  • In this episode, Sophie and Sin discuss the mysterious figure of the Gloam-Eyed Queen, leader of the Godskin Apostles. While she never appears in game (or does she?), her role in the history of the world and relationship with Queen Marika play a significant role. Who was she, how did she hold the Rune of Death before Maliketh, and why did her apostles turn against the Gods?
    TSC317. Today we discuss the origins and motivations of the Gloam Eyed Queen.

    Her pre remembering personality also kinda fits. Despite almost always watching you and having her own thoughts and opinions (such as thinking you should help Boc) she doesn't really seem to care if you do anything evil besides the flame of frenzy, which while it might not mean she's evil definitely means she doesn't have a normal "moral code". She is likely fond of the tarnished because they are quite similar to the godskins, even if she doesn't know it. They can bring death to everyone, wears the trophies of the the dead on them, and are dependent on her for power.

    I think one connection between Melina and the black knives a lot of people ignore is her name. Besides her fighting style being similar to the Black Knives, and the shape of her weapon being a non-warped version of the Black Knives, her name (thank you Hades 2) might come from Melinoe, a chthonic deity of nightmares and madness, which would be in theme with the black knives having names connected to greek underworld deities (Tyche and Alecto). So maybe, this is a little of a stretch, since they were Numen close to Marika, all Black Knives assassins might beMarika's artificial daughters, just like Millicent and her sisters are for Malenia.

    The idea of the second born beeing the spare heir is kinda interesting, because I have been wondering why Ranni was chosen as an empyrian. After all she is not one of Marikas children and Rykard and Radahn are not empyrians. So it could be that Ranni was explicitly chosen to replace the GEQ as second in line, which makes her being the one to kill Godwyn very interesting. So basically she does the one thing, that her predecessor was tasked with preventing.
    Anyway, great video as always. Your podcasts are so mach fun. :)

      The greater Will doesn't care if Ranni is one of Marikas children.
      If you think about it, the greater Will even planed for Marika to die at some point, that's why the original Elden Ring had the rune of death in it.
      That's the whole reason for empyrians. An heir to the Elden Ring when the former vessel is about to die. Before Marika, someone else was god and Palcidusax was lord.
      I guess that's why Marika turned against the greater Will. She wanted to be "eternal" but the greater Will wants there to be a circle of gods and lords, for some reason we don't know.

      My theory is that the gloam eyed queen became a blade or was sealed into one like radagon did with the Elden beast. It seems like she was early on enough to have been one of Godfrey’s children but Melina is red haired and that is a trait of radagon. So what I think happened is that they reincarnated her soul through the erdtree and used her as Melina to burn down the erdtree as one of the three cursed children of radagon. I think her curse and second identity would have been being Melina and being burned by the three fingers with no memory of her past.

  • @AssailantLF

    Sophie's theory/explanation is that the Gloam-Eyed Queen was Marika's offspring, but I have an alternative take that I think is also very plausible:
    Marika and the GEQ were rival empyreans, possibly siblings. The GEQ originally had the whole Elden Ring in her possession until Maliketh defeated her, at which point Marika claims the ER and removes the Rune of Death.
    Although my theory doesn't explain how Melina fits into the picture...

    Woohoo! Loved the video. I do wonder though about the idea that Godwin was so valuable because he was the perfect heir. Why would Marika need an heir after she made it so she wouldn't die. I still like the idea that Marika was involved with the Night of the Black Knives, it would be fitting if it was her own machinations that end up breaking and corrupting her order of the world. And perhaps the reason he was the first target was because he was too good in a sense, too powerful, too popular, and maybe with his dragon cult, too independent. Also I think Ranni is pretty honest with you, so when she lists her crimes as stealing a fragment of the rune of death, imbuing the black knives with its power, then killing her own flesh, that is probably all she did. The assassinations being either the Black Knives as an independent faction or working on another's orders (and I personally like the idea they work directly for Marika).
    Also loved the comic relief. The episode gets heavy, so here's a joke about a dead baby. Oh Jersey Miyazaki~

      Ranni had to know in detail that to be free from the clasp of the fingers, her body needs to go. She obviously did not just want to die, so to further her goals, this might have been the only way, to die in body alone, but for that someone needed to die in soul alone, otherwise the ritual don't make much sense.

