- In Episode 330 of the Snack Covenant, Sophie is once again joined by St. Trina, this time to discuss Elden Ring's obsession with fingers. They discuss the Two Fingers, Three Fingers, Fingercreepers, Bloody Fingers, Vyke, Shabriri, and Goldmask, as well as the symbolic use of fingers in art and religion. I don't think he was ever one of them or was trying to redeem himself in any way. "He says no kinship remains with them, their madness precludes it" which would be a pretty hardline and ignorant stance (or dishonest) for a man that used to be one.

@@jacobfreeman5444 I don’t think she’s mad at him or us but more so blood thirsty and lost all humanity, Mohg and their Bloody Fingers are just like the beast of darkness in Berserk, they just give in to the bloodshed and the blood. I doubt there is more thoughts onto that, in a way when we invade as one for entertainment we ain’t so different, I’d argue Recusants have a bit more humanity to them
Honestly, I think it's simpler for the Two Fingers (at least the one that directs us); shit went down so it either got orders from the Greater Will or pursued emergency procedures without any direct command and when we find we can't enter the Erdtree...it did not know a Tarnished wouldn't be able to enter. Maybe Demigods could, maybe Radagon did something, doesn't really matter. It took it's course of action and the player character defeating Morgott and reaching the tree is the literal first time anyone has been able to get there since the Two Fingers took the actions it did. So when you reach the Erdtree and can't enter, it has to talk to the Greater Will directly which as the Finger Reader says, takes forever (which is when they actually go all Antenna and the Finger Reader mentions burning, something the Two Fingers do not have any part in telling you cause obvi they don't want you to). So I don't think they're dumb per se, just very...limited. Shit goes sideways, they decide to use Tarnished instead and when one finally reaches the Erdtree and can't get in they have no idea what to do about it since they weren't expecting that and instead of best guessing they reach out to the Greater Will directly.

With Vyke, you are onto something with him trying to control rather than accept the Frenzied Flame. He wore his armor to protect himself, and had the goal of protectinf his maiden. This runs counter to the goal of the Frenzied Flame and its followers to destroy everything and return it to a state lf one-ness. No room for the egos of Vyke and maiden to be exceptions to the rule
Yeah, I think it's case of: Vyke is doing it to *save* someone. If he wants to save someone, he's still got something to hold on to, because he hasn't lost them yet. This makes him a bad fit for an avatar of despair / nothingness / hopelessness, so he can't be the true Lord.
That or it's simply a case of him just never becoming Elden Lord because he went mad after killing his maiden, abandoned his quest, and he's been hanging around the frenzied village ever since.
I like the first one better, but they could both work.
re: vyke, it might be that he did the ritual wrong. it’s made very clear for the player that to accept the frenzied flame we have to strip down to our bare skin, but you can clearly see the imprints of the three fingers on vyke’s armor. how would those be there if he’d have done the ritual the same way we did? I really don’t think it’s a matter of motivation since the tarnished’s personal lore is left up to the player, and the player could very well have given their tarnished vyke’s exact motivations. rather, I believe that vyke was probably much MORE desperate for the flame than us and in his rush to complete the ritual so he could protect his fingermaiden, he ignored the fine print in favor of the fastest option - to just get grabbed right away. it’s a little like orpheus turning back immediately after one single step out of hades without realizing that eurydice was several feet behind him and technically still in trapped there - he did the big strokes of everything right, he just didn’t wait long enough for the details to come into form
In that sense he kind of doomed himself and stopped his quest rather than being the lord of frenzy that would bring an end to everything, it is also fitting for his motivation to keep his maiden alive. If the Tarnished would ever listen to Shibriri without knowing of Melina strange power of distance death it’s more than likely that he is manipulating us into ultimately killing everything including her
maybe it's both: his reluctance to completely give up hope and lose himself to the Frenzy is represented by him keeping his armor on and being scarred by the Three Fingers without being fully infused by it
You are correct. The big difference is that Vyke lacked a maiden that could commune with the three fingers. His was for the two fingers.
With regards to this being a sci-fi story through a fantasy perspective, it's my headcanon that this story takes place hundreds of billions of years in the future. There are basically only white dwarf stars left, so the "stars" in elden ring are actually just shuttles for hyper advanced civilizations or consciousnesses like the numen or outer gods, respectively.
Everyone is desperately looking for a place that can still sustain life and the lands between, for whatever reason, can. Maybe it's a rogue planet with moons large enough to keep its core hot through tidal forces.

