    The almost unlimited articulation of the front and rear axles is what makes them so good, especially on rough terrain. Every wheel gets maximum traction, regardless of terrain.

    We had coots years ago. They are way cool. What we figured would make them much improved was a double enveloping worm drive. It would allow lots of horse power and the gears would never break. Another thing we looked for was a way to have differential drive which would improve steering and drive ability
    The COOTII was a hydrostatic ally driven Coot which was way improved by really loud and expensive.
    Good luck and have fun

      I’ve been looking for an affordable Coot 2 but they are not easy to find. I am working on a few things to hopefully make the steering easier, especially on the 4ws coot.

    Lethal to the state of Montana energy department we actually went back on a demonstration way back up in the Tetons with a transformer because they didn't have any vehicle that could make it in the winter. We drove back there with them to install a transformer farmers bought them to use on farms. They were also heavily used for hunting, especially amphibious. People didn't really do much of recreation if they did it was snowmobiles in the winter Honda hadn't even come out with their three wheel yet. We also sold the coot six wheeler with a steering wheel that would seat 41 driver three occupants in the backseat. It used the very same motor 12 hp to Tecumseh motor for the 1 gallon gas tank. The body was made of 16 gauge steel. It weighed a half a ton guaranteed to carry a halftime of cargo upper 70% grade in 1969. They came out with a PTO you could put on the back. They have a propeller on with wider tires and four wheel steering with rollbars brush, guard different things started coming out for extras, including a canvas snap on that would work off the top of the rollbars forward, facing round lamps and back facing with the option of installing one additional one gallon gas tank on the opposite side in low range was 16 to 1 gear ratio with the military standard jeep tires, which it was shipped with you could drive it up into the back of a full-size pick up med truck and close the tailgate. It was designed specifically for that. Lotta people don't know this.

    I had the AWS for decades and sold it and shipped to buyer in Hawaii in 2017. My friend had one too and he put a 38 hp motor in, put in CV joints and locking hubs. Made it easy to push and turn when not running.

      Wow 38 hp wow. I think that’s the most I’ve heard of in a coot. The cvs would be really nice. Probably a lot of fabrication involved in that swap.

      I might just try that. The tires were like that when I bought it. Not too difficult to switch around. I see some coots come up for sale on the "Coot/Croco 4x4 ATV Enthusiast" Facebook page and also Facebook Marketplace from time to time.

    • @mwilliamshs

      No reason to switch tread direction with the propeller. Tires contribute minimal propulsion vs the prop and traction is reduced considerably when reversed although they do self-clean better.

    Thanks for the video I just got a 124SS project - was full of crap and leaves and looked real bad - $200 and the std. engine is still perfect (was out and just has to be bolted in - I need to replace a tire so will do all 4 - what tires do you have - do you like them? and are those still the standard rims?

    • @FilthyKnobsOffRoad
      @FilthyKnobsOffRoad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet deal! The tires I have I believe are Goodyear flotation tires. They are great. The coot is so light I can run extremely low psi without the tires coming off the rims. They get great traction for crawling and they really help with floating the coot in comparison to the narrow tires. I have 3 coots and I would put them on all of them. The one negative I would say is that they do make the normally difficult steering of the coot even worse. I plan to install electric power steering at some point to help with that. If you drive the coot a lot your forearms would be bigger than your calfs lol.

    • @FilthyKnobsOffRoad
      @FilthyKnobsOffRoad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also I am not sure if the rims are standard with some coot models but they are definitely wider than the rims on my other two coots. I have seen these wheels on many different coots but don’t know what they are called. Mine had them on it when I got it. I can’t recall the bolt pattern but I know a handful of automotive wheels fit on the coot. You could get some wider rims with a deep offset for pretty cheap.

    • @usaroseinc
      @usaroseinc ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks the rim hole pattern on a COOT is 5 on 112 also known as 5-112. I had it measured at a tire shop today. Please can you tell me the actual tire size on your tire - they look so cool - and I will find rims to suit. as space is an issue - I have a wide Felling trailer and at best I have about 1/16 of an inch to spare when transporting my COOT - so I am looking for a set of 5-112 donut/spare tires to trailer/working on it in the shop. It seems like it is a fairly common spare/donut - audi/VW and others use same. Thanks again.

    From personal experience, I learned at an early age that fiberglass leak repairs on metal hulls that come into contact with many hard objects like crossing over trees, tree tops and the center ridges of rutted roads 90% or more sun baked Mississippi Buckshot mud(hard a concrete in a dry July and August and slicker than two worms fornicating in a jar of Vaseline when rained on) that a Terra Jet does take long to sink even with a small leak, faster than you can swim a hundred or so yard. And, you don’t want to enter an ancient woods slough during low water without a well thought out exit plan, especially where cypress knees are present as the hundreds of years of dead and decaying vegetation provides no tire engagement traction but sufficient hull resistance to keep you from climbing out of said slough quick enough to not get water up onto your CVT drive belt and things go downhill from there.

    • @FilthyKnobsOffRoad
      @FilthyKnobsOffRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a unique way with word lol. I have gotten in some bad situations in that thing. It doesn’t take long for things to go bad. It does slowly take on water from a few different areas.

    Trolling motor would be easy enough to mount, and could tilt out for on land, if you can't find the sealed bearing for the propeller shaft. It might even be a better alternative, because it wouldn't stick out to catch on anything.

      He used two trolling motors with separate controls for each, set on the rear corners. Works well in the water, but I think I'd want them to be able to tilt up for clearance overl land. I've seen his channel before and thought it pretty good, but I never knew he had a Coot.