    I suspect that Melina is GEQ's daughter and may be the first kindling maiden. The game implies that the tree has been burned before, so that might be the purpose she was given at the tree; to burn it. Explains why she's already burned. Might also explain why one gold eye, one gloam eye.

  • @soarel325
    @soarel325 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting theory. I don’t really buy the idea that, or that she actually held the Rune after it was removed. Scouring Black Flame says that “the black flame could once slay gods, but when Maliketh sealed Destined Death, the true power of the black flame was lost”. This to me implies that the Rune’s removal occurred in response to the threat of the Godskins rather than the cult arising after it was removed, IE the GEQ and the Godskins were a threat before Marika created the Golden Order. The GEQ feels more like a totally unrelated rival Empyrean to Marika’s also gunning for the status of Elden Ring host, who was ultimately defeated by her then her power sealed so she could never rise up against her rival that defeated her. I do definitely agree about your whole conclusion about both the game as ultimately a character study of Marika and the oversimplifications people make around the story, though

    • @CK1000997

      Godskin Apostle Robe description says that :
      "The apostles, once said to serve Destined Death [...]. But after their defeat by Maliketh, the Black Blade, the source of their power was sealed away" ;
      And Godslayer's Greatsword description tells us that :
      "the Gloam-Eyed Queen who controlled the Godskin Apostles before her defeat at the hands of Maliketh."
      So by these 2 descriptions, it implies that Maliketh defeated the Gloam-Eyed Queen and the Godskin Apostles first, then sealed the Destined Death.
      If Marika was in possession of Destined Death, it would be a weird move from her to not seal it first before defeated the Gloam-Eyed Queen.
      Not impossible, but weird with the info we have.
      Nonetheless, I found no hard proof explaining that Marika gave the Destined Death to the Gloam-Eyed Queen ; or that the Gloam-Eyed Queen is Marika's daughter either.
      So that part is open to speculation indeed.

      @Lordanonimmo I'm saying as far as it goes.... its the most logical conclusion. He is never named an emperean, but ranni was. He is LITERALLY the Golden Boy. the favored child of the ruling God. Ranni is an emperean, daughter of the ruling God's latest consort. Even if radagon and Marika were always one.... it would make even more sense. As it keeps power 100% in the family in a not so unheard of incest way, but even if they were separate beings... it still keeps power 100% in the family. Why would ranni kill the Golden boy other wise? besides being given as bride, and future God to him. All at the behest of the beast.

    I have a theory about Messmer being cursed by the Gloam-eyed Queen and this could explain a lot, im not very good to present it, but here we go. We learn that the omen twins where most likely cursed by the hornsent Grandam and that Malenia was cursed by Romina(Miquella could fit here because his curse is still some sort of stagnation), even Radagon is implied that he is cursed with red hair by the Fire Giants, but what if Melina and Messmer were cursed by GEQ?
    Messmer is born with the Abyssal serpent and he also has visions of fire, GEQ and her Godskins are associated with serpents(Godskin Apostles stretch their body and the Noble has a serpentine tail) and flames. Melina also has visions of fire and she appears to have powers similar to GEQ sealed in her eye(like Messmer has the Abyssal Serpent in his eye).
    GEQ is said that she had the Rune of Death, but for Marika to pluck it out of the Elden Ring and seal it, means that Rune of Death was part of the Elden Ring to begin with, so it isnt a stretch to say that GEQ had possessed the entire Elden Ring. This makes it easy to assume that she was the God before Marika. In the trailer we see Marika, but to me when she stands before the Divinity Gate, she looks more masculine and without a top, which could represent that it was actually Radagon. The seduction and betrayal could be Marika as Radagon seducing and betraying GEQ, taking the Elden Ring from some serpentine creature of her(or maybe her true form). This could also tie in Placidussax waiting for his god, aka GEQ, that fled before the age of the Erdtree and finally explain the reason why the Ancient Dragons attacked the capital.

