    If anything gives us an incentive to stay injury free and not end up on the bike, this is it!

      Ha ha. Know what you mean. Just done an interval session at this sort of effort and only a little “better”. I think it is generally working as did 2 short 2 mile runs yesterday and aches and pains aside, aerobically it wasn’t too bad. Well done on the sub 20 on weekend - that is great progress and hope I can join you in such again before too long. For sure sub 4:00 k pace would catch me out right now.

    Well done Tim. The 20 minute test is nasty and takes real bottle. I did one 10 years ago on TrainerRoad when I was still a cyclist.
    My time trial times were very modest as I lacked power due to being very light. 20 years ago I had 26:15 for a ten mile TT on a standard road bike with no aero kit. A year later, age 42, I had 25:10 for ten mile and 65:05 for 25 mile with the same set up, but using aero bars.
    I switched completely to running in 2016 and found I was a better runner than cyclist. I also loved running more than cycling.
    I’ve been a V60 for almost 2 years now. It’s a surprisingly competitive age group. A few weeks ago I won my age category as a V60 in a Parkrun for the first time with 21:07 as my fastest time this year. There was a bit of luck involved there as some of the faster guys stayed away. Last year I was in 20 minute shape for 5K, but even that was only usually good enough for 3rd in age category in most races. I can still beat my 36 year old son in a 5K though which is very satisfying 😂.

      Some good times there! I remember it took me some years to better get the hang of 10 mile TTs. I also did my first few on standard road bike and no tri bars and even the odd 25 which was "fun" all on the drops. I've got just over 2 years to go until hit the V60 ranks. Even injury aside just doing a sub 20 5K was getting harder and harder. I like to think could eek out a few more but need to get over my Achilles injury.

    The work section in the TT position too…. Yikes! Respect that. I do not miss these at all!

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah thanks. My TT bike is easily my "best" bike so as I don't really ride outdoors these days seems best to use it and any bike races I have done in the past were either TTs or duathlons where would generally need a TT bike so always figured need to try and get used to the position. I think on this bike it is obviously setup to ride this way. Indoors practically it is not so long for long efforts as hard to say look up a screen to watch something. So here 20 mins all out seem to drag on but was pleased to do it and the odd time I tried sitting up came straight back down again as did not really help. That said I did a 25 mile time trial in 2017 when did a few outdoors TTs and I found that day I could not maintain the TT position. I recall I had "slammed" the stem so now it is higher. Funny, bit like shoe types, positions have changed and now seems all about closing gaps rather than getting as low as possible. Only so much "tweaking" I can do and I have largely given up on that and just ride. This exact position is same as my last TT at the end of 2017 which was my best at 22:20 since the late 90s when did a 21:10 but undoubtedly more aligned with aerobic fitness say of a 15 min 5K runner and not now more of a 19 min 5K runner before I got this injury.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TimGrose Ya, I watched alot of the track cycling in the Olympics and the positioning they are using, across all disciplines, is bonkers to me now. It will be a few years until it makes it way to the road… but it’s going to get even crazier. Even for UCI road events.
      The last “aero” bars I had on a bike were way back when during the Greg LeMond era peak…. 😂

      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SagasuRunning ah my first time trials were "on the drops" as were just before Greg Lemond used them in the TDF. Remember in those early days some had them very angled up (like now) and others very "flat".

      Ha ha thanks. I did actually do a Zwift race last Saturday but was short on time so decided not to film it. Was rather typical of my previous ones - albeit not many. Stayed with leaders for a bit, got dropped, time trialled the rest of it and felt worked very hard to hold off a few around me. That said I wasn't far off the mark and it wasn't a stupidly crazy start where you set a 5 min Watts recent best in first 5 mins. Think I might try another mass one and/or look for a time trial massed start race which has no drafting so is more like a running race in that can work off others without any real drafting assistance. Not sure whether cyclists on Zwift are just way better than the runners and/or bit of me being a better runner but even D group rides never seem like "jogs" whereas a D group run is often only a bit quicker than a walk.

