  • Learn how to do a backflip on a wakeboard 🙌
In this video, I explain how to do a Tantrum (Heelside jump with a backflip) on a wakeboard.
The first step is getting your backflips dialed in off the water. If you have the ability to learn the feeling of a back flip on a trampoline, or in some other way, it will help make this trick much easier to figure out.
Once you feel ready to take it to the water, I recommend starting off with slowing the boat down between 15-18mph so that you can learn it one-wake. this will help make your first attempts a little more forgiving.
The three major keys here are:
    1. Build speed early in your edge
    2. At the wake, aggressively stop your edge and square up to the boat
    3. Stand tall, let the wake trip you into the flip, and keep your eyes open to spot the landing
Once you are feeling pretty good about doing the tantrum one-wake, the next step is taking it wake to wake. Confidence is the key here. You already know how to do the flip, so now you just need to do it at a faster speed so you can clear both wakes. In my opinion, it's easier to do it wake to wake because the extra speed helps to snap you around in the flip more.
Hope these tips are helpful! The Tantrum is a super fun trick to add to the repertoire and opens up the door to so much more. There are tons of ways to experiment with grabbing it, and lots of additional things that build on it -- like Tantrum to Blind, Moby Dick, and Tantrum to Fakie.

So, it seems like it should be the same feeling as if you cut in pretty hard and go for a powerslide at the bottom of the wake..?

Pretty close to it, but you’re not necessarily putting force on the board into turning away, just letting your body square up when you let go with your back hand.

Hi Jake, it was nice to meet you at the boarding school. It was really cool a pro rider would sit and talk wakeboarding and gear with a couple less than average riders! Thanks for the great videos! I have been trying the approach for this trick for a while, but never feel a tripping motion. Can you do the motion without being tripped?

Was great to meet you and stoked you’re enjoying the videos! I don’t think you really feel the trip unless you are actually committing to the flip. I think the edge changed combined with the initiation of the flip is really what gives you that feeling.
