In The Hunt (PS1) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Irem's 1995 shoot 'em up for the Sony PlayStation, In The Hunt.
Played through on the normal difficulty setting showing the best ending.
Is it just me, or does this seem like it was intended as some sort of undeclared follow-up to the NES submarine shoot-em-up, Sqoon?
Anyways, great port of a good arcade shooter. It's really quite impressive (especially for how early of a PS1 game this was) that it handles the sheer number of sprites on-screen at once without any apparent slowdown! It really is an awesome looking 2D title, so long as you don't mind the slow pace and a fairly light challenge. It wasn't designed with the same level of sadism of R-Type, so don't be too concerned. It's surprisingly easy for a 2D arcade shooter.
And if anyone thinks that it looks like Metal Slug, there's a good reason for that - the Irem development team that did this game moved on to form Nazca, the company responsible for the Metal Slug series on the Neo Geo. (On a related note, they also did Irem Skins Challenge on the SNES, which explains why that game is so similar to the Neo Geo Neo Turf Masters game).

So basically Metal Slug Underwater
+RedFlameFox Exactly
Basically.
Yea i know right
without irony, i mistook this game for a Metal Slug game.
You can't look past a single game and associate the one you're looking at to something different?
This game released by the infamous Irem: 1995
Metal Slug released: 1996
You've got it all arse up.
love how crazy and chaotic these old retro games got
I remember a similar submarine game, but it used 3D assets as 2D enemies. The submarine also had a big cartoony angry eye,I believe...
Metal slug submarine
It's one of the grandfathers to Metal Slug, the other is Gun Force II/Geo Storm. Same guys who did these, also did Metal Slug.
No, Metal Slug-marine.

Metal Slug Submarine or R-Type submarine?
The nostalgia is very strong in this one.
Apparently, IN THE HUNT was released in 1993 before Metal Slug (1996).
I don't understand why other people think this game copied Metal Slug wherein it seems to be the other way around.
According to speculation, SNK employees worked on In The Hunt
They didn't even copy it. Both titles are from the same devs
I used to play this masterpiece on sega saturn with my brother.. such a nostalgic moment right now watching this
The parents dream, listening to the kid playing this all day on the television..
An excellent port of the arcade 2D shmup and spiritual successor to Sqoon (the NES submarine shooter). It was also developed by the same team that did Metal Slug, and is the clear predecessor to the Neo Geo classic series. Pretty damned sweet, I must say!
+NintendoComplete amazingly that same Metal Slug is pretty epic action submarine shmups great thing game ever.
Speaking of Metal Slug, can you do a playthrough of any of the Metal Slug titles in the series someday?
Is the Saturn port significantly better??
This game is worth a lot, pretty rare.
A lot? I paid $10 about 2-3 years ago. Looks like resellers have killed the value on this one to the point of absurdity.
I wanted this game, I checked eBay. 166$ for a disc only, that seems fair... A Complete game for 271$... Well, I guess this TH-cam video will be all I see of this game.. That is for a PAL copy though, many of these games are insanely prized, I can pay some money for some select games I want, no problem, but there is a limit....
its not only rare, its a rare game thats good.
i actually chipped this game on my Xbox, the First Xbox
i was pretty young when the Xbox first came out but Mom chipped an SNES in the hunt game on my one.
@turntableterrorist Sweet. I will probably never own it.. :D Unless it reappears on Xbox etc. Or maybe an emulator, thinking about making an emulator with a lot of cool Arcade games, and maybe some of the expensive games that is more or less unobtainable.
But often when I play emulated games I do not get the same "feeling" or joy as I do when I play the real deal.
Especially the ones I actually knows from beforehand
Finally! Ive been telling folks about this game but nobody knew what I meant and I couldn't remember the name I'm glad to have finally found it. As I remembered that boss as it climbs up at you.
yes, that boss is very memorable, this game has no story nor drama nor emotions, but it really doesnt need those at all, its great on its own
First ps1 game my brothers ever got. The 3rd boss scared me so bad as a kid. Legit gave me nightmares. Love this game!
Stage 3 seabed ruins?
what was this thing again? It looks the liberty statue
This stage its looks like atlantis
that boss looks like something from God of War
That third stage was creepy. Giant man trying to swim up.
Holy shit I remember playing this when I was REALLY young on an old computer we got from a friend, this brings back so many memories
Oh my God I’m so thankful that you posted this. I have been trying to remember what game this is since I was a little kid and I played it at a friends house. Thank you.
In The Hunt: The Prequel Of Metal Slug
what a game and what a soundtrack! Here comes the nostalgia...
One of my favorite games from my childhood... Sir, you must have invincibility on
what's up with the third boss? Magic? Voodoo? just an Organic Statue?
9:56 my first "oh shit" moment
I only been watching for 2 minutes and im already sold
Last boss very giant nuke that throw bombs nukes at you this game was pure horror when i was kid i rember all except game name blood face statue of libertly hunting down my dreams
I have fond memories of playing this with my Dad when I was like 6 or 7. I always remember the train bit in the second level for some reason. Watching it back I realize I didn't remember it being that short because I was really bad at the game and rarely got past the 3rd or 4th level.
Also i am so glad Google was able to put this as number 1 result from '2D submarine shooter PS1' lol.
Hm... and PlayStation did these graphics without much slowdown or loading. Which is proof it was more than capable in terms of 2D rendering (in the right hands).
I guess thats why this game is sought after.
... I distinctly remember my brother renting this game from blockbuster... and stage 3 scaring the crap out of me when I was a kid 🤷🏽♂️🤣
Ahhh good old memories 😢
9:57 favorite level
Mine too
x2
20:46. That is one of the most amazing roars I've ever heard.
