    I’ve been in the car business for the last 24 years and I often work on old cars that have been sitting years in the Las Vegas desert. The gasoline that gets baked on the inside of a tank becomes like tar in this desert heat, and I have tried everything in the past to get that stuff off; paint thinner, ethyl alcohol methyl alcohol, xylene, oven cleaner, acetone, diesel, gas, every kind of water based cleaner you can imagine, CLR, Transmission fluid, all kinds of acids, naval jelly, paint strippers of all kinds and the only thing that sort of worked was REAL MEK. After watching this video, I went to Home Depot and got some sodium hydroxide mixed with potassium hydroxide in liquid form since that was the only alternative I had, there was no pure sodium hydroxide. I took some of the scrapings from the bottom of one tank we have been working on for weeks and put it in an empty plastic bottle and then poured some of the solution in with it, and it immediately started to fizz and dissolve the crud. I’ve never seen anything work like that. Poured some ~1/4 bottle, in the gas tank and will let it sit overnight. I’ll come back with an update.

      @@Pbcotter left the drain cleaner in one tank for two days and it was sparkling clean. It will not dissolve sand or metal particles, but it will take off all the ugly old gooey gas. Once I had that out, we just flushed the tank with water to rinse out all the particles that didn’t dissolve. It worked better than anything I’ve ever tried. MEK is decent, but the drain cleaner is the best thing I found. You have to be cautious though, because not all drain cleaners have sodium hydroxide, and or potassium hydroxide. So make sure you don’t buy one that has some other kind of chemical in it, at least if you wanna get the results I did.

    Great info on the chemicals...I will use that in the future. I have a BB (.177) carton I keep handy just for tank cleaning... Pour them in the tank and shake it like crazy...the round BBs do a great job at breaking up the funk without damaging the tank...do a gross decon and you can reuse them.

    That's a great tip. Thanks for going though all the products that didn't work so we can move ahead and use the correct chemical. I still haven't heard back from the seller of the Texaco pull knobs. I'll let you know when I do.

    soft metal tanks like aluminum or even galvanized tanks caustic should be avoided. steel is fine. However any brass fittings or soft metal fittings caustic will attack. make sure all the fittings including the weld is steel. The way to do this is a tiny spot test. if you notice discoloration or slight fizzing wash off immediately.

    When you were done you should have rinsed the tank with warm water and baking soda to neutralize the acid PH

      Sodium hydroxide isn’t an acid its a strong base.

    I had a metal tank so used Xylene. Worked well. I'll try lye, if I have to clean a plastic tank. Thanks.

      wholeNwon drain cleaner is good for iron pipes so I'd assume it would be good for an iron tank. just dont use it on an aluminum tank or you'll have a really bad day.

    Never use caustic soda on galve aluminum gas tanks for sodium hydroxide reacts with aluminum fittings and produces hydrogen gas. Caustic or drano is not good for all tanks only if they are steel

      so your saying it's OK to use on my steel fuel tank ?

    • @Ecksterphono
      @Ecksterphono 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is as long as there's no soft metal fittings on the tank.

    Hey thanks for the informative video.. I have a Honda cb360 fuel tank and the fuel has been sitting in it for about 30 years...I tried apple cider vinegar and it worked to and extent...I tried electrolysis and it to worked to and extent...I will try drano and see if it will work. I was just wondering if it would be okay to use n the metal tank ?

    • @Parlusk
      @Parlusk  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JOGO I am not sure about using this method on a metal tank, sodium hydroxide is very corrosive. I would google it and do some research before trying it...

    • @billbucktube
      @billbucktube 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if the tank is aluminum. Think of the shiny aluminum chunks in drano. They generate heat to loosen fat globs. An aluminum tank would heat up as it dissolved.

      Most municipalities have a HAZMAT collection center or at the very least a day once or twice a year in which they allow residents to dispose of HAZMAT at their facility. The municipality the properly disposes it.