      Thanks! Over the years I often dabbled in outdoor bike TTs (10s or 25s) and the odd duathlon. I was even in the GB team for the Duathlon World Age Group champs back in 97 and 98. I had a "trainer" of sorts back then but nothing now where can control your efforts to a certain wattage and some "entertainment" from Zwift. Was "OK" at breast stroke at school and did few a galas but never really mastered the crawl so never really got into triathlon. I recall doing one short one where spent the entire race gaining positions after relatively slow swim. Perhaps one thing (crawl that is) I would liked to have been able to do more properly. Out of interest, why did you stop triathlon? I must say when was focusing in duathlon in those two years I felt I became a jack of all trades and master of none and that sort of annoyed so after that I went back to the track and had a few decent seasons before age started catching up with and moved to the marathon :)

      Good luck! I spent quite a lot of time debating whether to do it or not yesterday before finally started. Can't deny it is daunting and it does hurt - a lot - but ultimately very rewarding. In a way I found the 5 minute hard "warm up" a good gauge of what was possible and mentally was a case of doing it again and then sort of having to do it three more times without rest when each one felt harder and harder. Sort of helps to see the average in the 20 min section but my best laid plans to start a little easier soon went out the window as seemed a very gradual slowing until the last minute when felt could then give it everything and anything I had left.

      Ah that's annoying but I do think Zwift on the bike is the best substitute. Even though I have done a fair bit of cycling in the past, like anything get rusty if don't do it and certainly have seen decent progress in the last 2 months or so since started cycling again. After this FTP test though, I think I have got to the point of having to work extremely hard to progress again. I did try a very low key Zwift race last weekend and that a more "interesting" way of doing a hard ride in that had to do gear changes and try to close gaps etc etc

      @@TimGrose Thanks for your reply👍 Yes Zwift racing is a completely different thing. I have participated in many Zwift races. But was pretty miserable. I've always been best at just cycling the same watts constantly. But for me, online cycling has really been a game changer. I have almost the same setup as you (I have Neo 2T). I have two bikes, a racing bike and a tt bike which were always mounted on the home trainers. and then I used some other bikes outside. I was once a much bigger bike geek than a shoe geek. I built my own bikes. constantly tried to optimize my position to save as many watts as possible. So I have cycled many thousands of kilometers when training for Ironman. but in 2024 I haven't cycled at all. so I was a bit excited to see what my data would show today. Unfortunately, I can't stand getting my heart rate up very high right now. But my Garmin said my VO2 Max was 64 today. It is an OK starting point. When I hopefully feel better again I will try to complete the FTP Test. And then it will be exciting to see if I still have some power in my legs.

      @@JS-Treadmill-Running yeah I have 5 bikes although the other 4 are rather ancient from the eariy to mid 90s but I have raced time trials and/or duathlons on 3 of then and the other is a MTB anyway. 64 VO2 Max is good. As you have may have seen my bike one is only 50 and running one 55 right now. Back in the day I got 70.5 in a lab treadmill test but I could run sub 2 800s and 15 min 5Ks back then. Be nice to see how I can get my bike VO2 Max up - far less “obvious” than an FTP
      “score”. Know what you mean about pushing yourself. This is probably hardest have tried for this sort of length of effort for a good while and I think I get more nervous for the pain. Always good after though as glad did it.

      @@TimGrose exciting. I didn't know you participated in the duathlon 👍💪🙂. I knew you had run some really good times when you were a little younger💪. I also don't know how much you can trust garmin's VO2 MAX. I made a short video about my training yesterday. It has not been many weeks since my running VO2 MAX was 70. I think you need a laboratory to be completely sure of the data. But in the past I usually have a VO2 MAX in the late 70s both running and cycling. again based on Garmin data. But back then I was 100% passionate about my sleep training and diet. So much so that people thought I was crazy. I did nothing but go to work train and sleep for 8 years. But then a dog ran out in front of me and then everything ended. today I just run for fun, drink too much Coke and eat too many chips and sweets. But I still don't drink alcohol. because it was a drunken alcoholic who destroyed all my dreams.

