Best concert ever. Also this was the first time a US band played on Russian soil after the collapse of the Soviet Union. What truer way to sense liberation than listen to Metallica and Pantera!
The Soviet Union collapsed in December 26, 1991 Metallica played there September of 1991, in the final days of the Soviet Union. The American rock band Metallica gave a concert in a country that would soon cease to exist. The show was part of the 'Monsters of Rock' festival, which also brought together groups such as AC/DC and Pantera.
Playing to 1,6 million idiots who knows F.all what they`r listening to and what Metallica is singing about so, that will not change for the next 30 years. a Country filled with victims that follow a little dick war pig....The world is going to hate you Russia for many years to come..Putin is the new Hitler and you let it happen...🤮
Another thing that’s really amazing is that there are quite a few soldiers… there as crowd control… that have stripped off their uniforms and are rocking out with the crowd. Absolutely ASTONISHING show. Everything about it is breathtaking. It’s crazy how Hetfield (singer) is just standing up there like he owns the whole world. Not one outward sign of nervousness, not one quiver in his voice, nothin. Super calm and confident. And he’s only 28 years old at the time. Insane. Absolutely insane. I can only imagine what it must’ve been like for those people to see American rockstars in the flesh for the first time. They sure as hell earned it. Wow. I’ve been listening to Metallica since the early 80’s… since back when they were still considered a “local band”… lmao… and I get chills every time I see this video. Truly awe inspiring.
maybe you can an answer a question for me. Did many of the fans speak English? Did they understand the words at all, or just responded to the music and beat?
The choppers were for security purposes, but also to help circulate air so the people in the center core of the venue didnt pass out. Legend has it that Moscow registered a .03 on the Richter Scale during this concert. Probably a mix of music and 1 million headbangers jumping around. Basically us humans created an earthquake (or at least a tremor).
AS .03 on the Richter scale is quite faint, I suggest updating the legend to claim a 2 at least. DOn't undersell the boys! Of course it would also matter from where measured.
@@jpotter2086I think it quite common actually. Springsteen broke a stadium in Gothenburg and John Fogerty of all people made the foundation of some high rises crack when he played my home town

I've seen people in wheel chairs and people permanently on cruches in the pit at numerous shows. Metal heads are often misunderstood. Lots of respect and love. You wouldn't think so but its true
I've seen and been in quite a few pits where people would go down and the pit would stop to help them up. Once it there was this girl that went down and this huge dude just stopped put his arms out to hold others back so she could get up .
Bud…I am so pumped you took my suggestion and watched this concert. It was truly a remarkable show. Watching you discover the band and feeling the things I felt when I first discovered them is awesome. So glad you’re going to check out the rest of their catalog. The late 80’s and early 90’s saw a big change in politics in Eastern Europe at the time. Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in Dec 1991, communism is those countries was coming to an end. To have a festival like this was such a release for people. I don’t care what drug you take…there is NO HIGH like walking on to a stage in front of one million people and playing your ass off. I can't help when people check this out for the first time, wishing they'd have selected Creeping Death from this show but my saving grace is the hope that they do and see an even more epic performance
I think it's awesome that you're getting to know Metallica songs. I started rocking to them when I was in the beginning of middle school. And I'm almost 51 now.
I'm from Bellflower/Downey California border. These guys played my keg parties in the back yard when they were first starting. Everyone knew they were gonna be famous one day. They were so young back then, but powerful players.
Another funny Metallica story. I got heavily into them in the mid 90s in college. The guy next to me was into Too Short, Ice Cube, etc. I loved rap as well. One night he was pumping Too Short bassy as hell at 2am; I couldn't sleep with paper thin dorm brick walls. So I cranked Metallica treble all the way up. Then we hung out in the hallway until we woke up half the dorm to complain. LOL.
The largest gathering of people for a concert or speech is the Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage festival held every 12 years in India. The 2019 Kumbh Mela drew an estimated 120 million people. The previous record-holder was the 2013 Kumbh Mela, which attracted 30 million people. Other notable large gatherings include: * The 1995 World Youth Day in Manila, Philippines, which drew 5 million people. * The 2015 Papal Mass in Manila, Philippines, which drew 6 million people. * The 2016 Arba'een Pilgrimage in Karbala, Iraq, which drew 25 million people.
Yes this was at the end of the Soviet Union few years earlier some rock bands played behind the iron Curtain in Poland & this was in Moscow at the end of the Soviet Union so you have to remember they were cut off from this Western Rock which is the ethnicity of freedom
Yes, that is so true 1.6 million people attended if you will watch this same concert but the song Harvester of sorrow by Metallica live in Moscow you will see them actually beating up the concert goers
I watched them on this tour. Not this concert, but when Monsters of Rock came through Belgium. This was when the Soviet Union was about to collapse and this was one of the first times western bands were allowed to perform over the iron curtain. These people had only heard western music over pirated radio, so they let loose quite dramatically when they could actually see this show. I think like 30 people died at this event. You should watch their video of "Creeping Death" at this concert. That's pretty epic as well.
