Potato: My favourite way to play is like religion into culture.
Also Potato at turn 7: Okay, we have our first warrior. Let's kill Scythia.
Ethiopia is S Tier simply because of that hat!
S for Swag.
That joke is so original!
S for slapping
Imagine copying the top comment from the actual reveal
Indirectly offending teddy?
I’d love an Emu Civ, they were key in the great emu war and led the emus to victory!
And would be enemies with Australia... the ai would often go to war... unique unit: EMU WARRIOR
Alternate leader for Australia...
A discount Ostrich leads the emus in civilization IV
Owls of Minerva would be absolutely insane with Pericle’s Greece for diplo victory!!! Tons of policy slots, tons of envoys, and great culture!
I mean, they did literaly use athens' flag for its logo :P
@@diekssus7194 The owl of minerva is the owl of athens... it represents the owl on athenas shoulder

Tamar: But
Civ fans: a GOOD civ
Also last time i was this early I lost my girlfriend
but Tamar the great is so great!!
@@akitaozaki7988 To spawn next to!
Pog Yay free cities
To be fair she’s better now, not amazing, and only in a gamemode, but better nonetheless.
I really like the idea of more multi-national actors, like the Secret Societies. I also think it would be very cool if City-states had a bit more interesting autonomy - like they could decide to declare war on another city-state; may e that let’s you “help” and nets you a new city with less grievances. But what if the target city-state’s suzerain is your arch-rival? Or the most powerful Civ at the moment? You have managed to keep a precarious peace with them for decades and avoided a bloody conflict bad for you both. But now they must respond to help their protected city-state ally/protege/dependent. And YOUR city-state is begging for help ... they are in WAY over their head ... their own fault ... but you want - no NEED - that Suzerainty bonus. So you are getting dragged into a big conflict you didn’t want ... but need to fight and win ... what do you do? That sort of thing.
I've said for a while now that there should be a diplomatic option to tell others civs to leave a CS alone if you are suzerain of it. Really tired of "siege" a CS to keep them safe or declare war as my only two options.
City-states really do need to be tweaked. Especially in terms of diplomacy.
Something I'd like to see is city-states bordering eachother have a chance to sign defensive pacts or form a united body, but still work on their own, granting other signatories their speciality and making them unable to declare war on eachother, as well as comming to each other's aid when one is under attack. On a wider scale, this could be used by players to create buffers between themselves and other players, while also making the city-states more powerful and not as much doormats as they tend to be.

@@brodydicks4174 Diety AI's hate this trick!
@@williamtheconqueror7807 I don't play with mods, so no. Why?
that 15% science is insane, maybe with this civ maybe you can achieve science victory withouth building a single campus district
choose cross cultural dialogue belief and spread religon + wat
and if babylon and fez in the game that would be good
Pretty sure the +15% science only applies to individual cities founded on hills, and not empirewide, so it sadly wouldnt count science from fez or crosscultural dialogue as they are applied to the empire
It could be a really fun video series of Potato beating Civ 6 through the different victory types without building their respective districts. He already has one for a culture victory without theater squares using Russia. Would love to see a science victory without a campus district, etc.
@@magenta5785 i understand that, but as potato said, you do want settle every city in hills anyway.
I believe with godess of earth pantheon +eiffel tower maybe you can generate 1000 faith per turn which convert into a lot of total science..
Imagine going to the moon with only high school degree lol
@@ThinkBeyondTheBox yes it would be fun indeed, otherwise im gonna try it myself ahaha
@@ThinkBeyondTheBox Science victory without campus is very doable with Norway pillaging on a naval map. Early science through Free Inquiry golden ages into pillaging all the science you need. It's not optimal to build no campuses of course and also not possible in every game but it's really fun to do when you can pull it off.
I just noticed imagine choosing Rough Rider Teddy and picking Owls of minnerva... send a trader to that CS and instantly suzerain that CS
Ahh....yes, kind of, yeah, could be a bit strong xD
If a city state has a mission requesting you send them a trade route, would Owls of Minerva and being Rough Rider Teddy instantly give you 4 envoys after sending the trade route?
And with the early policy card that gives you another envoy when you send an envoy ... thats 5
Also Georgia’s 2-for-1 ability, plus the religious belief, plus the policy is 4 for 1. Plus Owls of Minerva is 5. if they are requesting a trade route that’s 6 ... holy cow. I am starting to see why they nerfed the envoy bonuses ...
