Had to do another alloytec rebuild for the wagon! | HFV6 LY7 VVT 190KW | GM Holden | LLT LFX

  • My recently first built Alloytec LY7 190kw engine lost oil pressure and died on the side of the road, we think the issue is related to an underlying issue due to rust in the bores more than build failure. Despite so many claims about timing chain problems and the famous P0008 fault code I have never had an issue with my original engine. 270,000km’s on original chains and tensioners and always serviced with diesel oil around 7-8,000kms. Late VZ Holden Commodores and some early VE Holden Commodores developed a known issue with the timing chain stretching causing issues and lately in the last half decade many have come to mention that the link isn’t necessarily the timing chains but lack of service or blocked PCV systems which cause low oil pressure and timing chains stretch, this wasn’t my case of failure but the reason why I had to do timing chains on my donor motor I got to replace and drop back into the Adventra.
    I also show the changing of the rear main seal and thermostat.
    This same LY7 HFV6 3.6 VVT engine was also used by GM in the 2007 Cadillac CTS, SRX and STS; Saturn Outlook; GMC Acadia and slated for the 2008 Buick Enclave and this alloytec engine also shares very similar properties to the LLT and LFX engines.

    Been using the Adventra for around 4 days now for general use around town locally and a trip to work on Monday which is all resulting in normal operation, oil level has been correct the whole time, power steering needed a bleed on the jack which we did and has been fine since. Oil pressure has been very close to what our other 2006 Adventra V6 reports. Did an oil filter change yesterday, looked good but did it anyway. This Friday will take it for a drive to gippsland on the main highway to give it a few hours cruising and see how we go. Looks good all signs point to the end of the v6 issues.
    FYI CORRECTION TO THIS VIDEO 17/NOV/22: I was at Hamish's place and we confirmed after this video fitting a May 06 LX6 set in an 05 LX6. The date code for ECUs is on the sticker in reverse (eg a 1st May 2006 ECU is labelled 06-05-01) but (just to add more confusion) there is some cross over in ECU dates as its only a programming difference so you really need to confirm the engine date of a donor car to be sure You can also go by VIN .... up to 6G*******6L859057 are the earlier type. You still need SX BCM for SX models but CX and LX sets are interchangeable in the Adventras. You cannot switch CAM SENSORS the entire loom is different on or around AUGUST 2006 LY7's which would be technically a MY06, anything before would be old design from the 05 Adventras.
    Working on PIG (our recent V8 Adventra purchase) it was running when we purchased it but back in June showed some issues with a squeaking noise from the engine, we assumed belts so we parked it away undercover for 4 month and after getting back to it we've now discovered its actually much worse you can follow this here in our first video here th-cam.com/video/gkpNvO7ugLg/w-d-xo.html and our recent video here th-cam.com/video/tbg24GwtDE8/w-d-xo.html

    That oil level issue could be a worry. Just keep a good eye on the level before your first few days use. Thanks for sharing

      Yeah we checked it this morning was dead on perfect. Physically it shows correct but computer reports oil level low, I wonder if it's reading the wrong sensor so waiting on my Tech2 to arrive so I can check what that thinks.

      @All Terrain Action I get the same thing with that scan tool, if you go out of camshaft actuator readings and go to engine 1 it shows normal reading, and I believe there's only one sensor in the sump like you said, so yeah there's no oil sensor in the cams are there?

    i remember when family members bought new ve's they all had the same issue oil consumption yet no leaks, holden told them all it was normal at that time the service yard was full with various low km vehicles with these motors ruined for whatever reason , i was going to buy one until i looked into the rebuild costs

      Clean PCV, if over 200k do timing chains. Engines are now cheap to find in perfect condition, minus timing chain. I've seen alloytecs with 400k on them on factory chains where oil pressure was maintained and good PCV maintenence. Crappy service intervals lead to lower pressure starting timing chain death cycle prematurley and often in the 150,000 to 300,000km age.

      @@AllTerrainAction i wonder how they faired in taxis , seen some engines in various taxis do a million even prius taxis did 900,000 on one engine which was surprising ofcourse the electric motor helped, my family members have been in the taxi industry and trucking industry since the 60's , my uncle retired recently his last taxi was a prius , ofcourse the electric ,
      ive rebuilt quite a few engines in nearly 40 years todays engines with vvt , dod and chinese made components that have a higher failure rate keeps you on your toes, in the USA i watched on their news its not just sensors ,pumps, solinoids that are produced in china now some engines perhaps the GMC SAIAC union has something to do with that , asia now their main market, amazingly i read years ago they produce over fifty million vehicles a year.
      im out in the sticks people dump here cars as scrap when i see a ve or later ill grab the engine out of interest i do that alot.

    Chris is it worth to drill out the breather holes to a 1/8 as am thinking to do that to mind as it's done 60.000 km since full rebuild as i have a very very slight leak at the left hand side rear bank as it could be the rocket cover too .

    • @AllTerrainAction
      @AllTerrainAction  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everyone says so, most say it was a revised fixed by GMH to do increase the hole sizes, the majority say yes to drilling them. I know someone who knows these engines, well who said his tried it but it it has the downside to return more oil back into the intake via PCV system. I've been told that if you clean the unit it every service the size it is at, is fine and less oil transfers from the engine to the intake system. Mine are still stock in my LX6 and the ones in my wife LX6 are drilled and over time this theory of oil use became very apparent on my wife LX6 in comparison to my LX6 so for this reason I've kept mine factory size. GMH did adjust the size in later alloytec models.

      We have hptuners & a license already for this vehicle, someone there who I can speak to get some help with getting some inside info on alterations we can make to the torque management to get little more out of the stock engine? Happy to pay, we just want to be able to make the alterations ourselves however in VCM. Any help appreciated. We are local in Frankston.

    Good evening mate quick question , how much hp could a ly7 stock handle ?

    • @AllTerrainAction
      @AllTerrainAction  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the concern would be in the 5l40e gearbox, I’ve heard of applications in the 300hp n/a but you need to be concerned for the max torque the box will maintain.

    Red coolant would of been better then just filling it with tap water.

    This is why the oil pan should be removed & the pickup screen checked :-

      Nothing's been wasted, anything we have we store and reuse if not for our own purpose but for someone else less fortunate. We offer a wide diversity of support to Adventra and Commodore owners.
