    Montoya was a very talented open wheel driver. Whether it be in F1 or Indycar he consistently ran up front and won races. He was one of the most talented open wheel drivers ever. And he was part of the open wheel drivers to NASCAR craze in the late 2000’s. He was great on road courses as to be expected. When it came to everything else though he was very lackluster. He consistently got outran by his teammate Jamie McMurray on most race weekends. Certainly one of the best open wheel drivers who couldn’t transfer that talent over to NASCAR.

      I actually think Montoya made the transition over to stock cars pretty well. And he came close of winning so many races which he ultimately didn’t win.. Talladega 2008 (fall), Brickyard 400 in 09 & 10, NHMS 2009, Atlanta 2010, Pocono 2010, Richmond 2013 and Dover 2013.

    JPM is underappreciated for sure. its sad his nascar career is resulted in meme-ry with his crash at daytona that wasn't of his own doing. What he was able to do with that team and car in the cup series is still impressive.

    It's a shame this guy's legacy in NASCAR is going to be best remembered as hitting the jet dryer. Montoya and Robby Gordon are imo two of the most underrated drivers in terms of their ability to get into anything with a motor and be competitive in it. Robby's problem was all mental, he constantly got into his own head and beat himself.

    I've always thought that JPM was one of the best all-around drivers ever. I'm talking on the level with the likes of Foyt and Andretti. What I took issue with was the overhype that followed him in the NASCAR Cup Series. On road courses it was pretty much a no-brainer he'd be up front and winning races, or at least contending. On ovals he didn't have the racecraft, I'm sorry to those who disagree.
    Oval racing is, for obvious reasons, a different beast than "course" racing. And therefore the way you race an oval is different than the way you race a course. JPM has always had an aggressive style of driving, and it's served him well over the years, especially in anything open-wheeled. But on an oval, the closing speed is different than on a course.
    Getting a great exit on a road course can net you almost 3-5 tenths of a second, setting you up to make a strong move for position down the next straight or into the next corner. A great exit on an oval MIGHT net you 1 tenth. And the next corner is so close, that advantage can easily be lost.
    This usually carried over into road course racing in NASCAR, with even aggressive drivers biding their time to make a move (well... except for Robby Gordon). AJ Almendinger is a prime example of how to race both types of track in NASCAR, with multiple wins on ovals AND road courses. Juan just... didn't have the patience.
    Again, one of the greatest race drivers I've ever had the privilege of watching. But a mediocre-at-best NASCAR entry. Although he did take Ganassi equipment and push it further than most mediocre drivers would be able to. Because he's JPM, one of the greatest race drivers ever.

    I think he's one of the best racecar drivers of all-time. No matter what it was, he won with it. Same goes for Robby Gordon and Mario Andretti. Montoya should've had a couple of oval wins in NASCAR too but he choked them away.

  • @plisskenationbackfromthede3657
    @plisskenationbackfromthede3657 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Andretti comparison is a little bit of a stretch but not too far tbh. The man won in pretty much everything he ever raced. Still was killin it in imsa as an "old man" lol. And hes coming back to imsa next year with dragonspeed. Hell he beat guys like schumacher, raikkonen and alonso in their prime in f1. He should be much more revered imo.

    Some Pablo Montoya should have two more wins to his Nascar cup career
    Mainly because he was the class of the field at Indy for two straight years
    No one could touch that man don't want to get close enough to touch that man
    You seemed like something always went wrong there's probably a random race that he should have won that he didn't other than them to Indy races
    I really can't speak to his career in other Motorsports I didn't I didn't really get the watching much when I was younger
    He is extremely talented and he can still will race car

    Unpopular opinion put him in a hendrick or shr car and he would have more than 2 wins and maybe even a championship considering his equipment he outperformed all the time

    • @leonardofabbri7930
      @leonardofabbri7930 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why unpopular? Only cause bunch of diehard native Nascar fanatics were more fond of traditional names of the series and they looked at him with no half ways, prejudice/excessive expectations due to his pedigree. Ganassi is known to excel and have a tradition as CART/indycar team (I also remember the wins at 24 hours of Daytona), but never had a strong package in NASCAR (I followed those years, I dunno these days how it goes).
      I remember one year Juan was in the Chase (can't remember if it was 2008 or 2009).
      The worst year was 2013 and as far as I can remember he had some changes in team personnel that didn't work. However in his stint he took two wins (Sonoma, Watkins Glen), marked some poles and had several top 5/10 finishes.
      Those years Hornish, Jacques Villeneuve, Dario Franchitti, Danica Patrick (whatever your opinion of her as a driver) tried the transition from open wheel formulas to such a specific series with a close field and showed how it wasn't easy.

      @@leonardofabbri7930 the man is no doubt one of the greatest overall drivers of all time he is in my opinion up with Andretti and Unser on people who win in whatever he drives and no doubt one of the most successful open wheel guys to switch to nascar but the lack of equipment from ganassi hurt him I still believe from reaching full potential as a NASCAR driver and 2013 the biggest thing I remember from him that’s season is the Dover race he should have won

      Best race car driver of his era? Not even close.
      I mean guys like Schumacher, Hakkinen, Alonso, Raikkonen in F1, and NASCAR drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Smoke, JJ etc were all far better than what Montoya ever was in either F1 or NASCAR. However, Montoya is probably the best/most talented Indycar driver of the last 20-25 years or so. It was in where he truly made his mark.
      But i can agree that his career overall is pretty impressive, he has certainly proved himself to be a very versatile race car driver.

    For The Equipment He Was Running With , He Did Pretty Good , Unfortunately Jamie Mc. Outrun Ran Him For JPM's Last 4 Years In CGR's 42 Car. (Also BTW 2009 Was JPM's Best Season In NASCAR)

    Obviously talented, tho not great in a stock car. There's many guys who win other places but can't "get it" in a stock car. He's high on the list of anyone that has come from another series. Also worth noting he's vindictive and extremely petty. Wrecking guys intentionally, costing them championships on more than one occasion. So as a sports car racing fan I don't think much of him, but the talent can't be denied.