    Gah, I feel the pain of those 20 minute efforts. The good lady did check what I was watching as you got the last few minutes of that effort! 😂 How have you found your cadence as you've got older? I used to happily spin 95-105 when i was in my 20s and early 30s, but would struggle with that now. Good effort and inspiring to watch. I've had a month of riding in Spain and I'm tempted to see what I could do at the moment...

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@IRunDaily yeah was blowing hard in this for sure! Cadence is an odd one as am finding am naturally doing about 80 rpm on Zwift but when it adds tougher it has been dropping to more like 70 which does then feel way too low. Outside I have always felt my cadence is a lot higher and in TT outdoor races getting towards 100. That said have only done one ride outside in recent times and that was short and did not have a working cadence meter. Something I need to watch as my left knee has started to get a little sore after recent bike sessions and I think low cadence isn’t helping.

    I have been dealing with a proximal hamstring tendinopathy injury myself Tim , 9 weeks now , I can run slowly but any speed work flares it up , been doing strength twice a week. But I have also been doing a lot of cycling . The good old bicycle is much easier on the body that's for sure

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Since turning 40 (now at 57 a while ago) I have a lot of hamstring pulls - some worse than others. I have even pulled it twice just "running along" not even doing fast. So yeah it is a frustrating injury if fortunately one that has, touch wood, always tended to right itself after about that 2 month period coupled with some physio sessions, massage gun and just being cautious - speed work, as you say, is most risky. I have also found now I tend to limit my track sessions and do most of my faster work in straight lines on the road as always feel running round a bend is more risky for my hamstrings. At least with the biking I feel I am maintaining some feeling in the legs of having some fitness. I remember after largely doing "nothing" in June I was starting to not feel like an "athlete" at all and that's not great if you want to try and be one. At the moment my issue is Achilles related so, on the bike, been focusing on TT like efforts rather than short sprints that need to engage Achilles a bit more acceleration. Anyway hope it clears up soon.

Otherwise I have 2 pairs of Incyclence ones I like and Hilly Monoskin ones. I tried the Shyu ones where can match your socks with some shoes and are OK especially if like something just a bit thicker. TBH though I don't experiment too much with socks. If they feel nice to me and don't give me blisters will keep wearing the same ones.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I always been a bit of an "occassional" participant in bike TTs and, to a less extent duathlons. I did my first "club 10" bike time trial at uni in Norwich in the late 80s and even rode in things like the BUSF 10 mile TT race as well as the athletics one. I remember one season when I was came across (or behind) Matt de Freitas I was even doing 1500s around 4 mins one weekend and a bike TT the next. In 2017 when I seemed to have a similar Achilles injury I had a full season of outdoor TTs, joined a bike club, did a few chaingain sessions with them and even a team TT which needed more work as I got dropped just after half way - like the 4th rider in track team pursuits. One thing I never really "worked out" despite all this is how best to blend bike and run training to best help the running. I feel running fitness sort of works better for biking as a cross over. Always tended to feel had "dead legs" for running if did too much cycling. Interesting likes of Steve Winder used to do loads of cycling but could argue has become better as a runner when was forced to focus more on it. The other "problem" with cycling is having to look not only yourself but all your equipment especially if you actually venture outdoors LOL ! And if you think can spend a lot on "hype" running shoes it is nothing like the money you can spend in bike shops in the hope of "for free" speed gains :)

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also think running is practically so much easier. I keep a "quiver" of shoes in my car and by and large I can do a run from whereever I happen to be. In 2017 I used to pack my bike in as well for such trips but then you start to worry far more about it being "visible" if park it on and then if get it out and go for a ride, what happens if get a puncture or other mechanical in the middle of nowhere. So, in a way, it is nice to have the bike "stationary" but even with a ride like this that I want to film the "get ready" time is far longer than otherwise. Still nice I feel to record these rides for my own "reference" and if somebody wants to watch a runner really at heart doing "cross training" and suffering an awful lot so much the better. On that front that is something I find "harder" now when younger. You know these things are going to hurt - a lot but ultimately you can't always do the "80" in 80-20 if want to do the best you can.
