    This didn't go well for me. Not recommended on random neighborhood cats.

      I know this is an old comment, but I think when said random neighborhood cat doesn't know you/ you don't know it very well, it can be super startling! Cats are always pretty on-edge. Also, I generally don't recommend putting a sweater on a cat you don't know because it might be someone else's and when kitty returns home with a sock on her, your neighbors are gonna have questions! Lol

      Lizãrd Agreed. Random neighborhood cats probably won't like cat sock sweaters. They tend to have their own style of cat scratch skin with tufts of fir chewed out.

      My cats are on the bigger side. I use pants legs from leggings that no longer fit, or have a rip, etc. My cats are 12 lbs and 14 lbs and a pair of my M sized leggings make 2 cat shirts.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have a cat who must wear a sweater every day, to help calm her anxiety. The clothing available in stores is badly made, expensive, and covered in sayings about dogs. I have a few socks that I think are attractive enough to be her newest wardrobe additions.

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      allysther you are very welcome. I'm so glad this vid helped you. Cats can need sweaters for all sorts of reasons. We had a persian kitty named Coco ( we miss you, Coco!) who needed to have her hair shaved once every 2 months or so (her hair would get tangled, or she occasionally developed a skin disease, or it was just too hot in the daytime) and she needed a sweater at night or if the weather turned cool and rainy. She really loved to wear a sweater!

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +molkkang Aww, maybe you can try getting her used to it little by little by having her wear it 5 minutes at a time, then progressively longer? Like once a day over a few days? I have done this with some cats who were frightened of clothes at first. Some never adjusted to wearing clothes, but others did. :)

    For bigger cats you can cut the arm off an old sweater / sweatshirt, or the lower leg part of a legging!. I always do this for my cats when I apply topical flea treatment to the neck, so they don't lick it off each other.

      ❤️ so happy to read this, Lydia! So nice to have your feedback. I've used this many times after my cats have had a procedure or a wound they wouldn't stop licking. Sometimes I apply a little ointment to an oozy wound (i usually use extra virgin coconut oil) and this keeps the wound from sticking to the sock and making matters worse.

    I just did this with a leg warmer for my kitty. She is always sitting by the woodstove or under blankets so I though she would like some extra warmth to take with her. She liked it at first and then started trying to remove it. I think after a few days of acclimatizing she will really love it. I'll get some large socks too to see if that works better for her.
    Also she didn't mind me putting it on I just held the way I normally do and slipped it over her head.

    • @HelpingHandHowto

      Thank you for the feedback, Leah! Aren't you lucky that she didn't mind getting dressed :) I am making a whole bunch now for the colder weather we are having in Manila. As usual, some of our cats will love it, some will tolerate it, and some will immediately remove it. We always have to try anyway!

      Licodi888 i hope it works! if the wound is still oozing, please be sure to put something between the wound and the sock so the sock doesn't stick to wound: if you insert a small patch of plastic from a ziplock bag, or cellophane or wax paper, that might do the trick if you can find a way to keep it in place (maybe use a safety pin to pin the paper to the sock). :)

    A general rule of thumb for if it's too tight is to check if you can fit two fingers sideways underneath the sock. If you can't, it is probably too tight. Maybe try a larger sock.

      Larissa M Hi! Some cats really won't tolerate clothes. Sometimes i just keep putting the sweater back on no matter how many times a cat removes it (like when she/he is sick or has a wound and really needs it, otherwise i wouldn't insist)--and sometimes the cat gets tired/gets used to it and eventually just keeps it on for longer and longer periods. :) Please also read my answer to Fgsfds 1995 below.

    Thanks for this video , a stray kitten probably months old arrived at my house it never but it has to stay outside it does go inside sometimes though, but winter is coming up and it can get really cold sometimes here in Texas so I wanted to keep her warm because I'm still a kid and I love all animals but I'm more of a dog person ,so I don't know much about cats ,but since she is a kitty she doesn't have as much fur so I wanted to keep her warm just in case. I really appreciate it. Bye

    I appreciate this video because I have financial concerns. My cats go outdoors every day, and one of them wont wear a collar, so I was hoping if I gave him a sweater, people would know he is not a stray, plus I live in Wisconsin, and last year it went to 20 below zero pretty often. Thanks.

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jennifer Morris You are welcome! I really hope that works for your cats, of course, and am so happy to have helped. But, and this is just me, i would worry that the fabric might get caught on something and they might get trapped somewhere. Or that they might get wet somehow, and then feel colder still than they would without clothes. Or that, being clothed, my cats might attract unwanted attention from cruel pranksters. But--i'm quite paranoid about these things and have an overactive imagination. Plus we live in the tropics and never have to worry about 20 degrees below zero, ever. So i'm sure that whatever you decided for your cats will be best for them

    • @allysther
      @allysther 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jennifer Morris I agree with Helping Hand How-to about worrying about the sweater getting caught on something. Cat collars are made to break away easily for just this reason. One suggestion is to microchip your cat so that if it is found it will be scanned and you can be contacted. Most vets and shelters now have the scanners, and do what they can to return lost pets. In my area there are programs available that make the microchips affordable for most people. Best of luck to you and to your kitties!

      Fgsfds1995 Some cats can't bear them and struggle to remove them right away. Some are so disoriented that they can only walk backwards! I know that looser-fitting ones are better tolerated than the very snug. What can we do about it? We are only human(s) and we all know that we can't MAKE a cat do anything he/she doesn't want to do! :)

    Thank you for the video. I had never thought of this, but I will try it. One comment is that the poor Kitty looks terrified when she feels you coming from behind her. I dress my cat regularly and I like to show her the clothes and let her sniff it before I put it on her. I've been told that my Kitty is the exception to most cats because she allows me to dress her, but I think that when I show her the clothes she relaxes more. It's scary for them when we come from behind especially if there will be some struggle because the sock is tight. Just a thought.

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment, Brizaida, you're so lucky to have such an accommodating cat! I will definitely try your method next time and observe what happens :) Though my experience with my cats is that even those who tolerate the sock sweater well and appreciate the warmth--really hate the part where their head must go through that hole and irritate their whiskers!

    • @briribalta3698
      @briribalta3698 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Helping Hand How-to I agree putting it through their heads is the worse part. My experience with Bella is to stretch the clothe's opening for the head as much as I can and put her head through it as fast as possible. With the sock is a bit more challenging since it is so tight. I want to make a sock sweater for Bella, but she's a little chubby. Thanks for the video.

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elizabeth M it all depends on the preference of each cat. I know Blanca (in the video) loves her sweaters and prefers them very snug. If I make them too loose, she flops and falls and bites at them. Not all kittens/cats will tolerate a sweater, though-you need to watch and wait to see.
      You can gradually increase the length of time you keep the sweater on to help them adjust. Reassure them if they fret and fidget.

    I would like to make a couple of them for my neighbor’s cats because they are never home to care for them to keep them warm this Fall. Do you advice it for an outdoor cat?

    • @HelpingHandHowto
      @HelpingHandHowto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruth Ranieri I think it’s so kind of you to want to do this for your neighbors’ cats but-personally, I fear that outdoor cats might get the cloth snagged on something sharp, and then get stuck or choked. If they got wet, they might be unable to remove the sweater-and then they would be worse off than if they had nothing on.