    when you said that godfrey's grafting and godrick's grafting were unrelated, I'd definitely hard disagree. godfrey's image is both tied with serosh being on his back and is something that godrick aspires to be like, his entire army's motifs are built around thinking back to the glory days where godfrey was lord. I mean the grafted scion literally use a shield with serosh depicted on it. I think it's pretty apparent that godrick's grafting is a direct imitation of godfrey and serosh. it even has the thematic parallel where godrick is endlessly grafting in an attempt to offset his feebleness, while godfrey explicitly grafted serosh to limit himself.

    • @SinclairLore
      @SinclairLore  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We talk about Serosh / Grafting in our "Why did the Golden Lineage fail?" episode, if you're interested. I think it's definitely *thematically* an imitation of Serosh, to show how far the Golden Lineage has fallen, and how desperate Godrick is to live up to Godfrey's legend, I just don't know how close the actual process is (the Serosh / Godfrey thing seems closer to Radagon / Marika than the weird Frankenstein thing Godrick and Godefroy do).

      @ok-yi4mo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SinclairLore I think that it's kind of explicitly shown to be the same kind of thing, even if it's different in ways from what godrick does. it seems like there's this kind of parallel between when godrick grafts on the dragon head and when godfrey rips serosh off his back, both scenes have the same vibes when the act is being done with different payoffs. serosh does have this property where he's this living golden illusion on godfrey's back most of the time, kind of implying that not only was serosh physically grafted but that his soul is grafted too, but at the end of the day when godfrey takes him off it seems that fundamentally serosh is just a lion grafted onto godfrey's back that he has to physically rip off.

    I've been super interested by the Gloam Eyed Queen, but I'm still not sure what to think of her connection to Melina. For starters everything seems to imply Melina is Malenia and Miquella's sister, as well as Radagon's daughter, making it seem like she couldn't be the GEQ. Also i think it is very intriguing that she only has one "gloam eye" and that Melina seems almost possessed in the frenzied flame ending. The fact that Melina's eye is closed by a three fingered seal, and that eye opens when the Three fingers have effectively won is also interesting. My theory is that Marika grafted an eye of the Gloam eyed Queen onto Melina as a failsafe against the Three fingers.

    Bit late to the conversation... But is it possible the gloam eyed queen wasn't a daughter but a sister to marika. If marika was an imperean at one point, could it not stand to reason that she and the queen were siblings vying for the position of godhood, and part of marika's victory was the taking and sealing of her sister's rune? This would fit with the clear parallels of the greek/roman pantheon where the earliest interpretations were Chthonic in nature with the likes of Poseidon and Persephone being at the top but in the next age it became an Olympic focus, with both poseidon getting his death nature split off into their own entity and persephone losing much of her dominance.

