pointless, there will always be someone better than you at something.

      @@naughti_penguin2340 I don't think it's pointless, for me trying to be the best (aka obsessing over rank) is one of the main factors that drives me to do something and sometimes makes me enjoy it too, or to get better at it, I might love the subject but If I don't have the drive to be the best, I might not try to improve as much and will "Just try to enjoy it" and if trying to enjoy it is all that matters then I might aswell play videogames all day and watch netflix.

    • @naughti_penguin2340

      @@dragondaniel0574 I don't necessarily think anything is wrong with that; however, a lot of people make their achievements/prestige their entire identity. This leads to depression when (if) you hit a brick wall. That's what I consider "obsessing over rank".

    So first hello, I have seen a lot of talk about the 2020-2021 admission cycle being more selective because of the large number of seniors deciding to take a gap year because of the pandemic and telling the colleges that they will attend in the fall of 2021 so they don’t feel like their wasting money on online classes. I was wondering how will this effect my class (2021) when it comes to acceptance rates.

      I’ve heard a lot of people say this, but I think it just depends. The sooner they reopen the states, then the less likely it will be majorly affected. I know most of the people I know plan on going to college they decided on as of rn

    I recently turned down an acceptance offer from a top 10 school and i’m now going to a to a very prestigious state school. It all came down to what I wanted in the future and if it was going to be the same if I went to either. I decided I would probably end up at grad school no matter what undergrad I had. It was tough giving up the clout I would get if I went to the top 10 school, but I really weighed in all the factors so that HOPEFULLY I don’t regret it!

      Michael Hung I feel you, man. I turned down 3 acceptances to Ivies for Duke and I honestly think it’s the best choice I could have made for myself. Yeah the clout would’ve been great, but if you were good enough to be accepted there, you honestly have the ability to thrive anywhere, so you might as well get the experience you want. Good decision, man

      If you have the goods, you have the goods. Your success will be about you, not the college you attend. Studies have shown that students who get into "elite " colleges but do not attend have pretty much the same or even better outcomes. You made a good, mature, financially prudent decision. Good luck to you.

    This was huge in my college application process! I made sure to craft my list so that even if I got rejected by all my schools except one I would be ecstatic and super excited to attend that college! The college search process is often overlooked and underrated but I think it’s actually one of the most important first steps in a successful college application process!

    What if I feel like I regret my decision? What if I internally wanted to go to a prestigious school that did not offer a lot of the majors I was interested in, was a large school and it seemed to have a lot of good clubs and organizations..basically stuff that is irrelevant to getting a degree? I realize the fact that I wanted to go that particular school bc it seemed like a good way to break out of my shell and be more social, a thing I craved in high school. My parents did not let me go out at all with friends.That was really the reason I wanted to go, but I chose another college I was less interested in in that aspect, because I knew that in the end, it is my career that matters. And I realize that to socialize, you can socialize anywhere. But why do I have feelings of regret if I did it for my own good and it's just a college?

    • @hannahpanda365
      @hannahpanda365 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I went through something similar recently. I think we can really get wrapped up in prestige and the “college experience” bc socially that’s what everyone is focused on. I found myself regretting my decision bc i could’ve missed out on more social or career oriented activities and it took me time to realize and accept that i chose what was right for me and thats enough. This is about you!! focus on that and don’t worry too much about the social life. if u get involved in sure you’ll find great friends and activities ! good luck !

    Correct. Always look at your backup major options. I regret my college choice. It was cheap and my gut feeling school. It’s a great school but I realized I wanted to do a different major that they didn’t explicitly have. The debt I’m gonna have for a accelerated BSN is more than the debt I would have had if I attended a more expensive school with a nursing program.

    Social life - this aspect might not be satisfying especially if you are going to a college that has a huge student population or if you do not know a single soul who is going to attend the college you are attending. But don’t worry, it is going to be frustrating only during your freshman year in college. You will eventually end up making some good friends by the time you are a sophomore.

    When I toured Yale I didn’t really find it as cool as Columbia or MIT, but maybe it was just the day I toured on. Hopefully Yale is more epic than the impression I got from it was. Im also worried about Yale’s engineering and math departments, cause they aren’t like MIT or Columbia’s. I only got into Yale though, so hopefully it is really fun because the people look nice. A ton of kids in my class are gap yearin it. I just want to leave my family lol. Yale 2024 is gonna be a bit smaller.
    Also my sister found University of Virginia to be socially distant, she said it was full of rich snobby kids.

