One thing to factor in about missing a Top 6 Forward, 3 of our D are offensively gifted. We have a Dougie bomb again! Luke & Nemec can both SKATE and since they'll be playing less minutes this season they should both be FLYING. I'm sure their offensive game will grow under Keefe too. You can look at each line like there's an Offensive D and a Defensive D pairing. That's a luxury most teams don't have! They are still young and either one could go through a sophomore slump this season... But if they only get better we will be more than fine without making a blockbuster trade. Ottawa won't be trading their captain until they absolutely have to. By all means if they aren't in the playoff race, Ullmark refuses to sign an extension and they are forced to flip him at the trade deadline... That'll hurt. But Matthew didn't get out of Calgary until he was due for an extension and I believe it'll be the same for Brady. Plus Palat has a full no move clause. We have to hope we can trade him July 2025 to one of 10 teams he picks. Hopefully Keefe gets him going too!

Nemec, is a hard NO. I’m not for giving up a potential defensive beast, one who may end up being the finest defenseman to ever emerge from Europe. There are other deals that are jus5 as appealing. Nemec is an absolute pillar of New Jersey’s future.

Reunite Tatar-Hischier-Mercer (a proven line from 2 seasons ago) and then have Bratt-Jack-Meier as our 2nd line. I'd say Jack has some serious support and firepower on that line, especially Meier who can play a heavy game. While I don't think we need Brady, he would be an objectively great addition, but your proposed trade still leaves us needing a top 6 winger - maybe this proposal can be tabled for another year to see if 1) Brady asks out from an underachieving Ottawa and 2) if Hämeenaho or Gritsyuk come over, but I personally don't think we need Brady with the defensive and bottom 6 beefed up now. If OTT were to trade Brady this summer, it would only be for a drastic overpay and I don't want to see this team blown up for that. With just a hair under $5M left for Mercer, I'm comfortable taking this team to Prague in October. EDIT: Appreciate you taking the time to respond to so many comments. Tatar is ok but honestly he doesn’t move the needle at all . Is a serviceable player but remember he’s two years older . Personally I think they should have taken a flyer for a younger player for a bit cheaper like Yamamoto or zadina

In that case, NJ will have +2,2M from Tkachuk contract compared to Palat. So that leaves only 2,775M in salary cap for Mercer and Foote. I dont think Ottawa will keep about 2M from his contract for 4 years. Main problem in this deal is that Ottawa will not want a veteran such as Palat and we dont have any chance to fit under the salary with his contract. NJ would have to sacrifice Mercer, which is not the way we want. One trade proposal: NJ: Brady Tkachuk (10% retained) Ott: Ondrej Palat, Nick DeSimone, Stillman Chase, 1st round pick 2026, 2nd round in 2025 Note: Nick DeSimone will give us extra 775M, 10% of retained salary will give us ~820M, in total almost 1,6M Note 2: Bad price of Palat’s contract is compensated with 2nd round pick.

Tatar might not be a star pickup individually but he was amazing with the line he had so much chemistry with in the past. For that I'm definitely excited about it, but the lack of Mercer details does have me wondering what's going on behind the scenes... Also finally a Dillon interview has been released.

I’d be celebrating to the moon if this does happen. I think it’s a pipe dream at the moment but life has taught me things can change very very quickly. And I’d basically be ok with giving them anyone they want in a deal that doesn’t have the name Hughes on the back of their sweater. Brady is worth it.

If Fitz manages to pull off a deal for Brady, that truly is him sliding all the chip in on this team for the next couple years. The top six would be locked in beyond then, but he has built an improved team top to bottom, net out. And that gives them at least two shots at it before needing to reevaluate the goaltending. It would be tough to see pieces like Mercer and Nemec who have so many years ahead of them gone, but it’s about win now. Since 2003, it’s been 20 years of varying levels of dumpster fire. Only bright spots being 2012 run to finals and two seasons ago beating Rags. Time to go all in for the hopes of achieving the ultimate goal of winning a fourth Stanley Cup.

The Devils Ticket sales called me to brag and ask me what I thought. I said team has improved and waiting on top winger. Although everyone can be an armchair critic, there's always things going on not yet reported. Brady has been practicing in Red Bank and it's not completely out of the picture.

