I am lucky to be alive. My mechanic bought a Pilot belt tensioner made by Gates. I had it on the car only a month and it snapped in two. I lost my steering while I was going around a curve on a highway. By some miracle nobody died.
NOTE: Always check for interference before re-installing the washer. In some cases, the washer may not fit in the new pulley. If this is the case, it is not necessary to replace the washer. The pulley will “center up” automatically as the bolt is tightened. The bearing in the idler is already greased and sealed. Tighten the pulley bolt and reinstall the tensioner. No adjustment is required for belt tension. From gates. I’ve lost faith in gates water pumps but their accessory belt and associated parts seem to b high quality. Dayco belts won’t last longer then 3 years. Gates belts r definitely still the best. I’ll comment back if I have a bad experience on my j series
Looks like the pulley that is already installed on the other end of the tension should be the one to use the dust shield. Looks like they made a mistake and swap the pulley around . Always a good idea to compare the old oem part to the new aftermarket part before slapping everything together .
I needed to replace my tensioner, which is a Gates. I looked for a replacement and see that what is offered by Gate now is not the same as the Gates I removed from the engine. I bought a Dorman, which has a beefer arm than the new style Gates. In fact the Dorman is very similar to the old Gates. The Dorman has a lifetime warranty, the Gates is 1 year. And the Dorman cost a little less too. I suppose both are made in China, which normally means JUNK. However, with a lifetime warranty, at lease when it fails I'll get a replacement. Hopefully it will last 100,000 miles like the original Gates one did.
That sucks! Thankfully the Gates tensioner pulley I installed on our 99 Expedition yesterday fit fine without issue... FYI, some people simply replace the bearing on the pulley to save money. Sounds good for the separate pulley, but not with the tensioner with pulley.
Had the same problem. The thing is with headphones my left ear phone piece i could hear him talking with the music low and the right side I could only hear the music. Try that
Same. Kind of made me feel better about the hates auto tensioner I just bought. Wouldn’t really take this guys opinion to hear with such a crappy video.
Dayco is better they do a bit more product research and also check out Beck/Arnley, they actually source and archive OEM parts and then base their production off of the OEM part and actually install them to insure proper fit/function. A lot of Acura/Honda dealers now use Beck/Arnley parts for maintenance service replacement and/or selling Honda/Acura owners replacement parts over the counter from that brand because they've found them to be as good as OEM.
What would do best... Dayco... Continental... or ACDelco??? Im looking forward to replace timing kit on a pilot 2013.. belt.. tensioner.. pump.. pulley
The gates belt tensioners that I have tried on my 91 have rattled like crazy. It’s really bad when ac engages. It’s in the shop right now for some work and they asked if they could replace it. Same thing happened a few years ago there and it had only been in the car for a few months. I had put it on when I replaced the water pump. They were concerned about it then.
Ugh.. just installed a Gates tensioner for my 2005 Acura TSX. The tension indicator already shows its out of spec too loose. It's been 2 months (new belt with it). Now i have to pay for shipping back to them and shipping for the new one.. which is the price of the product. yeah thought Gates was good guess i thought wrong.
I dealt with this exact same issue. I actually had a very thin shim that fit behind it and I even filed the housing and the back of the new pulley and it clearance it just right. Total bs. Didn't get any noise after install, but after 18 months the bearing went bad.
Wow 18 months. I have now see 3 Gates water pumps go bad at the 60,000 mile mark, 2 of the 3 had bad bearings. Just use Gates for belts and hoses. NO ROTATING PARTS. I really wish they would get their act together but I have lost all confidence in them.
If we really want for aftermarket parts to be precisely engineered, then we must ask for car manufacturer approval to be mandatory, the same as for engine oil specifications. It should be "approved by" instead of "recommended for".
Your washer theory makes sense and the bearing location and that might be the reason having the airgap between the bearing and washer however it looks like your did not follow torque specs and that it was over tightened.
My gates tensioner for my tsx went bad within a month of installing it. I let it be and it made plenty of noise and now is completely gone. Never again.
DISCLAIMER: I have never used Dayco since I was such a Gates fanboy! I have talked to other shop owners that say they have never had a problem with them. So I would look at Amazon reviews about different Dayco tensioners and pulleys and see what is said about them.
I have used Dayco on several brands of vehicle. They do very well on Honda and Toyota and the belts last longer with less cracking. I have racked up more miles with no problem. Now on ford rangers Dayco belts for some reason sqeak after 5000 miles so I went with a Gates which is still going strong after 30,000 miles. For everything else stick with Dayco.
I need timing belt components (idler pulley and tensioner pulley) for a 94 Tercel, but I don't know one manufacturer from the other. Can you recommend which ones to buy or which ones to stay away from?
Is it possible that there was a mixup with the part, I know it comes as a "Kit", altho I have read that Gates is not the quality it once was. What's your thoughts on Aisin Timing Belt Kits?
Can I ask if it’s okay to just replace the auto tensioner (the part where you pull out the pin) temporary? My 2012 odyssey is making that loud ticking noise and has 85k miles on it. Of course I plan on doing a complete timing belt replacement in the near future.
Yes you could but depending on how you do it, you might lose tension on the belt and it might skip timing. If I may ask, why not just do the whole belt. Pick up a timing belt component kit from Aisin at Rockauto.com
BundysGarage hate that ticking sounds in the morning and this will be my first time doing a complete timing belt service. I’ve watched your videos and have the tools needed to get the job done. Just maybe more of the time it might take to complete it and little hesitate because the vehicle needs to be done without issues. Thank you for your input.
I just installed an Aisin timing belt kit. It was OEM on my 2007 Accord V6. Gates tensioner and water pump are much lower quality. I will never buy their timing belt or serpentine tensioner ever again.
I see your comments on other videos. You can’t go wrong with an Aisin water pump. It was OE for Honda Acura for a long time. Also one thing o have started doing was buying a timing belt kit minus the water pump from Gates and then pick up the WP from Honda.
Nope it was the right part. Gates use to be the $hit but I think their quality has gone downhill. I've seen 2 of their water pumps fail after 60,000 miles and now this with their tensioners. Growing up my dad swore by them and that's why I would use them, but no more. Now that everything is made in Mexico and China, quality has gone to crap. I will now only use Gates belts, nothing rotating!
BundysGarage as far as the dust shield, it often says on the package that it may not fit and that it’s not required. Looks like installer error/ignorance.
Gates changed the size of pulley for my tensioner __ not same size as the toyota one. F-ing aggravating ! I'm just gonna get my next one from the dealer.... oddly enough stupid "little " parts are semi affordable at toyota dealership. Another one is the pcv kit from NAPA fit like crap.... I said screw it and gotta good fitting one from Toyota dealership... the price only hurt a little.
Sad, I thought gates was still hi end parts. I saw the made in Taiwan on the box. These companies sacrificing quality so an investor can line his pockets. If your going to sell junk foreign stuff I'll just buy the exact same low quality stuff from Ebay. LISTEN UP GATES.
Exactly! Gates use to be the shit! My dad swore by Gates and I followed in his footsteps, but now I’m going to look elsewhere. I lost my dad in 2011, he would be rolling in his grave!
I would be really pissed off especially after installing it . Im also losing faith on gates did 99 toyota rv ok did subie sti ok but que pasa gates? I order gates kits from rockauto now Im abit leery dayco if not aisin
I am lucky to be alive. My mechanic bought a Pilot belt tensioner made by Gates. I had it on the car only a month and it snapped in two. I lost my steering while I was going around a curve on a highway. By some miracle nobody died.
Gates sucks bro!
Interesting , I usually use INA for all my bearings , pulleys and so on , thanks for sharing.
NOTE: Always check for interference before re-installing the washer. In some cases, the washer may not fit in the new pulley. If this is the case, it is not necessary to replace the washer. Watch this one about Gates belts: th-cam.com/video/4Ixk3o3ejsA/w-d-xo.html
The new pulley is not compatible with the washer therefore you do not use the washer. Just tighten the bolt.
Looks like the pulley that is already installed on the other end of the tension should be the one to use the dust shield. Looks like they made a mistake and swap the pulley around . Always a good idea to compare the old oem part to the new aftermarket part before slapping everything together .

