I’ve had the game a week and been fretting about ensuring all rules known before I start. Watched a number of online tutorials. THIS is the only one that made the attack modifier deck set up and use clear so thank you. Easily the best overview I’ve seen.
The game is arriving at my door tomorrow and I'm so glad I've found these videos. Watched multiple of tuts before but this is by far the clearest one so far!
I just bought this game for my son and I to play today. We watched the recommended videos and read the rulebook and then tried to play a game. We had alot of fun, but also alot of questions. It took us 4 hours to play the first senario. (Although we did play it twice because we lost the first time.) Thanks so much for making this video!

Usually don't comment but content like this needs to be boosted! I was a little bummed at the spoiler (felt you could have put in a black bar or something) but it definitely is more useful to have that information than to not have it - so I understand why you had to put it in there. On to the next three videos and dropping a like/comment!
Thanks so much neotwist! Yeah that spoiler was an unfortunate oversight on my part. There were a number of way I could have worked around it. I've definitely taken steps in the rest of the Gloomhaven videos as well as future series (such as Tainted Grail) to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Thank you for the explanation. We started playing last night and there are just a LOT of moving pieces and the game is not that great at walking you through the setup. We played Scenario 1 with enemies equal to the icons on the page because we had no idea about the player count indicators OR things like the money tiles. Or how the mod deck worked. This was much easier to follow.
Happy this was a help, Viridian! I absolutely love this game. There are definitely a lot of moving pieces but stick with it and it'll all become mostly intuitive and worth it!
So the scenario setup to me appears that the loot tokens on the map is a 5 loot with a 1 loot on top of it. Is there anything that explicitly explains this? If it is only a 1 value token, why have the golden color around it which looks like the 5 token?
I agree it’s a little strange they are circled with a gold ring. However, this has been clarified in forums and by the designer that you do in fact only put a “1” token on those spots. Considering how much gold you would be taking in if there were 6 tokens on each spot it just wouldn’t make sense for there to be that many tokens there. For instance, if you were playing the scenario on Level 5 every stack of 6 coins would be worth 24 gold. There would be virtually no scarcity of money in that case.
Very detailed! Some folks who learn from voice over reading might really appreciate such attention to detail on several important rules ... some that I see folks who stream like me screw up! Actually it's funny when Isaac during one of the Frosthaven puzzles has to look up a rule. Reminds us that we can always take the opportunity to look at the rulebook. Very good How-to-play.

Great guide man, but yeesh.. Of all the forums and videos I’ve watched on Gloomhaven, you’re the only one to reveal any character besides the six starting classes.
So when playing ability cards can you choose to do the bottom on the first card first, then the top of the second? or is it always top of one bottom of second in that order?
Does a attack modifier contains 20 cards at every time. I know you can add blessing or curse to the attack modifier deck or -1 if it's on the item card. But does this increase or decrease the the maximum number of attack modifier cards for example 1 blessing and 1 -1 card=22 cards or 20 cards Is the number always 20 cards and you need to take out others or does it increase or decrease depending on the situation/szenario
Good question. The attack modifier STARTS at 20 but as perks add or subtract cards that number will change. I actually keep a running total on my character sheet to help me remember how many cards that character should have in their deck. Thanks for watching, _Arkoner_22