Jadwiga with Reliquaries and Voidsingers are gonna be pretty monstrous. She already provided me with one of my quickest culture victories with a lucky early relic into reliquaries, add to that the ability to generate easier relics and actually have a place to put them and that's going to be huge
Potato: Cavalry is strong, specially light and heavy.
Me: Wut?
Oh you haven't ever heard of the mysterious "medium" cavalry? It's meh.
lol i think he meant that unique cavalry that replaces the existing light and heavy cavalry is especially strong, as opposed to cavalry that replaces nothing like mounties for example (though mounties are a bad example of that as they are actually very strong as national park creators, although pretty meh as an actual unit)
@@unholyxeras8182 correct my brain is bad sometimes
Rome with the voidsingers would actually be kind of crazy. I assume he would get to start with those old god obelisks for free? You unlock them by finding a tribal village, which can happen very quickly. He would almost immediately start with extra faith in his capital, letting him get a very early pantheon.
Trajan, Eleanor and Mvemba will all be incredibly good with voidsingers.
Time to make blood pacts with Cthulhu, guys.
Was thinking the same. Rome is the way to kill the game.
Hmm, I wonder if it would upgrade your monuments to the obelisks, or just for new cities founded.
I wish Ethiopia generated grievances to states who share rivers with them when building dams ngl...
There should definitely be a dam interaction with egypt lol
Very topical
Dams in general should hinder the yields of tiles downstream
LOL. Is that an IRL political joke?
@@grahamturner2640 Yeah. Ethiopia--a country about the same size and population as Egypt--is building their own dam upriver from Egypt to gain the same benefits that Egypt already enjoys from the Aswan Dam. The long-term geopolitical impact should not be a huge issue, but in the short-term, filling the dam will reduce water to Egypt for 4-12 years (Ethiopia wants 4 and Egypt wants 12). Longer fill time means longer time for Ethiopia to benefit from the resources used today. Egypt is totally dependent on the Nile River...economically, socially, politically, etc.

N-NANI?! BAKADA?!?!
Hey potato, good to hear from you. I was wondering if you would consider making an overexplained game of civ where you go for a culture victory. I'm asking because i can't find a way to optimize this type of play early on and on late game i'm just suffering to end the culture victory just by spamming out great people, also, can't seem to find a single place where to put a national park, even though i tried... i just don't get it. Hope you consider my demand :) Stay healthy. Goodbye
Will do!
PotatoMcWhiskey Hi. Do you have a plan to make a Civilizations tier list ??
@@vitos143 he said he tried it, but everytime he advances on it, some patch or something happens and it messes up everything, and it would become outdated really fast
Maybe when the season pass benefits end
National parks are a pain. Basically you need 4 tiles that are laid out in a diamond shape with the top and bottom being one tile each while the middle is the other 2 tiles. All four tiled cannot have a city, a district, or any improvements on them like mines or lumber mills. All 4 tiles have to be charming or better. And all four must be owned by the same city. You can buy a tile in one city and swap it with another if necessary. A good way to visualize it would be a triangle mountain range - you can put the park at the base of the range. Or a horseshoe range where you put the park "inside" it. I hope this helps when planning on where to put them.
12:36: a Luxury resource with 3 chateaus and a theatre square around it would give +8 Culture. In addition to what else bonuses it provides. Let that sink in. I love it!
Spiff is going to have a field day when this update comes out.
Potato I don't know if you missed it but the Rock-Hewn Church also provides +1 appeal.
So that UI does also help you out getting more seaside resorts and national parks. ^^
I didn't miss it but I just forgot to mention it!
Also this is a dream civ for me too Tatey because its a civ that FINALLY maximizes the potential of using faith as an economic resource rather than focusing on religion and religious units. I enjoy how it's can function as a "religious defensive" civ in that it could effect religious games and the faith economy without actually having to have a religion itself. It's a piece of art.
Hermetic Order's Indoctrination seems to go along very well with Brazil as they generate a lot of Great ppl
Hell yeah, happy to see another religion into culture chad. Super excited to play Ethiopia; they feel tailor-made for me.
just at the moment i was refreshing youtube thinking "when is he gonna review ethiopia ?" !
