    Clean cut looking guy...refreshing! Appreciate your "layering" method. I just grafted some of my fig trees today. You have quite a backyard! NICE

      Thanks for the kind words! I really am trying to build my "piece of peace" on my property. Best of luck on your grafting.

    My favorite way of propagating plants, this method is better than rooting cuttings in my opinion. lol -old lady here 😂

    Hi Phil! Thanks for sharing. Is it too late to put 1-gallon fig trees in the ground? I'm in zone 8b, Georgia.

    • @Philsfigs
      @Philsfigs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the fig and how healthy it looks and how tall it is. I think in Georgia it’s totally fine to put in the ground. Just dig a whole twice as wide as the root ball and mix in compost with the existing soil. Then put the fig in matching the soil line of the pot with the ground. Then add a little bit of mulch on top and water it.

    The question i have is, i have a black genoa in a large pot. The soil in the pot has compacted a bit over time, meaning the plant has sunk down into the pot. Its a large terracotta pot, square, and a real pain to remove the tree to add more soil. Can i add soil on top without killing the plant if i bury some of it? I see people in the states burying fig trees over winter, but there is no need for that here in Australia because its always hot where i live. I shouldn't have used that pot in retrospect, but hindsight is 20/20 haha. Maybe i have to bite the bullet and do my best to extract it as is.

      @Philsfigs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Personally when the tree goes dormant, I would bite the bullet and pull it out. If it's dormant you can prune the root ball to help it out of the pot. You can also prune around a 1/3 of the root ball of the fig tree and put in new potting soil around it and do that every couple of years If you want to keep it in the same size pot.
      Fig trees have shallower root systems and like to have their roots closer to the surface and you don't want to cover up the trunk of your tree with too much soil or it will be susceptible to rot. You can extend the life of your fig tree in it's pot by regular fertilization but at some point you'll want to remove it, prune the root ball and repot it. I hope that helps!

    Great video, Phil! I actually did this with one of my fig trees a few weeks ago to see what would happen. I'm also attempting to air layer it as well, which I've also never tried before.

    • @Philsfigs
      @Philsfigs  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks Peter! Let me know how it goes for you. It's basically the same as air-layering, but you take advantage of the soil line and being near the ground. For airlayering I will generally score the bark or remove the outer bark to the cambium layer to encourage root development.

    My friend has an old fig tree growing in back yard. How could I get a cutting to grow?

    • @Philsfigs
      @Philsfigs  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      oh nice lots of ways. You could easily try to take a low lying branch and layer it. You can also try to airlayer a branch as well as take cuttings and propagate them on their on as well!

    I still dont understand the concept of keep the soil away (or the way I've heard it from a 100 different people: keep the mulch away) from the main trunk. You literally just said if it comes in contact with the bark, it will just root more. And that's what I seem to see whenever my stuff touches the bottom of the branches.
    Speaking of layering, I need to stop watching your videos right now and go do like a 100 air layers while my fam is out of the house....

    • @Philsfigs
      @Philsfigs  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it can rot if too much of the main truck is buried. As a tree ages and its branches move on from having visible nodes and becoming strictly wood bark then they are more difficult to root. if you mound up around the truck its just putting it at more risk for rotting and pest to get in. You can certainly root more of the tree sometimes but its a balance of finding right branches and moisture.