aidk if anyone will see this comment but I just lay down to sleep and a thought about your interpretation on how the Greater Will gives intellegence popped into my head and then the voice of the old narrator in the original reveal teaser of Elden Ring on E3 popped into my head saying(paraphrasing): "That which commanded the stars(Greater Will?), giving life it's fullest brilliance(intelligence?)". I think you absoluteley nailed on this one!
The Elden Ring having control over the stars (somehow) is something that's brought up a lot in unused dialogue, so it looks like it was probably a bigger deal when that first trailer was made and then it got progressively de-emphasized.
Yeah the fact that Ranni's two fingers were be very different looking to the one in the round table I always found to be kinda fascinating. It seems like there were different variants of two fingers depending on the empyrean chosen.
One thing about the four fingers. In the four toed foul foot description it states that 3 digits is considered a bad omen, so it is considerably lucky to have found this for digited foot.
I dont know if there is anything else point to four fingers being bad luck, but the way i see it they are lucky by proxy of not being three fingers.
As for the finger creepers i definitely think there is more to say about them considering they are living fingers just like the two and three fingers, to say that they are around places where the greater will is in jeopardy they are also in the carian grand study hall just before the liurnia sacred tower.
Another thing, i think Radagon, under the guise of Marika is locking the erdtree away to keep his order. Enia and the fingers expect you to get two great runes, get an audience with marika and fix the elden ring, then we see the thorns are there and the fingers go silent. In goldmasks quest he is stumped until he learns Radagon is Marika, then he immediately according to Corhyn starts doubting the golden order. Gideon thinks Marika just wants us to suffer forever because Radagon isnt letting things move on. Why was Maliketh spurned and forgotten by Marika? Morgott so devoted to the order and yet he is spurned as well? Surely its because he is an omen right? The last thing to note on this theory is why would Marika want a godslaying weapon unless it was to kill Radagon? Marika was the god and Godfrey was the lord, but whatever happened to make Radagon and Marika into one being, made Radagin just as much of a god as Marika, and i dont think the people of the lands between, maybe even Marika herself realized that. Or at least for Marika she discovered that fact just too late to stop it herself, but early enough to make a plan, thats why she doesn't care who wins even dungeater and flame of frenzy, she just wants to be free.

I thought one of vyke issues is because he let the three fingers grab him while he had armor on so it didnt fully work like with our mc.
I definitely like this explanation. The only tiny issue is that its not stated by anyone and it's not like the game lets you "fuck it up". Regardless I find it pretty likely, just not 1000% confirm-able.
My problem with Vyke and his situation is how did he get in there to see the Three Fingers with his armor on in the first place?

I honestly think that's just so the fingerprints are tied to your character specifically, because we change armour sets all the time, whereas Vyke's got an "iconic" set that's associated with him.

"...(A)fter divesting yourself of your possessions. It will surely open, and the Three Fingers will welcome you."
The Three Fingers will welcome you. Could the door the Three Fingers be behind be of their own making? And if so, do they decide who they give audience to, much like their Two Finger counterpart? Must we divest ourselves of our clothes because the Three Fingers realized what happened with Vyke?

lol I have chronic bronchitis from everything I’ve been smoking for over 10 years (cigarettes, nicotine vapes, methamphetamine, marijuana, etc. I’m sure), but thankfully I don’t get a raspy or messed up voice (im a singer, musician and producer so that would rly suck.) unfortunately tho, my lungs are very weak and combined with my sedentary lifestyle due to being disabled from my mental illnesses, I can’t breathe well at all a lot 😵 🦛

And of all of them, elleanora, with whome he used to fight dragons and adventure before becoming a cessblood, is the only one who he's trying to save as he still loves her

that talisman always weirded me out. It's the only instance of an 'uprooted' two fingers we get as far as I know so it begs some questions like... I dunno, do all fingers have 'legs', as it were? Does that actually make them 4 fingers? and, WTF?
Surprised you all didn't touch on the whole thing Tarnished Archaeologist mentioned about the Romans cutting off a finger of dead loved ones before cremating them. The idea being that the finger is a type connection to the soul.
oh boy the DLC adds a whole other layer of complication because the fingers get there own quest line and locations, and of course a boss.

12:30 I know it seems like the devs are trying very hard to focus on like Roman/Greek whatever culture and influence, European influence. But it's pretty inescapable that in almost all of eastern Asia, "4" is our "13" it's considered a very unlucky number. In Japanese I know for sure it's because "Shi" is also the sound for the word "death". So that might be why they consider 4 fingers unlucky
