Even as a boy growing up in Germany, Klaus loved opera, and he loved imitating opera, including sopranos, which he discovered he could do, unlike almost any other man. When he got older, he was an usher at an opera house so he could listen to live performance regularly. When he immigrated, he came to New York and worked mainly working as a pastry chef and did jobs, and had no place for his music. Then one day he went to a very alternative talent show, and when he began to sing, people could not believe it. Back at that time, people did not know what to do with this sort of male soprano, so his career was limited to very unusual pop music that took advantage of it. He also adopted a very eccentric persona that was quite unique. I strongly recommend watching the documentary Nomi Song to learn his story. It encapsulates not only his life life but what life was like in the 1970s Greenwich Village in New York. He was also very typical of the many male artists who died from AIDS far far far too young.

What a lovely and soulful reaction Magne. Thank you very much for that.
So Stefan was right when he thought you would like it and so we all enjoyed a wonderful reaction to Klaus Nomi.
How sad that Klaus cannot please us today with his extraordinary talent. It's so tragic. A gifted artist reinvents himself, begins a steep career and is then torn from life far too early by a terrible illness. I think that otherwise he would have made an incredible number of people happy with his talent to this day.
Thank you again Magne and stay as you are for even more touching reactions.

      Hello Thomas!
Thank you for your kind words!
Stefan and you had absolutely right. I really enjoyed watching Klaus Nomi!
A very refreshing and extraordinary artist!
He had a sad ending, but still lives, through the wonderful art that he made.
      Thank you for reccomending him.
      Peace and love

I don’t normally comment on reaction videos but seing you GET what this fabulous artist is about made my day. So a great big thank you for that.
He was such a lovely man, there is a video documentary on TH-cam about him, I love the part where he is baking, he was a trained baker, on a TV show. I personally think that this was the inspiration for the character of Edward sizorhands.
In regards to Bowie try starting with the clip for Ashes to Ashes, a classic. I think you will love the aesthetics of that one too.

@@Magnereacts I see that you had a fourth video but apparently it fell victim of the dread copyright infringement ... Well here's a song to make you happy (I hope), it's a song with environmental concerns and it's called Filthy Dirty South from a fantastic band called Rising Appalachia, it's not metal and you don't have to react to it. Performing Arts was a big part of David Bowies early years and I can see how Klaus would have been within Bowie's radar of Artists he would have worked with.. being into Bowie I would like see their work together too.. very interesting... Klaus is quite unique and it's a shame as you said he's no longer with us... many of the greats are gone now... but I'm love that we can still see these great performances... and such a powerful voice...
    Nice one Magne..

I'm happy i could introduce you to Klaus! Absolutely wonderful. In pop culture this performance could look "strange/crazy/innovative" , but at a opera-stage this is totally normal 😀

@@Magnereacts it's very Bowie late 70s early 80s style.. Bowie was in west Berlin in the late 70s to get over his time in the USA...also I think Klaus would have fitted in, in the new romantic era of the early 80s in the UK so well... and after just seeing him do a version of "the man who sold the world " with Bowie, I get him even more... I seen some Oprah and understand what you was saying but here was nothing strange about him to Me... infact a very pleasant surprise... thanks again.

I saw Klaus Nomi with David Bowie on Saturday Night Live in 1979. It was one of the first musical performances I got excited about. You should watch them sing The Man who Sold The World. Later Klaus Nomi did Total Eclipse in the music film Urgh A Music War and I didn't realize for years that he was already dead from AIDS at that time. The documentary NOMI SONG is great to see his story

Klaus learned to sing opera in his native Germany. His first appearance was at a NYC showcase called New Wave Vaudeville. The audience had no idea what to expect - having watched a number of interesting local performance, punk and new wave acts. He just blew them away. Such a loss. It's hard to imagine what he could have moved onto. I feel like this could be the best example of his opera chops.

There is stunning footage of a later performance with a full orchestra, and it seemed that he had been suffering by then and the fragility of that final performance was devastating. I wept uncontrollably when I saw that video just last year for the first time.

    The instrument is called "harpsichord".)