This is the MAIN reason I go with OE/OEM when I can
It depends, sometimes OEM can be bad. eg Chrysler original parts are not really that good. Majority OEM is good, but not always.
I just stopped after 20 seconds because of that crap musinc in the background.
Had the same problem. The thing is with headphones my left ear phone piece i could hear him talking with the music low and the right side I could only hear the music. Try that

He made a small mistake, don't write him off.

@@MrJganan As far as an actual pulley goes or are you talking some other part like a belt?

Yeah change that piece of crap [gates] out!!!!
I use litens automotive tensioner pulley, good stuff, great explained 🤔
I'd be pissed. Thanks for the info

I use to install GATES water pumps but installed 3-4 of them with bearing noise. Pissed the hell out of me. Customer always complain
Gates is Junk! And their belts too.
I am sticking with the Dayco that came factory on my Toyota Corolla S.

Exactly right! Gates use to be the $hit! Not anymore for tensioners. Their belts and hoses are good but no more rotating parts.
I use Dayco in the TSX. No problems
Thanks for the heads up on Gates. They're not as good as they once were. Please tell us about Dayco brand of its any better

There's play, but if ur lucky, retight play slightly goes away

Senor bu dy gracias for heads up still waiting on 95 odyssey head at machine shop

At first look I already knew that pulley is wrong
Get a whole new set idler pulley+ belt tensioner. So that never it never be mismatched.
