WOW, just when you think everyone else has given up on father and son shop time, I find this! Fantastic! When I was in the 5th grade, my dad brought home an old stove bolt 6 and we rebuilt it (old babbit bearing rods and oil dippers). That started me on a path I am still traveling (at 73 now). And, what a coincidence, I actually picked up a '59 Apache about 6 months ago and am trying to decide which direction I will go with it, rod or stock. Spend all the time you can with those boys, my two sons are grown and have kids. Although I started them out early with a couple '55 chevys when they were teenagers (which they still have) we work a lot on our heavy equipment now that we use on our property and I tinker on vintage motorcycles. Every minute you miss being with them is a minute you can't get back. Good luck with the Apache and keep the boys close. I subscribed and am anxious to follow your projects.

Love those Apache fleetsides..purchased one with 3k miles in 1962 when I was sixteen..kept two years and sold it to a friend's dad who later sold it to an old high school buddy..then to a fence company. Last known owner was a mean old man who had parked in his driveway for years..when my son was sixteen and taking auto shop I offered to buy it for me and my son to restore together..no deal
4 years ago it dissapeared with the same rotting tarp never to be seen again..😢

I've used the Marvel Mystery Oil in the past and it works, but I remove the spark plugs and use an Oiler to squirt the oil into each cylinder. It's good stuff it's like ATF high viscosity. With the spark plug wires removed you can jerk the motor with the starter to work the oil further down the cylinder to try and break it free. Good luck. Great father and "sons" project. AJ did a great job working those winch controls dad. lol

You picked a great first vehicle to start off your channel with. Love the teaching the kids as you go too.
Marvel Mystery Oil is an old farmers go to oil. The concoctions some people use is amazing, suprize some of them home brews don't kill them. Lots of chemicals in them. The old machine guys I learned from liked to use Marvel and some old school destroy transmission fluid. It will clean and dig thru the rust and carbon as well as leave an oil film behind. That was before detergent oils, I now use the thinnest convental detergent motor oil I can find, 5w15 and Marvel or PB Blaster and mix even parts. I'm a big fan of PB Blaster but any good penitrating oil will work. I heat it up before putting it in sometimes but leaving it in the cylinders for a week is a great idea too. Not an overnight fix.

    • @SpeedBumpGarage

Marvels' great. I also like P B Blaster. It is a great penetrating oil spray. Does wonders on rust and frozen parts.

I tried Kroil penetrating oil but not PB. Nothing moved until I pulled the head and got a big hammer 🔨!

This is a 2 year old vid now but it's new to me. I believe Project Farm did some experiments and found that a 50/50 mix of atf and acetone was the most effective rust releaser for unsticking engines. I could be wrong on who did it but somebody did and got those results. There you go, clear as mud. Lol. New subscriber.