The military guys shown in the crowd partying were not part of the security troops, in fact, the one wearing his jacket with the black patches was actually from the Armored Troops. The majority of the troops actually working security at this event were from the MVD 'Министерство внутренних дел', (like the guy with the cap with the maroon cap band) along with a smattering of Militia and KGB troops. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union (MVD) was the interior ministry of Russia, responsible for law enforcement and internal security. It oversees several key agencies, including the Police of Russia, Migration Affairs, Drugs Control, Traffic Safety, the Centre for Combating Extremism, and the Investigative Department. Someone asked in one of these reviews what kind of drug these people were on, and I told him..."Freedom". This type of excitement was everywhere during this period, I remember one train trip form Budapest to Prague....sitting in second class with a compartment full of Czech soldiers drinking wine and jamming to a Scorpions tape in a boom box.
“Who knew a nightmare could be so beautiful”… well said my man. I took my daughter to Rome last summer and we took the bullet train to Florence on Sunday- as a surprise to her we saw Metallica that night… best Father’s Day ever. Now we have tickets to see them in St. Louis in November - 😎
Doesn't matter what type of music you grew up with. I've never seen a person listen to Metallica that doesn't totally get the epic mastery by these guys. Love that you appreciated that sick solo.
Ya when they opened up the Iron Curtain under Gorbachev people saw for the first time these forbidden bands of the west. They brought crazy crowd there. Likely never to be repeated at this level.
I actually only like a handful of Metallica songs & this is one & literally my favorite video of them! Talk about being them facing 1.6 MILLION FANS!! I’d be sea sick! Lol How excited they must have been seeing something so AMAZING!
This concert took place at an air field in Moscow in September 1991. Unofficial reports estimate the audience to be 1.6 million people. "Enter Sandman" was written about crib death, the sudden and unexpected death of young children, as well as childhood night terrors.
Your reactions to Metallica are classic! You are pure entertainment. Metallica being my #1 band, and on to you being my #1 reactor! Great Job! Love from Maryland USA
Theres a reactor that was talking about himself growing up. Went to school and saw the concert tees but didn't know the groups. At home grandmom had her favorite music, mom had her favorite music. Now a music reactor he said I would have worn those zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallic tee-shirts lol
Well, I believe we’ve discovered your music genre now!! Metal, it is then!!!🙌✨👌🫶👏 Or at least Metallica and the energy from the massive crowd! This is the most live video reaction I’ve seen you do! I didn’t know you had that much excitement and you. Lol! It was great energy watching how much you truly enjoyed it.
the helicopter were used for surveillance yes - but they also were used to help circulate the air. The massive group of people created so much body heat that it created it's own microcosm of humid climate - a layer of moisture over the open-air venue. The song explores the fact that most of our stories/fairy tales we are taught in our youth have an underlying darkness to them. Children are taught a creepy boogeyman called The Sand Man enters their room at night and throws sand in their eyes to help them sleep - this to explain dreams and why there's eye-crust in the morning. "London Bridges falling down". How about 'pocket full of posies, ashes ashes we all fall down'. This happy little nursery rhyme we learn as children is about the Black Plague. So this song is exploring the darkness found in our children's stories to makes us feel better.
I got to see them live in Vancouver Canada. When they started, the arena was pitch black and quiet. “Blackened” started and the arena of 18000+ jumped to their feet. I’m a small town kid so was INSAnE to see lol
Metallica set a worlds record for a audience. They send a message with each song ,more than just the music, I went there with my friend's,we had a blast but thousands were almost crushed by the crowds. One of the best times in my life because yes we didn't fully understand each other and the Russian people were cautious but when they seen us screaming, singing with them, plus trying to share our experiences with going to see Metallica,we were as One and they welcomed us .

One of my favorite bands worth seeing them in concert
Love it... THE biggest concert I've ever known of...
I can't help when people check this out for the first time, wishing they'd have selected Creeping Death from this show but my saving grace is the hope that they do and see an even more epic performance
Creeping Death is another band or song?
@@TooBlunt Another Metallica song from their set that ROCKS!!! 🤘
Got it got it. I think I’m going to do the whole show. All the bands and all the songs (separate videos though lol)
@@TooBlunt Yes, Creeping Death from this same performance. It's really epic.