      Ahhhhh I was debating between Duke and Yale for 2024 and I chose Duke (bc it was my original dream school), but I promise you Yale is a fantastic choice!! The reason why they were the only Ivy that could even catch my attention away from Duke are all the support systems they have in place for students and the excellent class that’s going in. It’s not as cut throat as the other Ivies and people there genuinely want to collaborate and work with you. I had a similar experience with not feeling that click with Duke when I briefly visited (in its defense, it was during a severe thunderstorm) but I still made the choice because sis... if you’re Yale material, you would be wildly successful even if you went to school in a closet. Yale is just the icing on the cake :)

    My child was accepted at Cornell, Carnegie Mellon in Comp Sci and Univ of Chicago among others. His really wanted to go to the first two but they wanted $60k from me. He got a full scholarship from U of C. I was prepared to pay at a lot for college just not that much. In the end we just couldn’t justify the cost this although the CS programs are much better at the others. As a parent I wanted choices for my child but in the end I felt he really did not have one. My child is ok with the decision because he does like U of C and he is a good fit but I’m afraid he (and I) might regret it. Just wondering if we did the right thing. In my heart I think so because if wrong the only loss is room and board ( bright side 🙂)

    Great video! I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for what we can do if we didn't have the opportunity to visit schools and now can't due to COVID 19. I'm a transfer applicant and I was initially planning on using the month of May to visit campuses that I got into in order to make a decision by June 1st, which is the SIR deadline for transfers. It's hard to judge the vibe of a school without having visited it. I'm trying to gauge the campus culture based on things I have read online but I feel like it isn't the same as actually going to campus and seeing what it is like. Any tips as to what to look for when researching from home?

      This depends on a few factors. Arizona and Indiana are incredibly different places, culture-wise and climate-wise. Tempe, Arizona is very very hot and a bit dry. Tempe is also a smaller city. at around 180k people. Indianapolis is very cold in the winter, and pretty hot and humid in the summer. Indianapolis is also a much bigger city at around 875k people. The campuses are also probably pretty different. You gotta ask yourself, which would I feel more at home in? As for costs: do you anticipate having a high paying job after college? If so, you can be more lenient on money. If not, I'd honestly go for whichever is cheaper for you. As for your major, I can't really speak for how good the comourer engineering programs at either of these places are

    • @samanthayoung4632
      @samanthayoung4632 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you can do volunteer service, start a club/nonprofit, do extracurriculars at another school, an after-school job, compete in regional/state/national fairs and competitions, etc. Due to COVID-19, a lot of programs (Summer Stem Institute, Girls Who Code, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes) have moved online. I had a similar experience to yours; I competed in science olympiad and did other extracurriculars at another school. Colleges look at you and your school's profile, so even if your school only has 3 ap classes and has 500 students, they'll see that.
      Your essays are also an important part of college admissions. Essays give you a chance to show your voice outside of your extracurriculars and GPA, so optimize this chance to be authentic and show that you are passionate, driven, and intelligent (with a little bit of personality).
      I recommend taking challenging courses also, such as honors, AP, and dual enrollment. Hope this helps!

    Would you recommend a freshman doing a brief intro sat/psat book review over the summer to their sophomore year, and then going the school year without doing anything related to these tests, and then doing a max out study session over the summer of sophomore and junior year, or would you just wait until the summer in between sophomore and junior year?

    • @parkerjstewart7088
      @parkerjstewart7088 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s really whatever you want to do. If you study wisely, you don’t need near that much time. What worked well for me in terms of actual sat/act was taking it over the summer. Over the summer, you can take a week or two and do nothing but study. I took my first act in June going into my junior year. I was happy but not satisfied. I was able to refine my skills a bit more during the school year and get a 36 in February. If you’re just going into your sophomore year, relax. You have so much time. Enjoy your summer; do what you want to do. Come junior year, you’re time for those activities will be decreases greatly, so enjoy as much of it as possible.

    Since we were kids, it's been drilled into our heads that without going to college, one won't be successful. College has changed dramatically from when the parents went or chose not to attend college. 90% of all college degrees are a waste of money and time in today's world. There ARE high paying jobs that don't require a degree and if you're willing to put in the effort. With the way the college system is set up, you're being scammed. Start your own business if that's what you want. College campuses these days are indoctrination centers. Well, public education in general. The point is to do what YOU believe are right for you.

    If your major isn't specialized, you might as well just go to a cheap state school. Even if your major is specialized, a cheap state school is probably good as long as your GPA is high enough to impress employers.

    Why don’t kids regret the school district the attended? As in the education they have chosen throughout K-12 schooling?🎃

    Give me a break with the notion of regretting
    going to a state or lower ranked school because of feeling bored or unchallenged. That's just an excuse for being boring or not challenging yourself. Or simply finding an excuse for being unhappy. The idea that all highly ranked schools are de facto more challenging than all others is a myth perpetuated by people who attended those schools to promote their own feelings of superiority. A kid attending, say College of Wooster, is no less challenged than kids at any number of what are considered top schools.
