I remember when he had a show on tv in the 1950's. Loved his voice..rendition of "Let it Snow, Let SNow, Let it Snow, Racing With the Moon, and a lot of other songs.
Even though he was a band leader and a singer of pop standards, the greatest country and western song ever recordedwas his huge hit "Riders in the Sky." Yipee yiyay yipee yiyo!
Curious that Arlene thought that it "wasn't really singing" that Monroe was most famous for. He had all sorts of hits as a singer but a lot of people tended to regard him more as a bandleader (who also sang) because he had a rather curious hyper-masculine singing voice that some folks poked fun at. Actually, listening to him sing now on youtube, he sounds terrific.
I'm not familiar with him, but I'm surprised that the panel had such a difficult time, knowing he was a trumpet player, singer and band leader. I know there were a lot of them in those days but, wow, he really stumped them!
He's a band leader, something like a Glenn Miller or Harry James except he also sings and was often in specialty numbers in musical movies. One of the best Vaughn Monroe moments IMO was his bit in "Meet The People" starring Lucille Ball and Dick Powell. He does a specialty number with June Allyson and Virginia O'Brien "I want to recognize the tune..." the song went.
@weightfeather1 and this isn't the only episode on youtube where they mention something about having a weenie........has to mean that they have a hunch or an idea
His run on the charts was roughly fifteen years, from the early 40's to the mid-50's. He may have been sidelined by rock 'n roll, but fifteen years on the charts is a long span for any singer.
Watched this show as a kid and loved it. I still do.

Great singer, known for his fantastic version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky".
In those days "No schmucks allowed " respect was demanded then!!! great show
it was hilarious hearing his mickey mouse kind of voice when he had such a masculine voice
VAughn Monroe is from my hometown of Cudahy, WI--I love his stentorian voice--"Ghost riders in the sky, etc!!
When the panel discovered he was a popular baritone, they should have quickly closed in on his identity.
Man it must be hard to sing, lead a band , and play trumpet at the same time.
Props to Steve Allen - from one little sound, he recognized a trumpet mouthpiece.

A truly gifted singer, too bad he died at such a relatively young age.
Bennett was making a joke. Vaughn Monroe wasn't possibly old enough to be MM's father. They simply shared the same last stage name - hence the joke.

never heard of this guy.
I was born in the last stages of the Truman presidency. And you- you on medicare
?
Monroe's heyday was the 1940s. By the mid 50s, he was pretty much history. The rise of rock 'n' roll changed everything.
nah he had plenty of hits all the way up to 1955 i think
