    This is how young people get killed everyday. Had one of these young fellas panicked and attempted to outrun the train back through the tunnel, the train could have hit them. The fact that the engineer blew his horn inside the tunnel would suggest that he saw these young guys and was himself scared shitless about the possibility of hitting them. Not a good situation for either party.

    • @BepBepStev

      In reality, code is to blo horns before a crossing, tunnel, or bridge to move animals and people out of the way.

    • @Caseytify
      @Caseytify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Maybe he meant "people get killed doing dumb things like this every day," which is accurate. It's the reason we have the expression "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."
      This was a very stupid thing to do. They got very, very lucky.

    • @animenut69
      @animenut69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Got any proof that it's common to blow horns for tunnels? How about making your point in a mature fashion instead of coming across as a piece of shit. And actually this is how young people get killed every day by not using their brains and thinking of the consequences of doing completely stupid stuff like this. Kids should face some jail time for this stunt. They could of been cut in half or dragged down the rails and turned into a bloody pulp.

    • @jaredkelly930
      @jaredkelly930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      One eyed sissy: you're actually incorrect. I'm an engineer and there's no where in GCOR that states you have to blow for bridges and tunnels. It's all personal preference of the engineer.

    • @jaredkelly930
      @jaredkelly930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Then yours is the only one. We've got 8 tunnels on my bnsf line and a fuck ton of bridges. We only blow for crossings. If it's not addressed in GCOR it's personal preference here, same with most Class 1's.

    on average there are roughly between 20 to 25 trains per day on this Union Pacific north / south mainline that runs from Portland, OR to Los Angeles, CA. I wouldn't be caught dead in that tunnel. Usually there is a siding not too far from either end of the tunnel and another train coming the other way could be coming in a few minutes after that one. Find a old spur line or abandoned secondary line if you want to tunnel explore. Not the most busiest mainline on the West Coast.

    • @SomeGuy-lw2po
      @SomeGuy-lw2po 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I know US trains are run completely differently, but it the UK we can have up to 24 trains an hour, that's 2m30s from the end of one train to the front of the next.
      Yet we still get complete idiot who try there luck on the track

    • @MGSLurmey
      @MGSLurmey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Trains here in the UK are much more frequent because they're mostly passenger trains and are much smaller. The trains OP is talking about are likely freight trains like this one, which can literally be around a mile long. The size of this one surprised me but this isn't even the limit.
      I agree that it was stupid to explore a busy train tunnel but I think it was even more stupid of them to sprint down the tracks. The risk of tripping over and being stranded on the rails with a train hot on your heels isn't nice to think about.
      If you're ever going to explore a train tunnel, have a lot of light, walk at a leisurely pace and stick to the sides to minimise risk. Trains are hard to miss but if you manage to miss one you might just lose your life.
      This has been a PSA from some random guy on the internet. You're welcome.

    Year 1943, i was 11. Me and my brother explored a train tunnel that lead from Virginia to Tennessee. We were seeing how long we could walk for and a few hours after, we saw a dim light in the distance. We ran back but it was no use. The giant steam trains roar came closer. The whistle blew 4 times before it was only around 10 meters away. We dove in the side of the tunnel. I had a small slit in the wall i slid into. My friend was on the opposite side. He had nowhere to go. James F. Miller, lost his life on October 18. 1943. In Virginia. He was hit by the giant. An his arm was flattened and severed. I made it out with a scar from not physical. But in my mind. Im now 88. And live with him, Always on my mind. Never enter a tunnel. The Richard west tunnel collapsed in 1957 and that train, was nicknamed the Dust Devil. But i called it The Night Light. In 2006, i went back to the tunnel. And camped there on the tracks. At night, i swear, i heard the haunting deep whistle. I woke up and screamed. My son asked what happened. And he said my face was, "paler than snow". I yelled out "RUN!" And the rocks moved from the pile of collapsed tunnel and i saw the faint blue train powering toward us. My son looked at me and the train turned to mist. He looked at the tunnel and said nothing changed. I never returned to the Richard west tunnel. Steer clear of there. I warned you. I hope i can be free now. But remember. I warned y'all.

    Hey, I know you knew a live train was a possibility in this case, but I've seen numerous videos where the dumbasses can't figure out if a section of rail has been recently active or not. Tip: Look at the rails. If the inside, top-surface of the rails is shiny, it's an active line. The shinier it is, the more recent and/or active it is. Heavy, crusty rust instead - not been used in a while. Just sayin'...