We got our top6 winger with Tatar back! Like this comment if you think Joe should get on his hands and knees, kiss fitzy’s feet and call him daddy. Our team is set! Fitz has done almost everything right since he took over, you can count on one hand the mistakes he’s made. Don’t judge fitz solely on a lost season last year where we had more money on IR than on the active roster, vitek and shmid fell off drastically and no goalie wanted to move their no trade clause. Fitz has completely rebuilt this team this offseason and we arguably have the best team we’ve had under fitz or shero and he deserves credit when it’s due! LGD!
@abrahaml5641 I don't think many people are as excited about Tatar as you are. I like the move, but he is certainly NOT what people had in mind for a Top 6 forward. Fitz has made a ton of mistakes,. He has created the mess we were in, he is doing a decent job of fixing it. I am optimistic for next season. Adding Brady would put him in a legendary stratosphere
The Tatar Nico Mercer line 2 years ago was one of the best lines in all of hockey. They were all like a +40 Everyone and their sister wanted Tatar back last year. He’s a perfect fit for what this team needs and already has chemistry. We don’t need another 45 goal scorer, it’s about having the right players and Tatar is definitely one of them.

Why don't we do this but trade Casey and Palat and Mercer instead? Mercer adds some value and they can't afford to pay Nemo in a couple years anyway. They already have Sanderson and Chabot on expensive deals, but Casey would be a cheaper option that is more nimble than what they already have. Plus Brady isn't going just anywhere. He's the team captain and not that cheap with 3 years of NMC coming up so if he's not happy then nobody will want that. So why trade Nemo if we don't have to?

We also have Seamus Casey signed to an ELC who could possibly replace Nemec However, I still don't think the trade is worth it. Mercer-Palat-Nemec provide more value to our team than B. Tkachuk would by himself. Jack has been able to produce with many different players, I don't doubt his capability

This is definitely not happening this year, if at all, and Fitz would really have to pay to get Palat off the books in this trade. It would probably take a high pick, a blue chip prospect, Mercer, and Nemec at a minimum. I enjoy the discussion, it is fun to talk about, but just think this is pure hopium. Unless Brady demands a trade and forces NJ to the top of the list this won't happen at all via trade and I don't think Brady is there yet with Ottawa. It's more likely when Brady makes it to UFA if Fitz is still here, the ties to NJ are still strong, Palat is gone, and the cap has gone up.
As much as I'd like to see it, I don't see it. Ottawa looks like they're trying to make the playoffs this year. They're not going to trade Brady if that's their goal. If they wanted to rebuild, I think they might be ok with Mercer and Nemec for Brady but I don't see why they'd want Palat. If Ottawa stinks and drops out of contention this season ... and that part is entirely likely because they're Ottawa ... MAYBE something could happen before the trade deadline or next off-season but it would still take some serious cap maneuvering.

One thing to factor in about missing a Top 6 Forward, 3 of our D are offensively gifted. We have a Dougie bomb again! Luke & Nemec can both SKATE and since they'll be playing less minutes this season they should both be FLYING. I'm sure their offensive game will grow under Keefe too. You can look at each line like there's an Offensive D and a Defensive D pairing. That's a luxury most teams don't have! They are still young and either one could go through a sophomore slump this season... But if they only get better we will be more than fine without making a blockbuster trade.
Ottawa won't be trading their captain until they absolutely have to. By all means if they aren't in the playoff race, Ullmark refuses to sign an extension and they are forced to flip him at the trade deadline... That'll hurt. But Matthew didn't get out of Calgary until he was due for an extension and I believe it'll be the same for Brady.
Plus Palat has a full no move clause. We have to hope we can trade him July 2025 to one of 10 teams he picks. Hopefully Keefe gets him going too!

Nemec, is a hard NO. I’m not for giving up a potential defensive beast, one who may end up being the finest defenseman to ever emerge from Europe. There are other deals that are jus5 as appealing. Nemec is an absolute pillar of New Jersey’s future.

