Wow! You just made the cool yet tough riff sound absolutely simple. I'm an intermediate guitar player, this tutorial is one of the best on You Tube and the Web. Thank you for sharing this. Simply brilliant!
Hey Dave Munoz I agree that I talk too much sometimes. LOL ! If you look in the description you'll see links to navigate to different parts of the teaching video quickly.
this is an excellent breakdown of the chords use in the song. however, for me the difficult part is not the chords nor the tempo picking (with patience and practice it can be nailed down relatively easily); the difficult part is the _stamina_ to keep that tempo. watching live performances by John doing this _while_ singing backing vocals is mind-blowing to watch...every time.
Keeping up the tempo is the challenge for sure Dexter. I like it a little slower than RHCP plays it but that's a personal preference. Playing this riff and singing is a challenge. I can do it but when performing solo I usually skip the riff and play the chords while singing. Have you seen my cover? Here you go. th-cam.com/video/I8M7ehEadlo/w-d-xo.html
This is fantastic! Thank you so much! Keep doing what you're doing, because no one else out there does. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that we really appreciate it.
Thanks so much for your comment! New developments coming soon for Quail Studios! We have videos in process, plans for expansion, etc.. We'll keep you all informed and also how you can help.
Hello, I've always loved this song but would always fail to play it and I'd always get so disappointed in myself, but now I have hope to one day play it up to speed thanks to you! Thank you so much for putting in the time to teach us this song!
Yes, thanks! The song is actually in G# minor with chords, E major (inversion), B major, F# Major etc. Super difficult with a barré at the 4th fret at 108 bpm??...or around that speed?😫. Playing with capo at 4th fret makes it a lot easier 👏👌ie the E minor shape you play is shifted two tones up to G#minor, same and much easier. But to get it up to 108 bpm for 5 minutes needs STRICT alternate picking and very relaxed wrist action. Also 2nd and 4th beats are accented! A triplet demisemiquaver hammer on👌.John Frusciante not only keeps up the speed, plays for over 5 minutes (very tiring for wrist muscles) and provides backing vocals👏👏THANKS AGAIN FOR A MOST PERCEPTIVE TUTORIAL👏Fantastic musical analysis!
The original is played at around 104bpm on a Stratocaster, very fast with strict alternate picking. This is slower probably at around 90bpm? Still good.
Just to let you know, this is not a beginner's song. But it is OK for you to work on it. I'm just letting you know just in case you get ideas about giving up later on. thanks for learning and striving, and doing the hard thing! Take care! Hal
You my good man have jusy earned yourself a new subscriber! Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. Not many videos show how to play it very well like you do nor do the tabs. Thank You
Just heard the song on thr radio and I remembered your tutorial, which drives me to learn the song in your version with the kapo, thanks a lot from a fan of yours in Germany, Heidelberg,
I'm struggling to with the intro I was wondering if you could do a video just for the riff so you can go into extra detail step by step! I love this song and it was this video that has inspired me to start guitar properly! I've got the hang of everything else just struggling with the intro. Thanks so much!!!!
You are the definitive "keepin it simple" guitar dude that saved me from struggling further with this song "capo" free. Thanks so much for making this video and freely sharing your knowledge with us all. Its like you said, none of the tabs indicate using a capo. I'm still not at 100% of the speed but pretty close and enjoying it.
Very good Jarrod, I love playing this song this way. I have been criticized for not being true to the way that John Frusciante plays the song without a capo. For beginners and intermediate players it may be impossible to play this song without a capo. John definitely has a great, distinctive sound when he plays this song, and he is fast too. All that repetition without missing a note! Amazing! There are some slide sounds that we cannot get with a capo but this is a great place to start. Thank you for the comment!
Well those people should put themselves out there and see how they like the internet criticizing their hard work. You even start out saying this isn't how the tabs all show it, and that you found it easier to play this way!! Bottom line is your video made it possible for me (and I'm sure many others) to play the song. It sounds extremely close to the real thing. No one that has heard me play it can tell the difference and I fully enjoy playing the song now rather than than fighting a losing battle trying to learn without a capo. Cheers!
The original is played at around 104bpm on a Stratocaster, very fast with strict alternate picking. This is slower probably at around 90bpm? Still good.
I love this version. Check it out... This version sounds exactly like the Chili Pepper's version in many respects. Most people won't be able to tell the difference unless they listen to you and then RHCP side by side.
It's not that hard without a capo. The real trick to it is to finger pick it rather than flat pick it. It's much easier to get it smoothly up to temp that way.
made it so easy, like, I just started playing two months ago, and I think I can play this riff already (if I give time to it) and I can play the chords without any trouble. Well done
This is a kind of intimidating riff, and the way you explained everything (strumming too!) was really super helpful! Thanks for the awesome tutorial, liked and subbed. =)
nice 👏 I still think the strumming accents would be more crisp on acoustic exactly as you play it here, or maybe its just me getting used to this version. Thanx for replying!
Thanx a lot fr such an amazing lesson. The usual method is no doubt good but your clever idea of capo is amazing. It made things really easy and properly suitable for acoustic guitar. It's also easy to sing along with it now. Thank you so much :)

thanks Jared! "the other guys".. could that be Justin Sandercoe, or Marty Schwartz? Those guys have been on TH-cam since the very early days. If you share my videos that will help. Are you talking about the part at 2:29? You pluck the open D string, then hammer at the 4th fret with the 3rd finger (left hand). That's how we get the first two notes of the D chord. Or.. you could pluck the open D and the pluck the 4th fret if you can't do the hammer right now. Practice the hammer. Let me know if that answers your question. Give me a time on the video if I've guessed it wrong.

Maybe I should do a song video for Snow? In my next videoed practice I'll do it. I do have videos where I play the whole song. In the past TH-cam's algorithm calls me out because they say I'm covering a song. There is no way to dispute that and so and I have to share ad revenue with someone. I've been ignoring that lately and just doing whatever I want because ad revenue is really not that profitable anyway. That's one reason why I have a Patreon page. www.patreon.com/quail_studios Check out the song playlist that we have. th-cam.com/play/PLhI97quE-W-LSYbA903P6TrPBxl0PtMB-.html or cover song playlist - th-cam.com/play/PLhI97quE-W-Kj5WZUicTCQT4rNpDF1LRR.html
