Bass players are like the tight rope when someone is walking across it. You don't really pay that close attention to it when you're watching, but when it's suddenly gone. Yeah, you fuckin' notice.
lol Mr Myung has an air about him like "Ok, done that bit. What you got for me next Mr Petrucci?". Kinda looks like he's thinking about what he's maybe gonna have for dinner later - such a natural, laid-back player.
I as a drummer am impressed that both of John and John remember all the notes to songs like this. There is no real pattern to make it easy to remember but still, they are spot on. Impressive
Can't say I'm the biggest fan of their work overall, but you'd have to be mental or lying to say that isn't a masterclass in musicianship right there. All virtuosos in their instruments and one of the best displays I've ever seen.
This is the first Dream Theatre track I’ve listened to. I was always a massive Yes and Genesis fan, and I always said what’s the point of playing so fast if you can’t hear the notes. Well I heard every one of those, from the whole band. Insane musicianship and multi layered composition. I don’t really know what to say other than that was amazing!
Yes are amazing, not been into Genesis much (maybe, yet).. and then Dreamtheater.. they are musically evolved. There are issues with songs where the balance between musicianship and musicality is skewed.. but that's the price. They're honest and accomplished, people playing and pushing themselves. Always a joy.
The sound that the entire band stands on! We forget about our bassist's sometimes but they provide such a depth to the music. Thank you John for being such a DRIVING force to the band.
Fucking awesome song! Love the whole Metropolis album! I think it's their best! I can't believe it took me so long to explore this progressive metal band. I usually listen to older stuff like classic rock, progressive rock, blues-rock, psychedelic rock, jazz, blues, old rhythm and blues, classical, and metal.... Took me some time to find this great band. Love progressive metal.
I've finally found the secret behind John Myungs secret behind not getting the cramp over all cramps in his hand. He uses three fingers instead of two!
MrTheMark21 Sorry, but a bassist is not just good when he is fast, he has to serve the band. For example a jazz bassist doesn't always need 3 fingers... I don't know if you say that steve harris isn't a good bass player?
Damnut chaps, this wasnt a comment about what defines a good bassist. This was a comment stating the fact that if you use three fingers instead of two you wont get a bloody cramp when playing fast shit for a long time
"The Dance Of Eternity", is a 6 minute long instrumental on the "Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" album, it has 128 time changes, this isn't The Dance Of Eternity. This is /watch?v=dsvRBxPYC6E
I can't tell who's saying what so I'm just going to put my own two cents worth in. Yes, Instrumedley does have Dance of eternity in it, but this is because Instrumedley is a MEDLEY (hence its name). The Dance of eternity is something entirely different to the song that is played on this video.
Man if TH-cam had tip jars for videos. The level of skill required to play this song is just... no. I'd look up the tabs but it would just look like this 488517537691851035915830138571895719379698121515161718131922290519063967
For a few years I thought the "live at Budokan" was recorded in a studio. It was my first DT album and I didn't pay attention to the title, I just assumed it is done in a studio because it's so perfect.
it was actually re-recorded in studio. check out the sound and vid at 4:20... yes, drums are live, as well as probably 80% of other instruments, but anyway I was disappointed when I realized they re-recorded this "live" concert
I guess it's understandable if they only "touch-up" the sound, or maybe even "borrow" the sound from a different concert. If they haven't, John's mistake would have really stood out in the album.
My first thought: It's like listening to a fusion of John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth and Stanley Clark in an inception stage of progressive rock on "steroids".
BIG THANKS to whoever snatched it from the show's stage projection room !!! This is GREAT Video . It needs to be archived somewhere as a future religion document might get.
Wow! I always thought like that since the first time that I heard Metropolis Pt 1 in 1997. Sonic 3 was my favourite game in Megadrive III! Maybe the game had been a inspiration to them :D
My first thought: It's like listening to a fusion of John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth and Stanley Clark in an inception stage of progressive rock on "steroids".
I insist, Myung is not a human being, is an android from the future infiltrated among us.
yeah especially since he doesnt like to interview and he keeps to himself
He seems like one
No head banging, no jumping all over...everyone is so focused to deliver that quality we all know and love about them...awesome.
fuck the head banging, tis moronic, give me talent, give me educated musical prowess.
How the fuck would you even headbang to Dance of Eternity? "Oh yea, dude. I headbang in 13/16"
Darrothan windmill. nuff said.
You're all fun at parties it seems.
I think they have to really concentrate to keep time, so no time for headbanging.
Bass players are like the tight rope when someone is walking across it. You don't really pay that close attention to it when you're watching, but when it's suddenly gone. Yeah, you fuckin' notice.
Sheik yorbouti
This is DISCIPLINE
Totally agree
This is Dream Theater
James LaBrie just nailed every single note, he's the best singer in the world!!
not even close ! u stupid ?
When i feel down and frustrated on my bass learning i come here for inspiration. Tons of respect Mr. Myung!
12 minutes and 20 seconds of my life well spent!
4:58 - 5:05
john myung's greatest movement on stage.
+Pedro Affonso Cavalcante de Olieveira It's like Jesus himself came down and choreographed it. Simply miraculous!
Pedro Affonso Cavalcante de Olieveira 9:55 - 10:01
Back in the day he used to headbang like fuck, it was quality
He really went all in with those moves. Glad we have it recorded.
lol Mr Myung has an air about him like "Ok, done that bit. What you got for me next Mr Petrucci?". Kinda looks like he's thinking about what he's maybe gonna have for dinner later - such a natural, laid-back player.