Hype for Potato playing this one out!
Potato! Play Ethiopia on a FLAT map :)
Definitely not a flat earther civ!
Max Jahns *~Bumpy Earth Vibes~*
I'd assume that loyalty damage works something like Indie Rock bands... which can be used to flip cities REALLY quickly.
The devs actually clarified, that for those who do not own the DLC, the rough rider unique unit will still be available.
Jesus, these Societies could literally change the tier lists entirely. Some of these bonuses harmonize so well with certain cics that it's insane...
The + 4 combat strength on hills if i am not mistaken means when fighting against Ethiopia if you take defensive hill positions which give + 3 combat strength you com out negative with Ethiopia getting + 1 for you standing in “defensive” terrain. It is better to fight this man on flat ground.
From memory that's what Italy found
Imagine Fortifying on Forest Hills. +4 from Ethiopia bonus, +6 from terrain and +6 from fortification

The secret society that gives you extra trade routes would be helpful when going for a science victory since extra trade routes would give you more production

Not only can there be different leaders now but even the same leaders can have different personas. That leaves a lot of room open for development and I hope they will use that in the future. One thing I am always looking out for is a mention for new leaders. I love the idea of mixing and matching the two different bonus types of leader and civ. Mix in the same leader heading up diff civs like Eleanor and the game opens up so much more. This patch though is definitely up my alley as it is yours. Love it. Great breakdown and quick analysis here, sir PotatoMcWhiskey!
Seems like the Great Bath exploit is tailor-made for this guy's science/culture % generation trait, at least for the unethical among us... *cough* totally going to try it out *cough* =P
Throw in the medieval voidsingers as well

Well, good luck getting the great bath on deity...
@@maxjahns9063 I've done it quite a few times - but it's absolutely not easy, you're right. Then again, deity games can be a total crapshute if you even happened to spawn within friendship-brigade distance of another civ, haha.
Potato: Sometimes it can be difficult to get that +3 adjacency.
John Curtain: *laughs in Australian*
No one has picked up on the fact that the diplomatic quarter will give you culture in the base civ, as diplomatic favour is only introduced in Gathering Storm.
Joel Peters ohh that makes sense
Oooh, Lovecraft + civ...what a wonderful day :D
This updated forced me to buy the New Frontier pass thank you for explaining it better
Kinda looks like a Korea. A very powerful Civ with rather bland stat boost abilities.
I played the base game the other day as a friend had downloaded for free and I wanted to help her get into it. The game is beyond recognition now. The base game was slightly worse than civ 5 and 4 with the updates. Civ 6 is now unbelievably good and they keep improving it.
My only worry is that it's become so complicated that it's impossible to learn the game unless you have learnt it from the start.
@@mrmildman2370 A new player should learn the game by ignoring the systems that aren't core. Start at Prince or lower and don't even think about building Holy Sites, Encampments, Entertainment or Theater Districts, spies or any wonders. Learn the core, how to stay ahead in science and production, how to stay competitive in military forces, and how to use those forces to win wars, and you learn how to win at the lower difficulty levels. Learn the non-core stuff game by game and system by system as you observe the opfor behavior and imitate it in order to serve a strategy that lets you win even more easily. You need to be able to bring even non-core systems in to be flexible enough to succeed at higher difficulty levels, but most of the complexity can be ignored at first, and only gradually added to a new player's armamentarium
potato! when is the civ tier rank coming! :) I know that would take a long time but I WANT :) much love for the videos
I think the envoy changes from the new district would probably be linking all the bonuses that'd just be to the capital into that district. Which would definitely weaken early scouts.
Who needs balance when you have the rules of fun?
Amazing video, but i gotta say im kinda waiting for a science and commercial ability ish civ. That would be Amazing.
Try Germany
Netherlands can do this too.
Personally, I would rather see tall play being more powerful in the right hands like you postulated regarding the diplo district, but they need to do something about nukes + insta deleting cities
A protection against nuclear heads(?
It will make the nuke explode and destroy the tiles that are 2 tiles away from the city center without destroying the city center (?
Family lunch, interesting news, beautiful weather - and a video from my favourite Potato 🥔 What a happy Friday!
