Thanks for doing this monster of a “How to Play”. I don’t think my friend and I would have been able to play it correctly without this. The rulebook isn’t a mess but it’s got some glaring faults. Paul for 2020.
12:57 If I'm not mistaken, the third column interests not only a 2-3-player game, but also a 4-player game when you want to import an another player resource that is not on the section of the city you need. But you can do this only after a 2nd wooden house (completion token) is placed on a Prestige Building. :)
That's a huge rule. The first time we played, one player refused to ever place one of his initial resources. We didn't remember that rule, so we played through the rest of the game hampered in that way. Took much longer than the game should've and we ended up not really liking it then.
This was an exquisitely constructed how-to-play! I absolutely love how to shifted from the simple to complex rules - and from the common to the exotic - so seamlessly; not letting yourself be bound to the sequence of play if it would confuse your audience. Brilliant!
Honestly, I wish the "trickle down" scoring had been described as "you get points, plus anything you depend on gets its points". This is far more intuitive than the "you earn 4, and then pay out 2". You can sort of follow this by just using the "+2" indicator instead. The only time it gets a bit confusing is with neutral resources, since they use up 1 extra point.
Wow. This is a very very good video. You explain it in such a clear way and the video sequences are so helpful to understand how everything works. Thx for this!
Wonderful explanation! After reading the rulebook and watching other video explanations I was still left slightly overwhelmed, but you managed to teach this expertly! Liked, subscribed, shared, printed out the thumbnail and framed it above the Kallax, cheers!
Thank you for another great rules video! I am waiting for my copy to arrive, and hopefully it will be here before the weekend, as we have two game nights planned. Now, I don't have to read the rules, and that is awesome! Great overview, and it really made me look forward to play the game! Keep it up :D
Amazing work Paul. Beautiful production values. Excellent explanation. I subscribed immediately after watching one of your other videos. Thanks for the hard work.
Thanks Ryan. Hope some of my other videos are useful too, though I really feel this is my best work yet for a number of reasons, both content and delivery.
Excellent video Paul, I'm now really looking forward to receiving my kickstarter copy. I also like the new set with the little nods to the game in the background. That's a really nice touch.
The miniature Minas Tirith is because it is a city-building game, the hexes are from Forge War, and of course the secret box of hidden stuff. I'm trying to put a few little "easter eggs" in my videos where I can.
Fantastic job as usual- I watched it and laid out the cards and buildings, ready to do my version of your teach when I play with my wife later. (She doesn’t like watching videos to learn)
When this arrives it will be the most challenging game in my collection and this video has been really helpful to me, will definitely be watching this again when the game arrives.
Had to see if someone had done a video of this game and was lucky to find your video! God job and thanks for some very good explanations! You didn't explain the income card though ...
Example shown during 24:44 is illegal right? because the yellow player doesnt have any build he owns connected to the building he wants to put. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
Isn’t the tier 3 cloth upgrade that yellow put down an illegal move? The rules state, “When placing the tile, it must be connected to prerequisite resource building tiles that player owns or has access to, connected to something the player owns, and cannot be adjacent to any other tile the player owns, excluding bridges/gates.” It’s not connected to anything yellow owns which is one of the 4 requirements that you went over and laid out in that rule. Thanks for the thorough video!
If you mean the bit at 25:00 then you are absolutely right. well spotted. My bad on this. There should be a road leading off to the right and a connection to a yellow-owned building.
So, with the prestige building at the end that connects to a neutral player; why would two be lost to the neutral player? 4 points gained with one being lost to the neutral from the pay out would leave three to blue, wouldn't it?
hi Paul, loved the video.. watched it 3 or 4 times.. then played a game (still got 2 rules wrong..lol) revisited the video and rules.. but noticed that 25 min in to vid is the yellow a mistake? there seems to be NO connected roads letting yellow have that tier 3 resouce? thanks Jeff
Some questions, 1. What if tier 3 advance building connect to more than 1 tier 2 building from different owner, does the rule apply is same as the prestige building being delivered a resource from different owner, so the one who make the connections decide which building get points? 2. How do you know the cost of get access from a resource (2/3/4 gold) without pulling up the token from the board to see what terrain underneath them? Because most of the time when we play this game, its quite annoying to do that so often, sometimes accidently mess the lay out, move the tile around, etc because we need to calculate the cost so often, any idea to solve this problem?
Hi, great instruction :) but I have a question when I buy access to a good on one tile in one distribution, do I always have access to this resource, no matter where the next one is set, or do I have to buy access to another tile of the same good?
Amazed that Founders of Gloomhaven is Paul's 7th most played video on his channel. Nothing wrong with the game or Pauls video but Just surprised it's 7th. Maybe it's because it has Gloomhaven in the title✌
So, if you don't have Gloomhaven, will you never be able to utilize the secret black box space? Excellent video as always btw, hope to see you again at BGGC in November:)
Very well made video for what looks like a very complex game. One rule i can't work out, what do you have to pay if you wish to get access to another players teir 2 resource?
It is the same rules - you pay the cost based on the terrain type where the resource building is. And if a building is over more than one type of terrain, you pay the lower cost.
Trying to understand Trickle Down Point Scoring from minute 33:49. If I get this correctly, we start with 7 points. Lets assume Green placed it and triggered. Green doesn't get all the 7 points because he has to call upon other owners of resource production first before scoring. So Weapons, it has to pay out 4 to cloth and 1 to metal. Of the 4 to cloth, Orange has to pay out as well so Green gets 1 of those 4 points paid to cloth. So 4-1 is 3. Orange gets 3 since he didn't contribute to anything else. Green gets 1 for metal, 1 for 1 for wood, and 2 for the leftover that started at metal? Phew. I think I got it.
Yep. There are a few ways of doing this to help you when learning. What I did was to provide some "VP counters". I would give 7 of them to green. But then, I would make him pay the other players for the resources he needs, who would then have to play some of those points to other players (possibly even back to green). When all this was done, everyone would trade in those VP counters for actual VP around the outside of the board, and then the game would move on. This was really helpful to learn how it works, but after you've done it a few times, the counters were no longer needed as people got the hang of it.
@@GamingRulesVideos Balls! Played my first game the other day solo and thought I'd made a big error so packed it all up on the last round before scoring. Turns out I was wrong!
New since the game was first being shown yes, but this started out last year. I remember suggesting that there be suggested starting locations for new players to help get them started, and then it became the actual full rules. Weird stuff can happen otherwise I guess.
Hi Paul. You're videos are so clear and I'm not talking about resolution. Do you have any tips, for us poloygamers, on how to read lots and lots of rule books, how to get through them all and to keep the information?
Learning games is hard, and we all make mistakes and miss something. As for how to remember rules for so many different games, that is one of those things that some people are good at and others not so much. I'm lucky in that I am generally pretty good at it, but that is ok, because I am so terrible at so many other things :) I'm not sure I have any actual tips on remembering things, but generally I think that reading a rulebook again AFTER playing the game is essential - to find anything you may have read, but then forgotten when you played. Same with my videos. Watch the video, then play the game, then rewatch, or read the rulebook. Get the information in all 3 different was of learning (reading, watching, doing), and then you stand the best chance of getting the rules right :)
Thanks you. If you have a video for it I normally watch your video, then read the rules, and then play the game. But I think your tip is even better: watch the video, play the game, and then read the rules or watch the video again. Great tip :)
So if I play an adviser (discard) and in my next turn play call to vote fires the adviser come back too my hand as well? Or are advisers one time only?
This is a really difficult game to understand from the rulebook alone (which I think is nearly unclear), but this video does seem to help while having multiple go's at the game and returning here for further clarification. Not an easy game to learn at all
Oh, bummer. Well, I'll upload to BGG anyway, probably this week. It's a new way to represent the resource tree (38:00), which I find quite hard to follow as it is now. If your'e subscribed to the game on BGG you'll see that.
During level three building explantion: Say yellow built this here... Me: Why would you EVER do that?! End of level 3 building explanation: ...so that probably wasn't a very good idea... Me: ...my...heart...😵😵😵
I know I use i a lot in this video, but I think it is important to mention it. Otherwise people hear something and think "what is that? Have I missed them mentioning it?"
saying it once in the beginning, maybe as a general advice is sufficient, nervous people mostly do not tend to listen through the whole clip patiently, but eager (most of all experienced) listeners get annoyed by having the narration interrupted constantly - but overall an excellent explaination
Sure, I can try that for the next one. Just to say "During this video, I will be mentioning lots of things which wont be clear, but I will refer to them later on, so dont worry". Will consult others and see what they think. Thanks so much for the feedback.
Thanks for doing this monster of a “How to Play”. I don’t think my friend and I would have been able to play it correctly without this. The rulebook isn’t a mess but it’s got some glaring faults. Paul for 2020.

