  • Hey Fig Fam!
I filmed this during Mother's Day, so shoutout to all you mom's out there! This video touches on an important strategy when growing your fig trees at a young age and into maturity!
Pruning and shaping your fig tree can expedite the healthy growth habit of your fig trees and will set them up for success with lots of healthy growth and high yields of figs for you to enjoy!
Now that your fig tree is awake and growing in the warm temps it could be growing in a way that can constrict and crowd itself. Generally figs and fruit trees will figure out over time how to manage themselves but that can take years and offer lower quantities of fruit
You can guide its progress and expedite its maturity and fig production by thinning the growth that goes inward into the canopy and keep the healthy.
I go over a few examples of small and large trees - in the ground and in containers - so you can see how to clean up you fig tree for the growing season ahead!

    Phil

I would love to see you prune an adult tree. Mine is definitely more of a bush. I am in the DFW area of Texas and my tree has already put on quite a bit of fruit. I don’t know exactly what type of fig I have but it has green fruit.

Hey I'd be happy to show you I'll make a video about a mature tree soon. My large celeste tree is about 20yrs old (it's technically on my neighbors property). I put out a video this past winter on how to prune a fig tree and I went over how to prune a mature tree - Take a look and let me know what you think. Thank you!

Thank you! Appreciate it. And glad it was helpful- it’s one of those “one step back for two steps forward type of deal” you cutting branches off so it grows more is a simple funny way of saying it.

Love it. Do you ever see the buds coming back or you periodically rub them off as you see the buds appear?

My brother has one tall tree, gives lots of fruits but, they are not good, the fruit is spongy and don't ripe what could be the problem?

Oh interesting. Where are you located? The reason I ask is that it sounds like it may be a male caprifig. If it is not the case then your tree may not be sufficiently nourished or it needs a little bit of a boost to tip it into ripening mode. If you have a female fig (assuming it's not the male caprifig that makes inedible figs) You can add a bunch of bone meal right about this time of year. You can use about a cup for every inch in the diameter of the fig tree. This will add Phosphorous to the soil and feed the tree. Phosphorus is great for helping root system develop AND flower and fruit set on trees! Give it a go and let me know come August and September if you have any ripe figs. You can also send me a picture of the figs as well. Cheers.