Can't wait to see you play Ethiopia! Gives me reminders me of your EU4 game
18:30 might be refering to the fact that higher tier goverments generate more envoy points. Instead it might be based on the building(s)
I've been waiting for this. I really enjoy listening to your opinion on new additions to the game.
I like Ethiopia, and I like the IDEA of the secret societies. But I'm really perplexed about why they didn't use actual historical secret societies. I'm not at all impressed with the fantasy direction they're heading in.
Who says these ones aren’t real? Maybe they’re just REALLY secret societies.
They did use generic versions of historic secret societies. There are various "Owls of Minerva [Athena]" type societies like the Illuminati, hermetic orders like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, "old god" societies (any pagan belief that existed before that belief became pagan), and Sanguine [blood] orders. Yeah, Hollywood has abused these topics (as well as Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Roman, etc., pantheons), but the societies exist/existed.
I was under the impression that all the options all game modes were optional because there fantasy. But I could be wrong.
So hyped for next week! First stop for me I think is Luxurious Catherine going Owls of Minerva
So having owls as rough rider teddy can net you 3 envoys in each city state just by having a trade route.....
Bully for you, Mr. President! 🇺🇸💪🏼🎆🥧
No. The owl's is *each* trade route rewards 1 envoy, and Teddy's corollary gain you double envoys if you have a trade route.
So I think you would need 2 trade routes
Another good civ, they've been on quite a roll since GS. Sadly I think it also highlights how desperately some of the vanilla and RaF civs need an update because they're total F tier compared to the more recently made civs.
The city state bonuses will remain the same to buildings, but the first envoy will not grant the +2 (or +4 gold) yield to the capital, it will now be granted to the new district
yessss have been waiting for this vid a day!
Just wanna say I know folks like having spies to steal gold but I feel it’s more effective to remove envoys wherever possible. Worst case at least in city states that you like, but sometimes I like to ally city states near my enemy borders.
Europe: Can I have Africa
Ethiopia: NO
Liberia: Same
America several decades back: Im here too
Liberia: UH OH
So Both have big asterisk
Italy had a signed agreement that said Ethiopia was their colony, Ethiopia had one saying they weren't. When Italy found out that the agreement hadn't actually been agreed to, they invaded, lost one battle (1st European lost to African) but then after razing a couple of villages, had a victory and decided to call it (they wow yay!) and left. So Ethiopia being left alone decided that meant they wow.
Liberia was basically as US colony used to dump freed slaves. So was one of the few places where the colonists were black
@@SilverMe2004 I like it when I wow. Feels like I've won.

I wonder if we can summon the old gods and destroy the world? Love the new cthulhu stuff.
I really wish they'd implement a Civ 5-style World Congress. Civ VI's World Congress is tiresome, IMO. The secret societies feature seems cool, though.
Now you need to do an Eleanor run with the cultist. During a golden era, she will be flipping cities like no end.
The vampire teleportation reminds me of Austria from Civ5. Build castles near enemies just like buying a city state airport and then teleporting your armies across the map.
Cause you teased this civ as a A-Tier, would love an overall civ-tier video made by you :D
I have been waiting for this Video, Mr Whiskey!
This more than ever feels like it creates challenges for new players. I guess frontier pack isn’t designed for them. But there’s a lot more layers of complexity on the game now with extra specialist buildings and secret societies etc. makes it ever harder to master.
I can’t wait for my New World Primordial map Ethiopia game with Apocalypse and Secret Societies modes both turned on. I am for sure going to have push for the great bath!!
What is the difference between pillaged and destroyed? Isn't it unusable and need in repair either way?
Destroyed requires a build chsrge to replace, pillaged is free to repair with a builder
Let's get a drinking game going. Every time you hear "really" you take a shot of tequila.

Kinda disagree on domination. lot and lots of faith + Grandmaster's Chapel >>>>>> lots of units. Not to mention Lahore ;)
Didn't one of the other Civ Games have Menelek II as the leader, or am I thinking of one of the player made mods for Civ II Gold?
This civ looks very interesting, totally love CIV going for different civ leaders than in the previous games
Rough Rider Teddy and Minerva seem like a good combo I think
It’s interesting that the secret societies are bringing more of a fantasy element to Civ 6.
Funfact: Menelik in polish is diminutive of Menel and mean hobo or dosser.
