Try flying without up the tree and you will see why they are needed. The BF109 frame was outdated come 1943 and gunpods are an ad hoc way to extend the life.

I like playing in K4 without them, but yeah, compared to other planes at that BR, bf109 is outgunned a lot

I mount gunpods on 109 G-2 and K-4. I don't on F-4, G-6, G-14, K-10.
