After 1989 the Monte Carlo really started going down hill, they also stoped putting the 454 V8 so that really where it started, in the early 90's everyone was conscerned about gas and fwd was the way Chevrolet went because they got better gas mileage. Fwd brought on some of Chevrolets worst cars aka the Lumina/2 door Lumina Monte Carlo Wanna Be, after 1995 Chevy quit making the Impala Rwd and did the same to it as they did to the Monte Carlo. But the Impala was not as much a disappointment than the Carlo was when they release the first Carlo on 2 decades to not have an option with a V8, and fn front wheel drive. Thanks Chevy for ruining my favorite Car. The Carlo😢
I have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS Limited edition, my first car, and I can say this car is great. Bought it at 172k miles for $1500 and I've only ever had one issue with it, which was my oil pressure sending unit. About $20 to fix, but kind of a pain. Other than that my car has been amazing, especially for the price. I wish it came with a manual alternative, but anyways. It's a blast to drive and I definitely recommend it as a first car. I had someone weld on some Flowmaster Super 44s and I love it even more.
I've got an Intimidator SS with less miles and a pretty decent setup, pushing around 270hp with just some minor bolt ons. And they handle so well especially with aftermarket sway bars and coilovers

@tyrantfuryre To be fair GM never changed this engine specs since it's debut in 1996. That's what they did to keep itself alive and save production costs. They kept the motor for this long since people loved it. Its a lot better than the headgasket prone 3100/3400 v6's. Also 2005 was the last year of the Series 2, they already had the series 3 supercharged motors "rated" at 260hp implemented in the GTP. I never believe the ratings. I bet if it's dynoed, it put more than 240hp.

Almost any car brand will underrate their hp ratings, so it's cheaper to sell insurance. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 260hp with 300 lbs torque at the crank if you have CAI.