      Here in Australia (I assume more san than the US), many level crossings in the countryside lack boom gates. A person got hit by a high-speed XPT train here a few months ago. I'm not sure of the speed it was doing at the time of impact, but those trains operate at a line speed of up to 160 km/h while in service.
      Fast trains are a bit of a magnet of collisions, as crossing incidents have also happened several times with Tilt Trains in Australia's state of Queensland.
      Just goes to show that trains have right of way and everyone should be reasonably careful around them. I hear that train/car collisions are pretty common in the US with all its level crossings. Thankfully, the only instance of a driver putting himself at risk on the Sydney network I recall from my recent searches was an old man somehow driving his car over the platform and onto the tracks. Apparently he thought the accelerator was the brake, but thankfully no trains hit his car.

    My grandad talked about how they used to shortcut the walk to town by walking through a train tunnel in Nottingham, UK, and if the trains came and you didn't make it to the little shelter areas that are wider then you had to get properly against the wall as flat as you can. And back then they were still using a lot of steam trains, so you would get all the steam blown into your face, lol.

    • @awizardalso
      @awizardalso 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Don't stand up against the wall. If there is no, what I call 'cubby holes', in the wall, the best and safest option is to lie down and roll up against against the wall. There is less overhang from the wheel assembly (called trucks) providing more open space between the trucks and the wall than there is between the body of the rail cars and the wall

    This is known as Tunnel #4 on this particular rail line just near the willamette pass summit at Odell Lake, Oregon. One of the longest if not the longest tunnel on this rail line. There is a sign posted just at the front of the opening indicating that it's about 3/4 of a mile long. Very familiar with this experience myself, but that tunnel is lined with "cubbies" staggered on each side spaced out about every 50 or so feet (which you can see at the beginning of the video) which workers would use to stand in during construction/maintenance in the event a train approaches. On a hike down this rail line, there is another tunnel (#7 I believe) that I decided to run into when a train was approaching, but didn't realize it didn't have cubby holes in the wall so I had to lie down in the little trench on the side just like these guys did.

      vishnu n A lot of trains are Diesel Electric, which are engines that run on burning liquid diesel fuel. Fumes come from burning this fuel, which can sometimes clog longer tunnels. Tunnels that were used by coal-fired engines would have shafts for the smoke and steam to blow out. You can suffocate if exposed to diesel fumes for long enough.

    • @Steampunk360
      @Steampunk360 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Depending on the tunnel and engine driving the cars. Some tunnels have such narrow walls that the engine has to go just the right speed to not smoke out it's own combustion. making the oxygen behind the train extremely low. only the draft after the very last car is going to bring fresh air in. And as you saw sometimes it can take a while for all the cars to clear the tunnel.
      In some tunnels many workers have died from asphyxiation. Don't assume all train tunnels are safe based on speculation.

    You're in the middle of a pitch black and really long train tunnel when you suddenly feel the tracks vibrate. You look behind you, hear the ear rape version of Thomas the Tank Engine, and see a faint red glow approaching from around the bend.

    Back in the 60's my uncle had a 300 acre piece of land 40 miles NE of Spokane, WA. The main N/S rail line ran close to his place and a series of lakes were next to the track. The northern end of the lakes was fed by a small river which went over a waterfall into a pool and after about 100 feet, into the first lake. The best fishing was right at the base of the fall. One could walk 1/2 mile along the track and reach this choice fishing spot, but the track went through a fairly long tunnel and the walk around wasn't easy and took a lot more time. One could carefully listen for a train and still get caught in the tunnel. I walked through that tunnel many times and never had a train come while I was in there, but my uncle did get caught once and found a beam he stood behind while the train went rumbling through....an experience he said he had no desire to repeat.

Wish you had kept recording so we could see how you all were when you finally made it out of the tunnel. Congrats, you made a horror movie without even trying. You should try to sell this to the railroad or some production company to use in a safety film about the dangers of trespassing on railroad property. Hope you've all recovered from the experience.

    if you ever are in this situation lay down in the gravel. There is room for the trains wheels and brake assemblies to go over your back even if you are pretty much right at the tracks. I was a freight conductor and the old hands talked about how to handle situations like this all the time. just dont wear a back pack it will get hung on wheels and low hanging assemblies

    You know what's funny about this video? Nothing. There are 3 kinds of trains:
    1. 1013 screaming up Chestnut street at 5 mph. I was 2 feet away and perfectly safe.
    B. Acela 2257 approaching Mansfield at 151 mph. Stand behind the guardrail.
    And finally there is any train in a tunnel. There is no escape, no doors (why would there be in the middle of Oregon) and you might survive by crouching into a corner. Thankfully there was no dragging equipment on that manifest, a loose tarp or shifted bulkhead could take your head off.

    I'd say things got really intense around 8:45 when the train started picking up speed. With very little space between the tracks and the tunnel wall, the box cars had to be swaying a bit with the train's acceleration, as well as factoring in that it was a LONG ass train, had to have made this an experience these guys wouldn't want to repeat.