    My theory is thay Melina is the gloam eyed queen and was given the rune of death in order to protect it and prevent godwyn and the other god from dying, or inherited it naturally and was given that task. She creates the godskins to help her protect it and to assist in whatever else she does. They most likely deal with skins because they were created through the power of death. When Godwyn was assassinated in Ranni's plot, marika blamed Melina for failing to protect destined death or maybe even conspiring with the assassins, and had Maliketh take it from her, maybe by force against Melina's will, maybe intentionally by force as a punishment. It could even be that she was defeated before the plot because she began to doubt Marika's choices and wanted to bring death back to the lands between. Either way, Maliketh kills Melina and swears to never let it be stolen again. The godskins are most likely enraged that their mother-figure leader has been killed and vow to bring death to the gods as retribution, most likely becoming a murderous cult over time. They could have even been created By Melina in order to bring death back to the lands between and defeat Marika and still carry the purpose of killing them and other people, just now without direction. Melina, being an empyrean and the rune of death still being bound, is reborn, with no memories and a fraction of her original power. That could also explain why she's able to materialize and de-materialize, and why she gives you torrent, who most likely belonged to Godwyn, Marika or Miquella, I like to think Godwyn and then when he died Miquella inherited him. They're both spirits, living in death. The closer to the erdtree she gets, the more of her power comes back and the more she remembers. The confusing element to this is that in the frenzied flame ending, it almost looks like when the erdree is destroyed and grace dies, whatever was suppressing her memories and powers does as well and they all come back. Maybe this happens regardless when you repair the rune or by the time you repair the rune, maybe the rune being destroyed undoes the binding of natural orders and releases them, and death localizes back in its original host seeing as how Maliketh is dead. It may also happen as soon as Maliketh dies.
    I also think she's connected to death a bit more deeply than just possessing and using the rune. She clearly channels it through her left eye, but the intersting thing is that when Maliketh took it from her and sealed it in his hand, it didn’t just go back to being a normal eye. It was sealed shut with a literal beast claw mark over it. So regardless of whether or not she's currently in possession of the rune, her left eye reflects the status of it. In the same way that Melania is deeply commected to Decay and literally becomes a rot goddess in your fight with her, in a similar immortal rebirth way, Melina may be deeply connected to death and either was or had the potential to become a goddess of death.
    As far as Maliketh lamenting about Marika's betrayal, I like to believe its about how she broke the elden ring she worked so hard to create after maliketh sealed himself away in order to maintain that vision. Kind of like a "I've dedicated my life to building this for you and you just went ahead and destroyed it all after I literally sealed myself away for the rest of eternity to preserve the status quo" thing. It could also be that the betrayal is the rune of death slowly corrupting his mind because he's not able to weild it in the same way Melina did, maybe because she inherited it more naturally instead of being given it. Also, it could be that because maliketh is a shadow and he binds the rune of death, and obeys Marika who broke the elden ring, he begins to go insane in the same way Blaidd did when Ranni tried to thwart the greater will.
    If there's any holes in this theory lmk, I'm curious if I missed something

    A small detail: Emperyeans are all almost exclusively females (except for St Trina boy) that have the potential to host one of the outer gods.
    Another thing: it’s probably less about Marika consciously giving the ruin to the Queen and more like this is a natural part of whenever Marika has children. Godwyn’s ruin has passed down to Godrick for lineage reason rather than a conscious choice.
    With that in mind, maybe she realised she needed to remove the Queen’s ruin so that she could keep the world alive the way she wants it and be the Goddess of the world forever. And/or if the Fingers said that she was the worthy host for the Elden Ring, it’s probably a jealously thing as well.

    unrelated question but certain characters are granted great runes on their birth, while most others scavenged them after the shattering, right? melania and miquella had their rune of rot and abundance prior to the shattering, ranni seems to have had hers too as she put it on the damn moon. might point being twofold, was geq given the rune of death on birth, and did godwyn even have a great rune?

      My impression is that no one had any Great Runes before the Shattering, except the Rune of Death because it was separated by Marika. And I'm not so sure Malenia and Miquella had their runes prior to the Shattering. I think they were already rotten and youthful pre-Shattering, just far less powerful until they got their Runes.
      Also there's not much evidence at all that Ranni "put her rune on the moon," it's just a popular fan theory because the moon has a sort of symbol on it and people are reaching for any explanation at all. It's just as likely that hers is the Rune of the Unborn, since she does seem to appear out of the egg during the boss fight.

    A bit that has me curious is who the Gods being killed even were? When we play, the Empyreans are demi-gods, not gods. The outer gods don't look like people and wouldn't have skins like that. Marika was a Numen, right? And the player character can be a Numen and a tarnished, so the Numen arent the Gods. A whole lot had to be censored and erased to hide her existence.
    Personally, i dont think that the GEQ is Melina, but that she takes up the mantle. It feels to me that when the rune of death was removed and in the possession of GEQ, she was cooperating with Marika at the time. Or it could be a grafting situation, like GEQ is also Melina in the same way Radagon is Marika.

