Hi! Fun fact about John Longstreth. I'm his big sister, and our father was a professional Jazz musician (Russ Long). John was playing along to Buddy Rich by age 3.

Saw him in New Zealand with origin a few years ago. His feet almost become a blur. We met him in the street and got all shy like girls meeting beiber, but that's how metal heads get when they see one of the greatest drummers of all time just walking by. Please pass on my appreciation for them bothering to come all the way over here. Many bands don't bother

Flip the script! Since the metal community seems to be your main subscriber base. How about a video where you show the community an amazing jazz drummer? Particularly, for those in the metal community who haven't yet dove into jazz. Make the community aware of great jazz or at least accelerate learning jazz.

Origin is so good. I saw them at a local dive bar more than 10 years ago, and there was NOBODY there. It was wild. They were in town during the Drake relays in Drake neighborhood, so it was just empty. Maybe, and I mean this literally, 5 paying customers.
They still played like it was a packed house. Absolute mad men. I was noshing with my friend, we were the only two and everyone else was at the bar, and they just played their heart out.
One if the coolest things I ever saw a band do, because that would have been super disheartening.

I really wish more musicians (and people in general) were as open-minded as you. You hit the nail on the head when you said (and I'm paraphasing) "I'm not going to listen to this band, but you have to admit it demands an amount of appreciation".
You would be amazed at how many times I've tried to expose people to extreme metal only to have them dismiss it as "just noise" or having "no feel". They can't even admit that what I'm showing them requires an insane amount of skill and it infuriates me to no end lol. You obviously understand that musicians from different genres write music for a multitude of reasons and they all aim to evoke different kinds of emotions/feelings. Anyway, thanks again for going into all of these reaction videos with an open mind and sharing your thoughts. You have earned yourself a new subscriber, sir.

John Longstreth is a different breed of drummer. I'm not very familiar with the genre, but I only know two other drummers who play this kind of insane sht and still look like they're putting together a grocery list in their mind, just effortless - that would be Austin Archey and Lyle Cooper. These guys obviously practiced for *all* the hours.

I love the respect you give to the metal!! Here’s a little secret... A lot of these bands, their song structures (like the video you did for Gene Hogland), it’s basically jazz with different settings. Growls for vocals, guitars are super distorted, but the drumming of players like this guy, Hellhammer (of the band Mayhem), Trym of Emperor, Frost of Satyricon, Steve Ashiem of Deicide, those bells, crashes and ride flicks are just the best!!! I like that you see that and know how much talent and dedication it takes. I was in a black metal band, and we had a jazz drummer and it made so many things so interesting while playing that extreme style of music. All these heavier styles have no code when it comes to song structure.

Fantastic.! I love how drummers can drum with our mouths. It's part of the package. John is as percise as it gets. I can remember how much people would stop and EXTREME listen to double bass back in the day. Early 90's. Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal, Obituary(much slower, with Groove.!) just to name a few of the obvious. Those drummers were my reason for living man.! No TH-cam back then. Had to go to school, or figure that sh_t out for yourself. Pantera's Far beyond driven, was the album that changed me forever. Sounds so pure and powerful. Put feet on a new level (and difficulty) for many I'm sure. Becoming is a song that hit me in the heart.

Origin is not for everyone. They push their ballistic speed for so long that most of the listeners don't make that far, to the parts when finally the groove kicks in, and when the Origin's groove kicks in, there is nothing out there like that, even between a million of tech-death bands.

The funny thing is that when you play at those speeds and rehearse it a few weeks. it's pretty much muscle memory. you don't have to think at all. You don't make mistakes because your brain does not have time to make mistakes. It's hard to describe the feeling. The thing with playing around with the cymbals. It sounds jazzy but for me it was just a way to help keep the time in my head and that too became mechanic and just a means to an end to help keep the tempo up.

There's a band i really want you to check out for the drums! ! ... Beecher ... I couldn't find a drum video for this band. But there are blasts, odd time signatures and plenty of delicate cymbal work. And the recording style is incredible. Again a UK band, best of hardcore! ... 'Beecher'!!! .. 'breaking the fourth wall' is their killer album. I know you'll appreciate them. Love!!!

Meinl Cymbals - John Longstreth - "Invariance Under Transformation"
    CYMBALS CYMBALS CYMBALS!!!
And you get a very decent high frame rate video with it.
And him giving an overview of his cymbals at the end of the video.

The thing is , in that video you cant hear his foot work wich Is awesome , and second the original versión of the song was recorded by James King who is another monster , but I liked the face you put when you saw IT, its the same face that all drummer experience when they see John!!!

Thing that gets me is how do they write and construct the "tunes"??
I imagine them sitting around at rehearsals in someone's basement somewhere, the leader puts the bong down and says "I've got an idea for a song...."
From then on.... I'm fucken lost.
The time and repetition it must take just to get one down pat and in the memory bank for the stage has to be mind blowing.

I've been a metal fan and guitarist for over 20 years and have always loved the use of cymbals in metal but never really thought to think of why until you broke it down here. Thanks! Also, react to anything by Dan Presland from Ne Obvliviscaris.

I'm not really a fan of this music, but have seen this monster eveloped in 15 years into this, he has become the king of the hill. His technic with the hands and feet( heeltoe) is flawless! Greetings from sweden

Pleeeeease do more John Longstreth. He has a video recorded professionally for sickdrummer magazine, so you can see everything much clearer. One of them is called Truthslayer.

Might be interesting to investigate James Dewees drumming in Coalesce. I've always thought it somewhat unorthodox. Jason Roeder from Neurosis is definitely worth a listen too - v tasteful, lots of groove and triplets.

one of the pioneers in EXTREM DRUMMING is george kollias of NILE.
check him out, he does this stuff since aeons.
origin is pretty rough btw, they all spam so hard their instruments are basically quadruple cluster f**ked. if that makes any sense

Man it might be too extreme as well but seeing the reaction to this I'm very interested to see what you'd make of Brad Fincher's [Devourment] double stroke blasts. At least there you'll also be able to talk about the grooves as well as chops. Their song "Choking on Bile" has some good examples of it.

I'm going to say it...This style is mostly finger technique, where the middle and ring fingers bounce the stick and give the drummer the speed John is demonstrating. That in and of itself is an amazing way to play. It gives you more control for blast beats, etc. Think about how Tony Williams played with Miles in the 60's....imagine if he used matched grip and finger technique!!

this was like my favorite album ever for a minute. I think I left it in my cd player for like 4 years at one point and listened to it everyday in my old truck. the original drummer for the album is actually the guy from unmerciful now, but john longstreth was in origin first and hes definitely the better drummer