@@TooBlunt sorry but I just now got a notification that you replied. Creeping Death is another metallica song performed at this concert
I think it's awesome that you're getting to know Metallica songs. I started rocking to them when I was in the beginning of middle school. And I'm almost 51 now.
This was definitely before CoVID. I came home very sore back in the 80s and 90s after some shows, but never went to anything this huge.
And ears ringing for days.... almost to the point you thought it may be this way forever lol
That's like all of Europe is in attendance. But everyone can agree that Metallica is Mandatory! Ty for the reaction *
I'm from Bellflower/Downey California border. These guys played my keg parties in the back yard when they were first starting. Everyone knew they were gonna be famous one day. They were so young back then, but powerful players.
Been jamming to Metallica from the git go...love to see the enthusiasm of new fans. But live is a whole different animal
The Wall came down , the Iron Curtain fell . These are important and this is a small sample of the joy and happiness that followed the falls .
Pantera was at that concert. They did a killer performance of their song "Domination". Check it out.
Yess Pantera !
LOL.
The Kings. I have tickets to see the for my 15th and 16th Metallica concert I can’t wait for August 2023! 🤘
Other notable large gatherings include:
* The 1995 World Youth Day in Manila, Philippines, which drew 5 million people.
* The 2015 Papal Mass in Manila, Philippines, which drew 6 million people.
* The 2016 Arba'een Pilgrimage in Karbala, Iraq, which drew 25 million people.
This band absolutely rules live!!!!
Yes this was at the end of the Soviet Union few years earlier some rock bands played behind the iron Curtain in Poland & this was in Moscow at the end of the Soviet Union so you have to remember they were cut off from this Western Rock which is the ethnicity of freedom
Definitely the best song to introduce you to metallica
Welcome young man to the best band ever. Can’t even imagine how many babies were made and lost
Yes, that is so true 1.6 million people attended if you will watch this same concert but the song Harvester of sorrow by Metallica live in Moscow you will see them actually beating up the concert goers
I love watching you react to songs I grew up with that got us all kinds of pumped up!
It was free also with no fencing, so stand as close as you could get. Shows how heavy metal brings people together without causing fighting.
This was my first Metallica song when I was a teenager, shit gave me chills!!!
Disposable heroes by Metallica. Instant playlist!!!
Helicopter was dropping water and cooling the crowd off
Makes a lot of sense
Over one million people at that show biggest concert ever 💯
Lynyrd Skynyrd 'Freebird' Oakland Coliseum Stadium (1977 Concert) and ac/dc thunderstruck live at river plate two great videos
So love watching you Headbang! Great reaction. 🤘🏻😊
Specifically speaking, the Time-Signature' merely sets the Tempo, such as 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 etc.. The 'stop' thing you mention is known as a 'rest.'
You should watch them do this song from their Mexico concert!
every time I watch this I get goosebumps! It is an amazing song, performance, and the mass of people sometimes looks like a wave !
It looks awesome and terrifying. I would not want to be in that crowd
This is! the biggest turnout ever in the history of concerts! It will never be beaten!
I have seen metallic a 23 times absolutely the best metal band ever
He wrote this song to his son, who was afraid to sleep in the dark.
Lars Ulrich representing Denmark with Dannebrog is just classic!
Great reaction to Metallica. I would also suggest 'one,' which is another masterpiece from them, and 'creeping death' from the same concert in Moscow.
When they say "Rock Star" that is what they mean ...
If you weren't a headbanger before this ... you are afterwards
Their official video is awesome too.
Love Metallica! ♥️ Grew up on this music! Awesome reaction! Thanks ❤️ Much Love! #Hangovergang
I got to see them twice live - amazing! Not that kind of crowd though but just as incredible
I love when the reacter gets into & enjoys the music, rather than sitting all serious & being too analytical
THIS IS THE ERA OF GENERATION XRS WE ROCKED LIKE 👍🏻 SHITT , WISH YOU ALL COULD HAVE BEEN THERE 😉 😊
We are lucky to still be alive! We partied hard. I used to mosh and headbang until I couldn’t hold my head up anymore.
Those are ROCK GODS. Worldwide rock gods.
The song is about the fears put into kids heads to make them go to sleep, it was originally about crib death but was changed
the helicopter were used for surveillance yes - but they also were used to help circulate the air.
They used the rotor wash from the helos to cool the crowd down. 🤣 I ain't kidding. 1.6 million rockers in one place.
It would've been my luck to have been in the middle of that crowd..and have to use the bathroom.
Welcome to metal my friend.
The time signature...ghost notes. String skipping appregios, leave you expecting the next note that isn't there but your mind hears it. 👍
I always think of soldiers with PTSD when I hear this song. Metallica is the ish!
