I tune in from time to time. Really impressed with your skills! Do you have any favorite books on the subject of permaculture for rank amateurs of a certain age that wouldn't seem overwhelming? I'd like to have some food growing on my mostly shady lot, but I'm no green thumb. I don't know the first thing about testing soil either. Bought some thingamajig at Home Depot and couldn't figure out how to use it! Like I said, I'm a rank amateur of limited physical abilities, but I'm still game for making a go at a food garden. I'd appreciate any advice you have!
@r.a.w.r.news.t.v.2 I wonder, when getting sun and temps like that, would it be possible to erect semi transparent shade for your herbs? Even something like cheesecloth tied to some poles over the plants on those days?
I used to hear the old folks saying that anytime you made a new planting area, especially in turf, that for the first crop, you should plant potatoes to "clean the soil". was never quite sure what they meant by it, but this makes it clearer now, as to what might be going on on underground. Much thanks to you and your 'supervisor'!
Lettuce is a good one too! Pulls out heavy metals and the like, if I remember right. There was a study done a few years back now - was quite effective!
My husband just asked if I pulled up my garden?bahahahahaaaa!!! I SAID NO!! My squash and pumpkin are multiplying! My peppers too! My tomatoes are blushing!!!! Oh and my okra... is still happening! Lol #Illinois
Hello! On days when life and the garden and work get overwhelming, just hearing you say, “let’s go!” gets me back on track. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and contagious joy!
Great answer to a very tough problem. I really was distressed that those pests would spread to the rest of your garden. I'm so glad they didn't. The squash plants look great! And wow, all those yummy potatoes!!!
flame weeder only burns the surface. I did something worse, which goes deeper, I am not proud of it…. I poured boiling hot water on my soil. 2qm only but still….because I knew these crawlers go deep. Did it work? No. I have those in my whole garden. I gave up… it is what it is
I had a raised bed affected by that same problem. Your earlier video, you mentioned potatoes so I moved volunteer potatoes in the bed and it worked great, my brussel sprouts took off after the potatoes went in.
Hi James, this is awesome - can you please post more videos about companion planting, comparing the benefits of various combinations, and combos that won't work well? You mention here that the potatoes will improve the soil this year and they will leave it enhanced for the coming season as well. Can you please include this kind of foresight in content related to companion planting? Thanks so much - spam for Tuck❤❤❤❤!
Many plants have beneficial companion plants. This is a great example of that. I always plant marigolds with my tomatoes to stop nematode worms on the tomato roots. Btw, what variety were those potatoes?
@@miseentrope Awesome, I got the Nicloa and Desiree right but have never come across Elba. I wonder if that's called something different in Australia? Many thanks for the reply!
You are a spud stud!!! 😄 ❤❤❤ for Tuck - he was on it, and standing by to jump into action! Uplifting and inspiring as usual, James. Have to admit that I get a bit jealous of your carrots. I've never had luck with them. Tried growing them in a pot this year - still pathetic little nothings. Sigh.
@bg7491 I watched rusted roots video & have had success every year, plus making sure to plant a few pkg's to get the most. The trick she showed is use 2x4's lay them down with maybe an 1" space plant seeds in that space repeat throughout the area your planting carrots. Then water them in with a mister then cover all the row of seeds with the 2x4's after a few days check to see if the seeds have germinated, once you see they have begun the germination process removed the 2x4's. Water regularly, enjoy @ harvest time, this was a game changer for me. Good luck🎉
@@pamschonfarber1041 Hmmmm, I'll see if I can find the video. It would be nice to be able to grow one of Tuck's (and my) favorite snacks! I saw that James did the board covering, so maybe this magic will work! LOL! Thank you for your suggestion! 👍🏻😊

So appreciate you and Tuck.💞💞💞 Such great teaching! Hey, can you tell me... on the white buckets that you use to grow your tomatoes and peppers, do you drill holes in bottom of the buckets? Or, do you fill some of the bottom with rock? Just wondering how you handle the drainage. Thanks much!!

You should get a flame weeder and flame the bed thoroughly during winter. Plant more potatoes and garlic next year.
What's a flame weeder? I've not heard of that before. 👍
A flame weeder will also kill of the microbiology in the soils, much better to plant a cover crops.
flame weeder only burns the surface. I did something worse, which goes deeper, I am not proud of it…. I poured boiling hot water on my soil. 2qm only but still….because I knew these crawlers go deep. Did it work? No. I have those in my whole garden. I gave up… it is what it is
There is a man on TH-cam that flame weeds his garden . I think his name is black gumbo . Great option
@@ninemoonplanet it just burns the top. You just go along the top and kill the weeds . Doesn’t hurt a bit
