Dude, ive rewatched this so many times.. yet over the years im STILL amazed that he just one-ups himself by playing it faster than the record.. what a fucking king..
the combination speed, power, grace, and tastefulness in his playing is absolutely unmatched. Look at him, incorporating all those cymbal accents while constantly blasting, without even breaking a sweat. That hand technique of his is just so simple but so effective, it's just elegant.
You simply can't put into words how fucking great Longstreth is, you just have to show people and spread the word. This is death metal drumming at its finest. His stamina must come from some brutal alien planet.
Damn..(not recalling who Jamie is for)nice to know im not alone in this sentiment. Those others are/have been my favs/held in highest regard as well. Cheers man! You know whats up.
I love the ride and crash accents he does while blasting, many syncopated - this whole video is seriously advanced shit. the way he incorporates both hands into the snare hits in his blasts...I've said before, I'll say it again: John is a one-man drumline.
John is the only drummer at this level that I know that goes flying finger and wrist technique at same fucking time. Mostly I envy his serenity while playing.
Absolutely boggles the mind. The amount of creativity in his playing and having the ability to actually perform like that is just insane. He's in a category of his own.
4:50, that rim shot. I've watched this a thousand times and it fucking blows my mind that at this pace and intensity he can throw subtleties like that in there left right and center. Complete master.
See Longstreth has like a controlled fury about his playing. Very primal but super logical if that makes sense. He's a true master whatever you think of technique, he's mastered a style that's really unique and technical with a lot of underlying groove.
It's just such a pleasure to watch him play. Sure, there's drummers who can play as fast and technical, but few can put groove, freshness, and musicality into extreme metal like John.
I keep coming back to this. I can't think of any other drummer in death metal that incorporates so much artfulness (accents, ghost notes, etc) and groove with brutality. John has said he would have been a jazz drummer but it wasn't athletic enough. Proof right here.
I've watched this video multiple times daily just absorbing his technique, this guy is an unbelievable machine and you can learn just by watching him make it look easy
Exactly, you can see how he just takes full advantage of the rebound and doesn't hit very hard, but very consistant, only making powerfull rimshots at the last stroke before a full stop. I think most drummers will understand how he's doing this (playing like this and this fast), just by looking at his playing, but actually doing it is so very difficult. This guy doesn't seize to amaze me.
Is impressive the precisión in hes left hand and how loud the blast sounds, of all death metal drummer, John is the most technical and precise of all , amaizing!!!!
This ferocious, unforgiving, relentless velocity of power is the exact reason why I stay far away from push-pull. John Longstreth is and always will be KING. No one touches this, but Sacred Longstreth.
@@joericaluwaerts5474 people who teach others how to do it do it wrong. Look up gravity blast tutorial and see how many people do it wrong. To clarify, look at the forearm muscle by the biceps of theirs. Activation of that is not ergonomically correct
He's not a machine! A human like the rest of us. A prime example of dedication and hard work, the culmination of years of practice, how to incorporate many advanced techniques (double strokes, Moeller, etc. etc.) into a whole drummer, with feel and creativity. No machine could do this.
+Tobias Röhner I didn't know it wasn't JL on that track - I'm usually pretty good at checking 'the facts' before I comment! Oh well, you live and learn. Respect for Longstreth and now also respect for King.
The first Origin line up with George Fluke, Clint Applehanz & Mark Manning are still the heaviest most raw live shows I've ever witnessed. They barely move around now. Back then the guys were all over the stage & moved & thrashed around with the music the entire show. It was fucking insane.
This staring from the abyss version is much f**** faster than on the record. Lovely sound too! P.S: I need that version on a special album, it's that good.
Way faster than Kollias, you gotta be kidding man. Kollias' footwork is still far superior to Jon's. The only thing Jon does in fact play faster is the Gravity Blast, which is actually never used by Kollias ;)
Luke Cook Please. listen to that ride, johns a thick dude you don't think his hits have power? I know when I play that speed I use mainly finger strength and minimal hand movement, george throws the mueller technique into his blast which makes his hands and wrists move more and gives him an almost accented blast. Origins songs average faster speed than nile songs, john is a fuckin beast and his technique is much more fluent than Kollias. Kollias was my favorite drummer, I have his damn band tattoo'd on my body but john is just better lol much more of a broad musical background
SkateSmokeAndDrum yeah also look at merat of ulcerate he just hit as hard with tremendous complex stuff...kollias is just plain boring i mean same fills.zero dynamics man he seems dying with simple blast beats ...this requires a lot more thought that what it seems
Through some of that he looked like if you passed him the TV remote he could channel flick with 1 hand & carry on playing with the other without being distracted.
5 years later and I still occasionally come back to this video just to have my mind blown again.
I’m back right now for that same reason brotha.
Just the first 3 minutes are absolutely brain-melting!

I know right!?
согласен. это на грани фантастики..

I love how both hands are dominant when he blasts. Both sound like the same hand. There is no weakness, very consistent.
Playing the songs faster than they are on the record. Mindblowing....
Dude, ive rewatched this so many times.. yet over the years im STILL amazed that he just one-ups himself by playing it faster than the record.. what a fucking king..
I just watched the drum talk video he did, in which he said something like "stick to the basics ...singel foot blasts at 260bpm" XD
I notice that Origin and Cattle Decap play their songs faster live than on record
I love how his tom mics are head banging along to his drumming
Beneath all that superfast blasting is just a ton of taste, groove and subtle suggestion going on. what an awesome player!
I did see John doing both shows with Origin and Gorguts. 2 shows same evening how the fuck he can remember all both set??? What a beast !!!
I seen a skinless / origin show where he played drums for both and it was fucking amazing . Also the most violent show I've ever been to
Whaaaa???
Is it real?!

the stamina he has is unreal, he can play this fast for a solid hour, also he has a beautiful fills taste and touch, a real musician
I think Jan Benkwitz aka Blastphemer is also fucking great with the flying finger and wrist technique.
What has Jan been up to? It's been years since I've heard about any of his work.
I talked to him about 3-4 months ago and he said that he didn´t had a basement to practice at the moment....:(

It's effortless and quite beautiful. What a drummer. One of my all time fave tracks has got to be The Burner. The drumming on that sounds inhuman.
Brought to you by James King. He's kind of forgotten but the drumming he pulled off on Echoes is pretty mindblowing.

And the bastard had been playing drums then for less than 2 years! He's an all around musical talent.
This was already crazy but I think in 6:25 he losts signal in his in-ear monitors and he just takes the plug off and continues flawlessly.
Joona Virtanen I think he just scratched his head (which is hilarious in its own way). His in ear is still in. He did it already at 6:06
Yeah buddy, that didn't happen. He just lost the tempo for a sec, that's it.
Funny how this insane relentlessness is what keeps me away from listenening to more of this music but makes me admire it at the same time.
The best video on youtube so far
theres been alot of talk about John lightly tapping etc.. but man, theres power behind it in this vid thats for sure.
