    You've discovered Klaus Nomi! I'm impressed. He released two albums (and one posthumous album) in a career cut short by AIDS. He was a unique talent that merged opera, German cabaret and 80s pop. Some other songs to check out are "Total Eclipse", "The Cold Song", "After the Fall" and "Simple Man".

    “Total Eclipse”, “Ding Dong (the witch is dead)” and “Cold Song” are all great Klause Nomi songs. He also did a great over of “Lightning Striking”. He was such a great talent!

    Klaus Nomi had a phenomenal voice and died far too early. He always appeared on stage in rather bizarre costumes with his face painted white. "The Cold Song" (also known as "What Power Art Thou") that many have mentioned is actually the aria of the Genie of the Frost in Henry Purcell's opera "King Arthur". He is trembling because he feels so cold and therefore sings in a kind of stutter voice. Highly recommended!

      I've always been fascinated by singers who sang their own epitaphs, knowing their deaths were imminent. What a tragic and powerful piece. This enters the pantheon along with Johnny Cash's "Hurt," David Bowie's "Lazarus," Warren Zevon's "Keep Me In Your Heart" and Leonard Cohen's "You Want it Darker."

    Impressive that you'd do Klaus Nomi. Definitely on the fringes ;-)
    My first exposure to him was "Total Eclipse" from "Urge! A Music War", a concert film from 1982
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urgh!_A_Music_War
    Never really got into him, but definitely had 'something' :-D
    I'd suggest checking out Nina Hagen if you find this type of performing 'interesting'... even if you don't, she's something else, too :-D

    Nomi is his own style of art-pop. His costumes and bizarre sound made him an idol in the new wave/new romantics scene. It's really unique! Musically (minus Nomi's vocals) this is also a bit like early Gary Numan.

      Though he was already using unusual costumes in his act, I believe that Bowie's outfit in this performance inspired Nomi's plastic tux.

    • @annabackman3028
      @annabackman3028 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall correctly, Nomi tried to get his hands on Bowie's costume, but that didn't work out. I think he went to the shop which created Bowie's, but it was way too expensive. I can't remember if if he had a cheaper place to make it or if he managed to make it himself 😳🫣.
      Anyway, he never had Bowie's costume.

      I’d read that Bowie designed the costume he wore on SNL which Nomi “adopted” later on.
      His live version of “Cold Song” is one of the most haunting things you’ll ever see. He’s clearly very ill at that stage and can barely walk, but belts out an incredible vocal that leaves chills.

    When he first landed in NYC, his posters paraphrased the Star Blazers phrase: "I came from Outer Space to save the human race." "Total Eclipse" and "Lightening Strikes" are awesome. Perhaps the best example of his opera chops is the "Cold Song," recorded not long before his untimely death.

    • @annabackman3028
      @annabackman3028 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there IS a connection between Nomi and Sparks. Or two, but one, eh, yeah. Both Christian Hoffman (who wrote some songs for Nomi and became his 'musical director') and Ann Magnusson (who was the director of the Vaudeville show Nomi had a sort of breakthrough in) have worked with Sparks. Russell sings on a track (Devil May Care) on Hoffman's album '&' , 2002, also produced by Earle Mankey, the former Sparks member, and Ann Magnusson did a part in Sparks' (Radio!, commissioned by the Swedish public radio) musical 'The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman' at the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011. Hoffman lived in the LA area in the late sixties - early seventies. They all were a little bit of odd balls, I'm sure they knew about each other. Hoffman moved to New York, Ron and Russell to England. I can definitely imagine Hoffman was aware of Sparks albums, both the two first, 'Halfnelson'/'Sparks', 1971, 'A Woofer In A Tweeter's Clothing', 1972, and the following albums; 'Kimono My House' + 'Propaganda', 1974*, 'Indiscreet', 1975, 'Big Beat', 1976, 'No. One Song In Heaven', produced by Giorgio Moroder in the summer 1978, but wasn't accepted by any label until 1979, when it was released in September, yet ahead of time.
      Sparks made another two albums with Moroder's "stable", supervised by the master himself, 'Terminal Jive', 1980 and 'Whomp That Sucker', 1981, the latter with the typical Sparks lyrics, but definitely heading to the coming sound of eighties, where they actually hoovered around for a couple of years.
      If Hoffman didn't notice them anytime under those years, I would be very surprised.
      The eighties Ron and Russell spent most of their time in America, pretty occupied with their own stuff, but as they always have been interested in non mainstream music they should have known about Nomi too.
      Klaus Nomi came to New York 1972. He had some opera training, and took lessons in NY when he could afford it. Among other minor jobs he made pastry to pay his bills.
      He got small parts in off-Broadway shows, but in 1977 he stumbled over the Vaudeville movement in New York, came in contact with Ann Magnusson, the director, and got his own number in the show. Ann Magnusson and the producers of the show presented him to Christian Hoffman, normally the songwriter for The Mumps, who supported Nomi nearly the rest of the time before Klaus Nomi so tragically past away, in August 1983, one of the first celebrities to get AIDS, as it developed to, since there was no treatment for it yet.
      Ann Magnusson and Christian Hoffman have worked together a lot during the years since.
      *'Propaganda' was released in the UK in November 1974, but in the US in January 1975.

