Hi Brendan, thank you for you kind comments, it was awesome fun, I currently have fun with my 5" 0-4-0 model loco at the local track, but would do this again.
Awesome video! I've heard of these, but I didn't know that they let you get that hands on, not just driving, but firing and helping to make the rake up too. If I ever visit the UK, doing this would be high on the list of things to do. Thank you very much for sharing this on TH-cam! Brendan O.
Every boy's dream Callum - I wish, I wish - fantastic footage and I felt like I was on the footplate myself! Bet you loved that experience? Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us! Cheers. Ken
Thank you for this movie thanks to him the first time I saw how the steam locomotive (from the center), and how hard the work performed and performs assistant driver best regards
Back in the day the volunteers working at broomhill used to change the points. My Gradmother used to catch the key as the train passed through and would then walk up and change the points. Looks like they don't do that anymore. Probably best as she would come home with a bruise on her arm from catching it lol.
Brought back memories, I took a 3 days driving course on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, I drove a Black 5, it was pretty in-depth, I had steam experience with steam tractors but,the other 3 guys never had much experience 2 cops and a banker. I was wondering when the fireman was filling the boiler, he didn't seem to turn on the water, only the steam to the injector. How does that work?
+calziewalzie *Definitely a different layout* than I'd expect of any of the Baldwins on California (USA) short lines; the throttle valve rotates about the longitudinal axis, a wormwheel (rather than the ratcheted Johnson bar used on non-assist reversers on U.S. hardware) controls the direction and duty cycle of the Walschaerts drive, and vacuum rather than high-pressure air controls both locomotive and train brakes. I'd already expect to dive under the cars for hookup as a head-end brakeman, as hoses need to be coupled and pressurecocks opened; hooking chains ranks for crew hazard betwixt the Janney couplers universal to United States rail, and the link-and-pin system last used by the Mt. Tamalpais & Muir Woods Ry. (Mill Valley, CA, USA) due to curves tighter than Janneys could hack. So far, no locomotive builder has managed a better workpit for the stoker than Lima (OH, USA) Locomotive Works, Inc., which still held the ergonomic prize for the coal-fired Shay when it folded in 1973; the Shay also had more usable room for the driver and his controls than any steamer before or since.
Thanks for sharing your footplate experience, they really gave you a good range of skills to try and it seems like plenty of advice and tips although we couldn't hear a lot of it while running at speed. Did you drive back to Aviemore as well? The Strathspey railway is a great line in amazing scenery which must have added to the experience. A nicely edited video that allows us to feel close to the action.
Well, I'd have a blast even driving a ride on miniature steamer, but as it stands right now I make do with my two Gauge 1 live steam locos and playing Railworks. Don't get me wrong, I love my engines dearly, but every now and then I want to ride along with them instead of chasing them down the track.
i am really a an honest steam engine enthusiast do they allow to go with the engine & have a learning session as the gentleman here seems to be like a day apprentice ? i would love to do that too- any idea?
What an embarrassing whistle. Never cared for these limey pip-squeak engines. My great uncle loved his huge 4-8-4 (Hudson?) freight locomotive. He preferred to operate it rather than go on vacation.

"If you think you're going too fast, you probably are"
Sage advice that applies to every form of vehicle..

Excellent video. Almost makes me wish I was a trainee in the steam era. I said almost.

+Richard Davis the water is the small handle underneath the fireman's seat
Great video, unusual horn :)..
GREAT vid. Just wish you could have put a mic on the instructor, would have been awsome

Will have to read your post several times to understand everything.
Thank you for sharing
Very informative on "how to do it".
Great vid, I also wish there were some english sub so I can understand what the instructor were saying. Thanks for the vid.

Nice GoPro shots!
What did you attach the spycam to?
Hi Chris, the GoPro was just attached to the roof beam of the tender using a G clamp.
i would like to do a youtube video of me doing a footplate experience
Love it!!!

why the leather caps?
I spoke to soon I just noticed the driver turn on and off the water for the injector.
I should think that lifting that regulator for the first time is a bit intimidating!
Particularly as no one seems to be looking out in the direction it's about to move in.
cool