Reunite Tatar-Hischier-Mercer (a proven line from 2 seasons ago) and then have Bratt-Jack-Meier as our 2nd line. I'd say Jack has some serious support and firepower on that line, especially Meier who can play a heavy game. While I don't think we need Brady, he would be an objectively great addition, but your proposed trade still leaves us needing a top 6 winger - maybe this proposal can be tabled for another year to see if 1) Brady asks out from an underachieving Ottawa and 2) if Hämeenaho or Gritsyuk come over, but I personally don't think we need Brady with the defensive and bottom 6 beefed up now. If OTT were to trade Brady this summer, it would only be for a drastic overpay and I don't want to see this team blown up for that. With just a hair under $5M left for Mercer, I'm comfortable taking this team to Prague in October.

@@runninwiththedevilsI dont see a way to sign Mercer and get Tkachuk with the salary cap NJ has. Lets say we put in trade the best option from NJ’s point of view: Palat + sth. In that case, NJ will have +2,2M from Tkachuk contract compared to Palat. So that leaves only 2,775M in salary cap for Mercer and Foote. I dont think Ottawa will keep about 2M from his contract for 4 years. Main problem in this deal is that Ottawa will not want a veteran such as Palat and we dont have any chance to fit under the salary with his contract. NJ would have to sacrifice Mercer, which is not the way we want.
One trade proposal:
NJ: Brady Tkachuk (10% retained)
Ott: Ondrej Palat, Nick DeSimone, Stillman Chase, 1st round pick 2026, 2nd round in 2025
Note: Nick DeSimone will give us extra 775M, 10% of retained salary will give us ~820M, in total almost 1,6M
Note 2: Bad price of Palat’s contract is compensated with 2nd round pick.

If Fitz manages to pull off a deal for Brady, that truly is him sliding all the chip in on this team for the next couple years. The top six would be locked in beyond then, but he has built an improved team top to bottom, net out. And that gives them at least two shots at it before needing to reevaluate the goaltending. It would be tough to see pieces like Mercer and Nemec who have so many years ahead of them gone, but it’s about win now. Since 2003, it’s been 20 years of varying levels of dumpster fire. Only bright spots being 2012 run to finals and two seasons ago beating Rags. Time to go all in for the hopes of achieving the ultimate goal of winning a fourth Stanley Cup.

Fitz has done almost everything right since he took over, you can count on one hand the mistakes he’s made.
Don’t judge fitz solely on a lost season last year where we had more money on IR than on the active roster, vitek and shmid fell off drastically and no goalie wanted to move their no trade clause.
Fitz has completely rebuilt this team this offseason and we arguably have the best team we’ve had under fitz or shero and he deserves credit when it’s due! LGD!

The Tatar Nico Mercer line 2 years ago was one of the best lines in all of hockey. They were all like a +40
Everyone and their sister wanted Tatar back last year.
He’s a perfect fit for what this team needs and already has chemistry.
We don’t need another 45 goal scorer, it’s about having the right players and Tatar is definitely one of them.

Why don't we do this but trade Casey and Palat and Mercer instead? Mercer adds some value and they can't afford to pay Nemo in a couple years anyway. They already have Sanderson and Chabot on expensive deals, but Casey would be a cheaper option that is more nimble than what they already have. Plus Brady isn't going just anywhere. He's the team captain and not that cheap with 3 years of NMC coming up so if he's not happy then nobody will want that. So why trade Nemo if we don't have to?

I’d love for this to happen. But I think Staios wants to try to convince Brady to stay. Otherwise he wouldn’t have made the Ullmark move and brought in multiple veterans. It won’t work, of course, and Brady will ask to be traded next Summer.

This is definitely not happening this year, if at all, and Fitz would really have to pay to get Palat off the books in this trade. It would probably take a high pick, a blue chip prospect, Mercer, and Nemec at a minimum. I enjoy the discussion, it is fun to talk about, but just think this is pure hopium. Unless Brady demands a trade and forces NJ to the top of the list this won't happen at all via trade and I don't think Brady is there yet with Ottawa. It's more likely when Brady makes it to UFA if Fitz is still here, the ties to NJ are still strong, Palat is gone, and the cap has gone up.

Ottawa looks like they're trying to make the playoffs this year. They're not going to trade Brady if that's their goal.
If they wanted to rebuild, I think they might be ok with Mercer and Nemec for Brady but I don't see why they'd want Palat.
If Ottawa stinks and drops out of contention this season ... and that part is entirely likely because they're Ottawa ... MAYBE something could happen before the trade deadline or next off-season but it would still take some serious cap maneuvering.