Potato: These guys are gonna be INSANE with Eleanor
Spif: Yes. Yes they are
Excited for your playthrough with them, they seem like he has an insane religious culture victory gameplan
It's basically like France, but stronger. Because buying modern armor with faith is pretty strong (OP)
I can't wait for this month's salary, definitely buying this
secret societies yes, vampires no. what weird direction is next? unicorns and dinosaurs?
Imagine voidsingers for Russia. You usually really lack slots for great works as you get so much great people. Now you have one extra slot in every city!
Андрей Светлов I was thinking of the hermanitic society because the lay lines would provide so much culture and I believe at flight all tiles with culture get truism? But voidsingers do sound better with the slot and the extra science and culture.
I just wanted to make a note of what you said early on in the video. Ethiopia has has a different leader in each game. Zara Yaqob in IV, Haile Selassie in V, and now Menelik II in VI.
A strong faith generator to then buy units with the palace building is my favorite meta atm. This civ seems to be right up my alley on that front.
Edit: Earth Godess + Voidsingers + Ethiopia = I just broke everything omg
I am really glad with this pack.. to be honnest i did not like apocalyps mode much.. but i do like the civs.. now with eteophia remember that in advanced setup you can change world age 1 of them gives maos more hill.. i do this playing scotland .. imagine how strong the courser replacement could reap havoc on such a map.. thank you potato.. cant wait for this secret society's seem super fun.. this makes me happy to have nfp on steam and xbox lol
Vampires should have all the promotions from all classes from the start. 1000000000000000000000 Combat strength is only fair.
I'm gonna be honest. I'm only excited for the huge QOL improvement that the Diplomatic Quarter means, and kinda for Ethiopia.
PS: Although I would just like to put Mozart's 40th Symphony to play in front of my green-lit obsidian-ish pointy rock exclusively because for how kinky it sounds.
32:52 I just played a game as Teddy with sanguine pact. Maya was constantly declaring war on me, and I just defended for the whole game using almost nothing but vamps. By the end of the first war my vampires could just one shot whatever she threw my way.
Now I want to play as Eleanor haralding in the Age of C'thulhu and convert everyone to the Dark One. Domination victory without building a single unit challenge baby
I think Potato is excited!
Have you considered making a video with Great Bath apocalypse mode as Ethiopia (if there start bias allows it)? I know you said it is hard to get great bath on deity but it is possible if you harvest out the production from a starting builder. The path I went to get it as the Mayans was start researching Pottery than mining. Build a builder while focusing on food while researching Pottery then start start great bath with 2 (almost 3 Pop) focusing on production. I needed two forests to harvest and jungle hills to work to pull this off but man is it fun to have so much faith.
I would love to see what god tier player such as yourself could do with that much faith, especially as a civ that gets more from faith.
Will you do an impression of the alternative Teddy Roosevelt and Catherine leadership personality?
Nvm commented too soon lmao
I feel like this update is going to have an expansion-level impact on gameplay. Secret Societies should make replaying old civs a lot more interesting, especially those that can focus on multiple victory types.
Mansa Musa and Lautaro are going to be so good now, and Ethiopia is going to be OP.
Let's go with the seven mid rolls. Gotta make those money moves.
TH-cam does it automatically I just click a button, plus I'd rather take money from advertisers and sponsorships and give the videos for free.
Haven't watched the vid, but Menelik feels like the culture equivalent of Saladin (and possibly stronger if left alone) because like you said for Arabia, these civs focus on religion to back up their main victory conditions; science for Saladin and culture for Menelik.
Are there new natural Wonder confirmed or am i crazy seeing the Mountain of the 7 colors at 6:29 ???
That's Zhangye Danxia, a natural wonder introduced in R&F dlc.
@@8roomsofelixir thanks for the info lol 😅
So, why exactly are archaeological museums better than art museums? I build mostly the latter in my cultural games because they've been easier to theme in my experience, and the great person points generated are the same. I also tend to end up with more great works than I know what to do with, and with archaeological museums in my theatre squares I'd have even fewer slots for them. Am I playing wrong?
the chancery giving faith is because chanceries were religious courts and record keeping libraries. in modern times they are now integrated into the legal system courts. just to clear up your question about why.
They can't possibly nerf city state boni that badly?
That their bonus only applies to the city with the right district and buildings.
You would have very little insentive to keep them around as independent cities...
Or am I missing something?
