JOAN FONTAINE FAN==THANKS for this ART CARNEY ""WHATS MY LINE"" film probably from it seems 1955/56 when the ""HONEYMOONERS"" was at its PRIME RUN!!! ARLENES hair is DARK so usually the early to mid 1950s!!! Very EDUCATED panel as they would HAVE TO BE to know of so MANY PROFESSIONS being of MILITARY/PRESIDENTIAL/POLITICAL/CITY LIFE/CAREERS OF MANY DIFFERENT INDIVIDGUAL CITIZENS OF NEW YORK CITY!!!!! ALL AMERICAN PANEL☆☆☆☆☆ 5 star film clip
Master of his craft. How we loved Ed Norton in THE HONEYMOONERS! Mr. Carney, you are missed. Peace to your bright spirit. Thanks for sharing this What's My Line clip!
I couldn't agree more with you NJkid67. His nuance performance in Harry & Tonto is a classic. He truly was a great, and I do mean great actor. I miss this guy!
Jackie Gleason and Art Carney are so famous to us now, yet on this show Jackie was accidently named Jimmy Gleason and Art named Al Carney by the panelists.
LOL!! He still dressed up like Norton even off THE HONEYMOONERS set!! That being said, ART Carney was one of the most talented, yet under-rated actors of his day in Hollywood. However, by the end of his life he had won an Emmy and Tony and even a Best Actor Academy Award for HARRY AND TONTO defeating people like Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino that year. Priceless.
He had to leave imediatly after because he was due back on the set of the honeymooners...he appeared on wml while they were on a break...the man was amazing...rip Art Carney..your work here will never be forgotten
Art Carney made his uncredited film debut in 1941 in POT O' GOLD. He also did his first made-for-television film in 1954. He did not make another feature film until the mid-60s.
i named my last dog norton, after art carney's character in the honeymooners. they both passed away within a week of each other. rest in peace norton, and norton..
The reason that Carney was able to alter his voice level is because of his radio career. Long before he was Ed Norton, he impersonated FDR on the March of Time as well as other famous people. I recall seeing him on Merve Griffin or Mike Douglas's show and did the FDR voice with his back to the camera. The audience recognized his impersonation and gave him a nice round of applause.
@CollegeLoheart Thanks for the reply but Joyce Randolph is still alive. Do a search here on YT and you can watch an interesting video about her career and her times with the Honeymooners. I think she's in her 80's now.
The routine I always remember is where Norton is teaching Ralph to play golf. Gleason is dressed in full golf pants and tam. He is lining up the ball with the club. Norton says "Address the ball." Gleason asks what he means. Carney thinks for a minute as he is taking instructions from a book. He then says, "Well, when you address the ball, you say "hello, ball." It's been 50+ yrs but that line still makes me laugh.
The answers to the radio questions are interesting - "yes" to dramatic acting, but also "yes" to the program being a comedy. I don't know what Carney is referring to, but he did appear on the Henry Morgan Show (and so did Arnold Stang, whom Arlene thought he was). It was purely a comedy program.
He did some great movies in his later career; The Late Show and Going In Style come to mind. And I would have loved to have seen him as Felix Unger in the original Odd Couple. In fact, he and Matthau would later be re-teamed in House Calls.
@Skyhawkct HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS PROFOUND AND LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE OF "OTHELLO" ON THE LARGE SCREEN. JUST KIDDING. "POT O 'GOLD". BUT MUCH LATER, HE AND JACKIE, MADE SOME PRETTY GOOD FLICKS. ART-HARRY & TONTO. JACKIE-HUSTLER & GIGOT.
The one movie he did was the 1941 Pot of Gold with James Stewart and Paulette Goddard where he play a part in a band and an announcer near the end of the movie. That is him.
I love watching Dorothy Kilgallen -- she most often got the mystery guest correct! The other panelists on the show would agree with me -- if they were alive.
It's 1941's "Pot o' Gold," a reprise of the popular radio show he was part of at the time. Carney was uncredited in the movie, but was on the mic at time serving as program announcer, as folks listened in across the country, because they may be called and win $1,000.
Al Carney and Jimmy Gleason... I'd just watched Jackie Gleason's first WML and I didn't expect them to get Art Carney's name wrong as well. So embarrassing.
There’s nothing like The Honeymooners! You might be interested in this NEW audio comedy, “A Trip to the Moon” starring Joyce Randolph of The Honeymooners AND two ghost stories listed on my channel “Claude Chabot Presents” right here on YT. Just follow the link here and enjoy! th-cam.com/video/Hex2ltykNTM/w-d-xo.html--Claud.
Yes he did, while Al Pacino (Godfather - Part II) and even Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny) gave far more deserving performances, but weren't as long as Carney in the bussiness.
"When a well dressed lady enters the elevator, he briefly removes his hat as a compliment to her." So that sign of respect should only be given to women who can afford nice clothes? What does "well bred" mean? Well raised? Or just a WASP? It's better to have clean hat than to pay tribute to my father by wearing his old one? So much of this is irrelevant and antiquated advice. True dignity and class has very little to do with superficial rules. I don't disagree with everything in the article tho.
Putting LOL at the end of a sentence doesn't make it funny. You still don't understand the difference between you're and your, I suggest you quit while you're behind. Since when have genuinely funny people needed to give people a clue as to what is funny? Cartoon villains and the insane laugh at their own attempts at humour.
art carney & jackie gleason, i can't imagine two more talented performers being paired up on television ever again.
Art Carney was a super talented man... Talent such as his is so dearly missed...
Art Carney was the best character actor that ever lived. Period.
Ned Beatty was pretty decent too