    • @SinclairLore
      @SinclairLore  ปีที่แล้ว

      Enia basically says that Marika is a God(dess) because she's vessel of the Elden Ring, so it's not to do with an innate godlike property of hers. I think you have to assume "God" and "Demigod" are being used interchangeably on the Godskin stuff, because otherwise they'd only be after Marika. You can see that the clothes are made from people with golden eyes, so they seem to be going after anyone directly descended from Marika, not just the big six Demigods.

    What I think happened:
    Greater Will hated the idea of Golden Order.
    Melina was given then Rune of Death, locked in small room where you find the Blade of Calling, that poor thing. That's killing 2 birds with 1 stone, because Melina was afflicted with Flame as well. At some point Greater Will ordered Black Knife Assassin to infiltrate Lyndell, taught her how to fight and broke her out of house arrest, made her an Empyrean. She probably burnt down the Erd Tree in the process. I speculate that Marika found a way to stifle Two Fingers movement, effectively muting Greater Will, but Numen has a direct line to Greater Will (including Marika) and need not to rely on Finger Readers. Anyway, Melina then did her thing until Maliketh defeated her and sealed her eye/power by marking her eye with beast claw.
    Greater Will then plotted and killed Marika's favorite son (he was NOT Greater Will's choice, never an Empyrean). Marika went nuts, shattered the Elden Ring. Greater Will then sent Black Knife Assassins to attack Marika (injured BKA outside of bed chamber), likely succeeded and imprison her in the Erd Tree. BKA then hunts down Ranni and her entourage, because she was being very naughty.

    I'm skeptical of the idea that Marika significantly favored Godwin. The black knife assassins "had close ties to Marika herself." As far as Miyazaki lore goes I take that to mean Marika was party to at least Godwin's assassination, if not Ranni's spin on it.
    Marika's family and her actions make a lot more sense if she's committed to destroying the Erdtree. Sending Godfrey and the tarnished would be her first move towards this and the last contingency. With the possible exception or Radahn, all of her children after that point undermine the Erdtree in some way.
    Melina exists to burn it. Malenia and Miquella both create other life trees. Rykard's whole thing is blaspheming against the Erdtree. Ranni introduces undeath and decay through Godwin's corpse.
    The sealing of destined death may have been a measure to starve it out.
    Lots of horrific stuff ensues. Especially with Rykard. But its a realm spanning eldritch tree that eats people. Marika is extremely committed to murdering this tree.

    I have kinda crazy theory, Marika wanted to marry Godwyn, and I think Radagon is also her Child, probably Godwyn twin that's like why they look so much alike, that's why they were a single god even before merging together, That's why Malenia e Miquella are born affected, because they Marika and Radagon are Mother and Child, very game of thrones, but I think it could be true, because in my mind kinda unites everything, why the child of Radagon are Demigods, why he comes back very easily when called by Marika, Radagon was probably born affected by the god of the giants, she hid him, but not with the same disdain she did morgott and mohg, He as noble, but not said to be her child, that's why he is King Consort and not Lord, He already has royal blood
    the problem with this theory is there is no in-game evidence of it iahshisaihasihasi but It just works in my head

    • @emersononiverse
      @emersononiverse ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh sorry I kinda forgot the point of this comment, she marries Radagon and not Godwyn because she discover something about the truth about the golden order and the golden beast, so she tarnishes Godfrey and their man, Malenia, Ranni and Miquella are apointed as sucessors, she probably wants Godwyn to marry one of them, the golden order learns of this as Radagon is a Loyal Hound, makes the numen kill Godwyn and ranni messes both plans up, by killing her body, Marika loses it and shatters the ring.
      In this theory Marika only has Twins, Radagon and Godwyn, Malenia and Miquela, Morgott and Mohg and as a final nail in the theory, Melina and gloam eyed queen, This even makes sense on dividing the twins, you have the one that is mostly connected to the golden order and the other that is eventualy connected to an opposing force to the golden order, respectively, Death, Rot, Blood and Death again (Ice and Darkness also maybe, see bellow)
      The Gloam Eye Queen also being Ranni master, and having nearly the same face as Melina, but with the Claw mark on the other side, and she would be the one that guides ranni to do the centipede mark, to mess with both plans, as she is an Empyrean as well so she wants ranni to bring the end of the golden order, to avoid her being the new god.
      The gloam-eyed queen in this theory would be both master of Death flame and Ice and darkness, we saw that before in Sister Fried, so we could see that again.
      The major thing that jams this part of the theory is, We really don't know what happens to the Gloam eye queen/ranni master, but she seems like a mastermind type of character by the in-game lore