Imagine if they made it louder and longer.
i remember seeing this in the arcade. still pretty impressed today by how it looks.
i love is game
nostalgic is good..
level 3 boss scared the living shit out of me when i was a kid
N O S T A L G I A
That stage 3 boss battle. . . sheesh. Disturbing beyond words. In a good way.
Good job, Irem!
very good I remember this game on PS 1 era it's good until today good memories
Nostalgia game ever :)
Good old days.
Dude this is such a hidden gem.
One of my PS1 fav
Este juego era adrenalina pura
This game was intense as fuck lol bring back memories
My memorrriiiiies omg
This is my favourite game
I saw this game before but level 3 was level 7 and level 4 was actually the first level. I remember the original I saw made more sense in terms of how the levels merged into each other. btw I love both stage 3 and 4. 3 is just WOW and 4 has that horrifying apocalyptic effect of destroyed skyscrapers and raised sea levels.
They were literally preparing us for a blasting war in the future since we were little, this game is so stimulating.. my childhood is there lol, and what about that Jesus looks inspired big boss lol! Crazy stuff 😂
That's weird
I came here for nostalgia only to find out the game had a soundtrack. There was none in my copy. Only the sound effects. I guess the translation messed it up somehow.
Either way, that is a good run! Thanks for the nostalgia.
I dont understand why some in the hunt isos i downloaded doesnt have any music in every stage? Please reply i need a valid reason why :'/
+Keeyan V Probably a lot of sites sharing the same faulty copy. Try checking the cue file to make sure that it's actually indexing the audio tracks properly. If the cue is missing or incorrect, it'll totally screw the sound on games that use cd audio
NintendoComplete Thanks. Now I understand why xD
the third boss creep me the f out when i was a kid
Glad it was played with the original soundtrack, not a fan of the remixed music. Saturn version forces you to use just the remixed tunes, PS1 version gives you a choice. Saturn version is also picky, sometimes I've read it won't boot at all on the system.
+Bloodreign1 Me too, that's why I prefer this version :) I don't ever remember having that issue with booting on a Saturn though
NintendoComplete Might be restricted to the Japanese version. It's been a long time since I last heard someone mention about it.
Minha infância. Eu era viciado nesse jogo! Kkk
Played this many times, but with the name Metal Slug Submarine
Nice gameplay 👌
I called it metal slug: submarine when i was kid.
Power Play all the way! Xing
I can see how Metal Slug 3's SVX-17M Slug Mariner and the level segments that feature it pay direct homage to this game. Same Nazca team developed both this game and the Metal Slug series.
That game was a blast.
Can I get this on the PSN?
Damn. I use to have this brand new when it came out on PS1. Didn't play it much cause it was so difficult. Idk what ever happened to it. But I wish I still had it now 30 years later. Lol. It's too expensive for me to get now.
Finally, the real Metal Slug 3
wow, since i was kid until now i only stuck at there 22:30 lol, never play this game this game again since 2004's btw haha
Titan submarines should of got the specs for this little killer awesome sub!
Eu tbm cara
vendia no camelô como Metal Slug Submarine
Aqui a gente chamava de metal slug submarino kkk
no kidding when i was a kid and bootleg ps1 game was a at rise, it literally had a cover called metal slug submarine
Holy shit, this game looks beautiful and fun. is this game for any other systems?
Saturn and PS1, and the arcade original
And PS4
Playing it right now. At King Canane. The rock creature.
Eita que infância maravilhosa!!!
it's like super R Type, but more underwater :)
It's the precursor to Metal Slug, same group of guys who made this left Irem, formed Nazca, made Metal Slug, These guys also did GunForce II/Geo Storm for Irem, it too is awesome.
RIP Irem, you cool bastards.
esta muy bueno
It appears to be quite a bit faster than on my arcade cabinet. I guess it has to do with the "rapid mode" turned on 0:53
I’m interested in this game, due to that ominous colossal ancient giant.
This game should’ve been ported to the Sega Megadrive/Genesis back in 1994/95.
I doubt the Genesis' processors could handle such a graphics-heavy game.
This remind me of my chilhood
Saturn version is probably the best due to its advantage on 2D games.
I've actually heard that the Saturn version isn't optimized well due to its programming difficulty so there's alot of frame rate drops.
Yeah, if memory serves, the PS1 port was quite a better than the Saturn one. Guess someone was lazy with the Saturn port, since on that hardware it could've been arcade perfect.
You'd be incorrect, the PS1 version surprisingly is the better port this time. You can inout a code for less, or more slowdown, and you aren't restricted to just remixed music. Plus no boot up problems with this game, which can't be said for the Saturn version due to some really stupid bug that requires you to boot the game first with no controllers plugged in, then put the controllers in after it boots.
10:06 predicting metal slug xx 4th boss
Am I the only one noticing the popping in the soundtrack in the title sting and the PS1-exclusive soundtrack?
Whether this game is either Metal Slug or R-Type in Underwater, since the Submarine was playable in R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate.
And they gave a name to it as Granvia F, you can also count the blue submarine as Granvia M, with the DLCs that they made for the game
Long time tha game
Tha game was in
Google play but is not
There any more
oww u r awesome... im just 4 level and die... :(
Never seen this game before but I can dig it and it looks challenging as fuck.
ShadowWarrior42 It totally is. But then again, it's from the folks that made R Type, so that should tell you something
Tava procurando o neme desse jogo faz tempo
Channel Name: NintendoComplete
Gameplay: PS1
Nintendo: I'm joke to you?
Before i don't buy Hotline Miami.....this game first i am playing
Oh sit such a good game
Fun fact: This was the inspiration for metal slug.
That Seabed Ruins Boss make me can't sleep 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 wtf is that meat covered with stone
I still whistle the kokopeli song to this day