LOVE Art Carney. So funny, so multitalented.
Dorothy Kilgallen drives me nuts, hogging all the screentime she can.
what a really cool guy and true American
He was the best!! An original and timeless.Would be just as funny to todays generations as he was back then.R.I.P. norton!!
I find the fact that he took off his hat before greeting the panel a sign of great respect. Wish we did that in this generation.
A Brilliant Actor & Comedian! RIP Art Carney.
I couldn't agree more with you NJkid67. His nuance performance in Harry & Tonto is a classic. He truly was a great, and I do mean great actor. I miss this guy!
Jackie Gleason and Art Carney are so famous to us now, yet on this show Jackie was accidently named Jimmy Gleason and Art named Al Carney by the panelists.
he ended up as a bigger star than all of them
RIP Art we miss you
I always enjoyed these shows. Thanks for posting. Roy

Well, not any more, but certainly in the years after this show aired. : )
He was so cute.
I couldn't help noticing, not only was he able to disguise his voice before the panel, but he changed it up quite a bit, what a great talent he was!
Art Carney is one of those people you just have to love...
Watch one of his appearances on Carson from I think the late 70s hilarious
He had to leave imediatly after because he was due back on the set of the honeymooners...he appeared on wml while they were on a break...the man was amazing...rip Art Carney..your work here will never be forgotten
Awesome Awesome Awesome video!!!
THANKS for posting this!!!!!!

thanx for posting this classic.
Good ole Norton! What a talented guy Art Carney was.
i named my last dog norton, after art carney's character in the honeymooners. they both passed away within a week of each other. rest in peace norton, and norton..
Art Carney is an outstanding choice. Thank you for sharing this great and fun video.
Art forever!
George Vreeland Hill

WHAT'S MY LINE, A TRUE TV CLASSIC !
love Dorothy's McCarthy reference
He was on the Star Wars Holiday Special.. Ha ha ha
art carney is my great uncle, i only met him like twice
How cute was he??!!!
One of comedy Greats !
I guess my comment didnt get posted. What i wanted to say is Art was one of the greatest comediens.
Closest I've ever seen someone come to wearing a "Yogi Bear hat."
He may have inspired Yogi,he and Jackie both inspired The Flintstones
you want to see Art Carney in a great film? Try Harry and Tonto. Done in the 70's and I belive he even wont the Oscar for it.
He is cute!!!
These are addicting and make you long for nostilgia but that one guy gets everyone's name wrong.
I did not know that Carney was a native of New Rochelle. Ed Norton was from Oyster Bay.
My father went to AA meetings with him in NY
I KNOW! I mean, she's ON television at that moment! It's so frustrating!
@CollegeLoheart Thanks for the reply but Joyce Randolph is still alive. Do a search here on YT and you can watch an interesting video about her career and her times with the Honeymooners. I think she's in her 80's now.
he turned that limp into a swagger
He is one of a kind!
We don't see Comedians with this kind of talent today, Richard Prio was the last.
I liked him in The Late Show as a detective who takes the bus
The routine I always remember is where Norton is teaching Ralph to play golf. Gleason is dressed in full golf pants and tam. He is lining up the ball with the club. Norton says "Address the ball." I'm the same way. I must have seen this episode 20 times but that line is hilarious every time!