Holy Cow Paul. The rules are clear as always but the production values are through the roof. Well done! Thanks a bunch!
"What can I say, people like living near trees." Very clear, well crafted, and helpful video.

Excellent video! I looked at several how-to-play videos for this game and this is certainly the best one.

You are correct Marcin. Sorry for this slip-up, and well spotted! :) Yellow is a big cheater.
Gaming Rules! Yellow would have needed a road? Yellow didn’t get any points. The other players may want to be quiet about the cheating.
Can't wait for game. Games are made better with Gaming Rules! Videos. Fact
Isn’t the tier 3 cloth upgrade that yellow put down an illegal move?
The rules state, “When placing the tile, it must be connected to prerequisite resource building tiles that player owns or has access to, connected to something the player owns, and cannot be adjacent to any other tile the player owns, excluding bridges/gates.”
It’s not connected to anything yellow owns which is one of the 4 requirements that you went over and laid out in that rule.

Hi Jeff, yes. The yellow player is indeed a big cheaty McCheaty here. Pretend there are some roads going off to the right connecting to his evil lair.

Quick clarification; remind me how you can buy into advanced resource buildings.
Are you allowed to rotate buildings when you place them on the map?
absolutely, anything can go in whatever orientation you want.
So regardless, the neutral tokens always take 2 points?
when they are given points in that way, yes. A bit fiddly, but needed for game balance.