    I like Klaus Nomi a lot, but I am a huge fan of SPARKS ✨💖.
    If you look for a comment by "Lord Elpus", apparently made at the same time this video was published, you can read my reply there. Info about Nomi, Sparks AND a connection between them.
    I also have a suggestion, if you want to listen to an IMPRESSIVE singer;
    A young man from Kazakstan, 28, who definitely is one of the best singers alive. Believe me! Remember, I'm a Sparks fan, but DIMASH KUDAIBERGEN is DEFINITELY worth a listen. He sings in over ten languages, speaks Kazak, Russian and some English, also a little bit Mandarin (some variety of Chinese anyway 🤔)
    Is fully school trained in opera, but don't sing opera per se, but he has an INCREDIBLE voice control and happily mixes all kinds of singing styles and technics in practically any range (7+octaves 🤪😅).
    'Stranger' (English)
    or 'SOS d'un terrien de détresse' (French, from the French-Canadian musical 'Starmania', late seventies, a handful to sing!)
    Dimash had his international breakthrough in the Chinese TV show/competition "The Singer" 2017, where he sang this as his first contribution. The morning after he had security guards outside his door at the hotel. Young, mostly female, new fans were in the danger zone of storming the hotel 🤣🤣🤣🤣! China!
    No, he didn't win, he was invited as a wild card, and foreigners weren't allowed to win.
    There are dozens of live recordings of this song, but I personally think this is the best, even though it lacks a bit technically. He shows more spontaneous emotions than in the later recordings.
    It's also a little interesting to follow how he has evolved since then. If you want to hear more, and you will 😆!!
    Note! 'Stranger' and many more EASILY GET BLOCKED! Dimash's people are notorious, so for safety dim the video or cover the screen with the text: "Covered due to rights" or something!

    Evening, Justin. Dave from London, near the Blue Piccadilly (tube/subway line). Last time I heard Klaus Nomi was on the soundtrack to the recent US coming-of-age TV drama We Are Who We Are. Pretty eclectic mix on the soundtrack - from classical (Adams, Dutilleux) to rap/hip hop (Kendrick Lamarr, Loyle Carner, Blood Orange) via classic rock (Bowie, Stones, Radiohead). Yes, it's 'popera', but Klaus, who has a huge octave range and lovely, clear voice, steers very close to novelty. For a modern take on opera, I prefer Filippa Giordano. P.S. my song ref Blue Piccadilly is by The Feeling.

I know you will like them both. Also, I know you didn't like the one song you heard from Comus but I would urge you to try them one more time with their song "The Herald" as it is nothing like the last song. I like countertenor in Renaissance and Baroque music but not in this song. Alex Potter is a great countertenor and his interpretation of Vivaldi’s “Cum Dederit” is fantastic. I’d add a TH-cam link but my post will get deleted if I do.
    I sang countertenor in a chamber choir in college (I’m a baritone but I can sing falsetto). The highlight of my “career” was singing the alto solo in Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb for a few performances. It’s an odd piece so I wouldn’t recommend it, although I grew to like it.

He'd worked with Bowie before going solo, and his mix of opera, pop, and disco, was new, fresh and very entertaining. And this, always a fave of mine. Back then he was almost unheard of here, and his stuff unavailable. I had to have a friend holidaying in NYC (KN, particularly big there), get his first two albums for me there. Here's a crackin' vid from a French tv show, he sings live over a backing track. Love the dancers 🙂