I can't believe it took them so long to figure out he was talking about televison.

JUST KIDDING. "POT O 'GOLD". BUT MUCH LATER, HE AND JACKIE, MADE SOME PRETTY GOOD FLICKS. ART-HARRY & TONTO. JACKIE-HUSTLER & GIGOT.
Not to forget "Going in Style," where he plays a bank robber with George Burns and Lee Strasberg.
He and Jackie did The Laughmaker for CBS in 1953
A classic !
Brilliant preformer!!
Va Va VOOM can't be beat
Hey in this '' What's My Line ''
Art Carney Wore his Ed Norton suit. Alright Art !!! 😂😂😂👍
The one movie he did was the 1941 Pot of Gold with James Stewart and Paulette Goddard where he play a part in a band and an announcer near the end of the movie. That is him.
@63utuber The comedy Carney was referring to was more than likely "The Jackie Gleason Show" which he was doing at the time.
Someone please post his (final) 1974 appearance during which he talks about Harry and Tonto prior to winning the Academy Award.
It was nice of Norton, um I mean Art Carney to get all dressed up for this show! LOL.
It was aired May 16, 1954.
I was thinking the same thing as I was watching this:)
Didn't you just want to scream at Dorothy, "TELEVISION, you idiot!"?
Interesting that he chose to come on WML in costume.
Incase you noticed, he did leave fast because of a meeting he had over a henway. It’s in his autobiography.
Lots of celebrity guests used a fake accent to disguise their true voices-- Art Carney must have used six or seven . . . now, that's versatility ! !
I love watching Dorothy Kilgallen -- she most often got the mystery guest correct! The other panelists on the show would agree with me -- if they were alive.
before denzell williams, mt. vernon had art carney!
@MissLori
... it must be the fedora he's wearing. :))
He had great handwriting... compared to the other comedians I've seen in all these clips. Favorite is still Buddy Hackett's drawing of himself though.
He also got Art Carney's home town wrong. Art Carney was originally from Mt. Vernon, NY.
@CollegeLoheart because he was younger then the other cast
He's Christopher Lloyd's dad, or Christopher Lloyd's mother's close friend at least. Surely.
Martin Willett no he’s not please google before making statements
They funny thing is Art Carney is a legend. Who is that woman?
Does anyone know the one movie he did up 'till the mid 50's?
It's 1941's "Pot o' Gold," a reprise of the popular radio show he was part of at the time. Carney was uncredited in the movie, but was on the mic at time serving as program announcer, as folks listened in across the country, because they may be called and win $1,000.
Yeah! :)
Television history fail. It was the most popular game show of its time.
Al Carney and Jimmy Gleason... I'd just watched Jackie Gleason's first WML and I didn't expect them to get Art Carney's name wrong as well. So embarrassing.
I accept your opinion, but Pacino gives kinda one of the best performances ever. Those eyes!!!
Norton on Honeymooners. I always liked him so funny n talented

Why were French accents the go-to voice disguise?
sorry about that ralph, it'd denzell washington...
Yes he did, while Al Pacino (Godfather - Part II) and even Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny) gave far more deserving performances, but weren't as long as Carney in the bussiness.
Maybe Jack Klugman and Tony Randall - second place
Actually...Bennett got it wrong..he’s ART Carney..they SHOULD OF played with them a little more.
"Well bred" in this article means people raised with manners. They can be black, white or whatever.
No wonder this game show was cancelled.
Al Carney?!?!
don't be hard on yourself!
"I too believe taking your hat off is a sign of great respect."
It's one thing to simply believe that, but can you explain why that is?
...After 19 years. Duh.
When you call somebody dumb don't mix up your and you're.
Do you know what a joke is?
Um, you and your Dad were kind of missing the meaning of the "Anonymous" part of AA.
"When a well dressed lady enters the elevator, he briefly removes his hat as a compliment to her." So that sign of respect should only be given to women who can afford nice clothes? 300th like!
oh i dont know about that. i've seen all those and i think art did a much better performance.
Al Carney?? Epic fail.
@MissLori Kind of like hank azaria. i think he's very hot.
Famous???
Hard to hear.