Great video, it really helped me learn the basics. My wife and I just started playing Jaws of the Lion. Not to beat a dead horse; however, the spoiler really does suck. I understand it was an honest mistake. With a lot of new players getting into Gloomhaven, because of JOTL, perhaps it might be best to edit the video and give a warning at the start. A lot of people, including myself, don't read the description prior to viewing. I also feel that it is quite easy to explain that concept without showing an unlocked character. Simply mentioning that there will be a number for unlocked characters, instead of a dash, should get the point across. I tried this on my wife and she immediately understood the concept. Just a suggestion :) Those who feel the spoiler isn't a big deal need to realize that for many of us unlocking the hidden characters is one of the highlights of Gloomhaven. It might not bother you; however, it obviously bothers a lot of people. Otherwise, as stated earlier, the video is fantastic. I look forward to watching the rest later. I'm definitely the type of person that avoids all spoilers when a new Marvel movie comes out or when there's a Legacy game I really want to play so I completely understand the people who are upset by the inclusion of this spoiler. Unfortunately there's no easy way I'm aware of to deal with the spoiler in the video without completely taking it down first and I think that's just a bit too much considering the minor nature of the spoiler. Im still confused as to how the END OF ROUND works. It says when all players are out of cards but not all players are out of cards when other are. How do you determine end of round if a player always has 2 cards available to play?? If Hatchet has already LOST 3 cards and the Red Guard has only LOST 1 then Hatchet will be running out of cards and resting before Red Guard is out of cards. There is always a player with 2 cards ready. Im very confused and cannot proceed with my scenario's until I figure it out. Thanks!!!

If a card has a dotted line with 2 abilities on it, the second part sometimes shows a LOSE icon. If I were to do the first part (like move 3) could I then ignore the second part below the dotted line in order to avoid having to LOSE the card? Thank you again :-) Like for example: the bottom half of a card says MOVE 3 then below dotted line it says IMMOBILIZE then LOSE card. Could I ignore the IMMOBILIZE part?
If you use any portion of that action then you'd have to perform that immobilize ability as well since it contains a negative effect. Pg 18 of the rulebook under Character Turn states, "they must perform any part that will cause a negative effect (e.g., reduce hit points, lose cards, or cause a negative condition) on themselves or their allies."
So basically the whole action gets used not just part? The dotted line just helps distinguish the different parts of the actions? But they ALL must be performed?
You’re allowed to skip abilities within an action that are purely beneficial to the character or allies. But if you perform any part of an action then you MUST perform any portion that contains a negative effect for the character or allies.
Hi J! Pretty sure you've got it but just to be sure. 1 - Each player will use one of the attack modifier decks numbered 1, 2, 3, or 4 (the number is in the bottom corner of the card). As the character gains perks they'll be able to start adding cards from all the cool class specific modifier cards found in their tuck box. These modifier cards will have the class symbol in the bottom corner instead of a number. 2 - When you first start the game you can only use Level 1 and Level X ability cards. Make sure if you use the Level X cards you still only have a total number of cards equal to that class' maximum hand size. The max hand size is found in the top corner of the class board. It would have been a perfect video but that character spoiler without warning upset me too. I don't read the description of the video before viewing. The spoiler warning should be in the video. Even better, you could have covered up most of the spoiler and just showed the numbers at the bottom. It was a totally unnecessary spoiler.

First of all you spoil one of the UNLOCKABLE characters and also when explaining the null cards you use a character’s base modifier deck with a monster ability card. That can be very confusing for new players. I thought that you said you had this scripted out. I was going to use these videos to teach a new group of players but I don’t know if I should at this point.

Sorry you’re disappointed by the video and I can see your points. - Regarding the spoiler of the Two Mini character mat, anytime I make a series for a game that can be spoiled I work very hard to have as few spoilers as possible in the video. Occasionally for certain rules or concepts it might be necessary to include a minor spoiler. I felt being able to actually show what the players would be seeing with regards to the numbers on the bottom right corner was worth the minor spoiler of seeing the back of the character mat and the actual name of the Two Mini class. I’ve added a disclaimer to the top of the video description and in retrospect should have mentioned in my intro that the spoiler would be there. - As far as the Null card being from a player attack modifier deck instead of the monster attack modifier deck that was simply an oversight. All the scripting in the world can’t stop the occasional human error. Fortunately the explanation of the actual effect isn’t changed and so ultimately I think this is a fairly minor error. This is especially true since just prior to the Null card explanation I spend a bit of time stressing how important it is to use the correct attack modifier decks for the players and monsters. That being said I’ve added a clarification to the top of the description as well. Thanks for pointing these concerns out, Mark!