    Godwyn was not an Empyrean, he was far more likely being groomed to be the next Elden Lord. If we look at all the characters who have been specifically pointed out as Empyreans - Malenia - Miquella - Ranni - Marika - GEQ - because of Miquella's inclusion, I'll be careful with my phrasing and say, the prerequisite seems to be "the ability to foster life." All of these characters have the ability to birth new life. Malenia has her children (the Aoenia sisters + Millicent). GEQ birthed the Godskins. Miquella has a female alter-ego (St. Trina) and his cocoon was embedded in a pelvis/womb like structure. Ranni can give birth (she has a womb and might be why she wanted her flesh to perish). But that's just my 2 cents, great video guys!

    • @lordanonimmo7699

      Ranni is associated with the moon,wich in many mythology is associated with feminine aspects with fertility being a big thing about it.
      Alao Miquella can foster life normally,his blood is what made the Haligtree grown.

    • @Leothemoose
      @Leothemoose ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lordanonimmo7699 Good catch on the Ranni - Moon lore tidbit. As for Miquella and the Haligtree, I always assumed it was more due to him having divine blood and his epithet/theme/whatever is abundance. Fervent bountiful abundance. But the various cocoons around Elphael and the clear allusions to a pelvis and womb for containing his main cocoon and his feminine characteristics are implicit towards his ability to foster life. Also, recall what Gowry said about the maker of the unalloyed gold needle? I'm paraphrasing but it was something along the lines of how its creator must have a delicate and intricate understanding over life and life energy. All these Outer Gods - Rot - Greater Will - Formless Mother - Twinbird mother and so on want one thing and that is to manage the control over life and death i.e the power within runes i.e the life energy of all individuals in The Lands Between i.e it's still all about Souls. Even in Elden Ring. All those Golden tree stems in the background of the Elden Beast boss fight are telling us something...for why the Greater Will so easily cast aside this world. Because there are plenty of other feeding grounds under its control. But that's just my theory, I can't flesh out my thought process well in the comment section

      The issue with the timeline placement - and this may just be an issue with how it's written rather than the actual timeline they're working from - is that the Rune of Death isn't removed until Marika creates the Golden Order ("the forbidden shadow, plucked from the Golden Order upon its creation"). So for GEQ to have it, it has to have happened some time after the Golden Order is founded, otherwise nobody would able to wield the Rune of Death independently. It's a bit all over the place + we don't have much info, so I hope they clarify it in the DLC.

    Empyreans are children of a single god.
    Ranni too is a child of Marika and Radagon, if Cuckoo imagery around Radagon/Rennala marriage did not give it out already. Rennala's original daughter was also killed (that is what Cuckoo's do) and remains in unborn limbo inside amber egg, frozen by Marika as a punishment.
    Which is why Rennala went mad, trying to incarnate her cursed bio-daughter. (Though as a subversion, Ranni, cuckoo's nestling, actually does love Rennala).
    Miquella/Malenia are children of single god as well.
    Godwyn is not, he is demigod, child of Godfrey and Marika. He cannot inherit Elden Ring.
    Therefore Melina/Gloam-Eyed Queen as Empyrean must be Marika/Radagon's daughter as well. She also has Miquella's ancestor spirit steed, as game and DLC strongly hint Torrent belonging to Miquella originally.
    How did Melina came to possess Miquella's steed? Why is Melina's gloaming eye same colour as purple flames of Trina, purple sleep items, and purple amethyst amulets godskins wear?
    Sleep is traditionally regarded akin to death, and god/goddess of death related to god/goddess of sleep, as in Greek mythology.
    Melina/Trina/Miquella are so intertwined they might just be the same entity in some strange way.