4:24 John's just like "oh yeah, the bass solo…" like it's nothing :')
I mean, it is the bass solo from a song called Metropolis, where he does a bass solo.
Gotta love the lyrics, fucking top notch
+Pekka Laitinen the best of the best, nothing can top this lyric TTvTT
+Pekka Laitinen you. i like you.
+Pekka Laitinen YOURE FINNISH
As long as this band is not the most famous band in the world, I know that something is wrong.
It's impossible, to me, playing millions of notes in 12 minutes in a such perfect way!!!!
This guy literally never ages.
The secret is to never talk to anyone. I also like how everything he wears is just black.
Can't say I'm the biggest fan of their work overall, but you'd have to be mental or lying to say that isn't a masterclass in musicianship right there. All virtuosos in their instruments and one of the best displays I've ever seen.
Thank you for giving me the best 12 minutes of my life
This is the first Dream Theatre track I’ve listened to. I was always a massive Yes and Genesis fan, and I always said what’s the point of playing so fast if you can’t hear the notes. Better than Portnoy.
The 8:00 part blows my mind every single time
Fucking awesome song! Love the whole Metropolis album! I think it's their best! I can't believe it took me so long to explore this progressive metal band. Man i wish Mike Portnoy never left...
Well, now he's back!
Uuuooou 4:26 Chega a ser alucinante! Myung é o melhor.
I've finally found the secret behind John Myungs secret behind not getting the cramp over all cramps in his hand. He uses three fingers instead of two!
No good bassist only use 2 fingers...
MrTheMark21 no true at all, many mainly use two other than in very fast situations which this genre implies. Just think of Jaco Pastorius for example
Nicoletta Leonardi jaco the best bassist in the world!
This was a comment stating the fact that if you use three fingers instead of two you wont get a bloody cramp when playing fast shit for a long time
If you don’t know where/when this happened, it’s Live Budokan Hall 2004
This is Dream Theaters Instrumedely not the dance of eternity just sayin... Still amazing though, favourite band of all time!
You are wrong. They have a similar place but they are different. Listen to both songs and you'll see the difference.
Did u even hear Dance of eternity???
Refat Hossain Yes of course

These 4 men are on exactly the same page musically it is a joy to watch.
Labrie really did an awesome job here. .perfect!
Tanto talento junto en una banda, es increíble la complejidad con la que tocan
この頃のD.Tが

WHEN YOU HAVE THE SAME BASS AS JOHN MYUNG!!!!!!!! My life is complete
I love how Portnoy give him some hints
I love the bass sound of intro...
4:23 fucking overdubs man - _ -'
I thought I was the only one noticing it! Backing tracks?
Man if TH-cam had tip jars for videos. The level of skill required to play this song is just... no. I'd look up the tabs but it would just look like this 488517537691851035915830138571895719379698121515161718131922290519063967
Doc Reviews The intro for the bass is just 3s on the Low B string (fattest string)
Doc Reviews and occasional mutes
That was like a...a...band solo. I can't think of any other term for that.
very very sick! my brain blows up!
luxurious, grand, and the best 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Sense of Music!! I love this so much!!!!
John is the best bassist of the universe!

Godlike Myung!!!
What an amazing composition of music!
SONO DEI MOSTRIIIIIII!!
double john is very nice
is it my impression or dream theater's bass and guitar do the same thing almost every time in almost every song?
4:40 - 5:10 : it sounds so like a sonic level from megadrive.
LOL, awesome!
Wow! I always thought like that since the first time that I heard Metropolis Pt 1 in 1997. Sonic 3 was my favourite game in Megadrive III! Maybe the game had been a inspiration to them :D
It's Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper.
Nice cover dude!
