  • Returning to a place that I spent many hours at as a kid, we used to ride BMXs and climb trees here, but the best part of these woods was the pond that was home to Great Crested Newts, Palmate Newts and Frogs, sadly the pond has now dried up and there was no sign of Newts.

I no it very well after I lived there for 27 years, long time ago now, now live elsewhere since 1983, lots of fond memories on that common, beautiful in the summer, seen it in the winter when frozen over, had cold hands the other years with (-3C).

I lived in Hutton for the first 18 years of my life and I would often go there with my friends, we used spend so much time the catching frogs and newts. We would also spend hours climbing trees and riding our bikes in the woods. Now my parents have moved back to Brentwood its nice to visit again, a great place with great memories for me.

Some great reminiscences Ian, I have similar spaces though I fear most are now dual carriageways or housing estates. Loved it, Si.

Just a bit of info i found out, at 30 seconds, across the pond where the three white posts are is a short slip into the water. In "olden days" horse and carts used to go in there , through the pond and exit to the right, near the bench at Artichocke, Registry office end . It would clean the cart wheels off and cool the horses a bit.
I went to Brentwood County High and left in 84. Got married at the registry office and also played in the woods down to the railway. Biking in the hills. Fishing in the pond. Yup...
    Thanks for the memory jog.

Yes it was, but bitter sweet to see another local Great Crested Newt population gone. On the plus side it looks like Badgers have now moved in.
