- Additional Information.
In this video I teach you how to sharpen gouges and carving knives with homemade material. The green sharpening wax that I put on top of the leather is optional, if you don't have it you can do it only with the leather.
In the video demonstrations I show the movements but I cut passages so that the video is not too long, it may be that when sharpening your tools you need more passes.
00:12 How to make a homemade knife and gouge sharpener:
In this chapter I teach you how to make a sharpener with a simple piece of wood and an old waist, you can do it with any other piece of leather.
04:02 Light sharpening:
The light sharpening is fine for routine sharpening when the edge is not badly damaged, use only leather or leather and wax.
When sharpening leather it is necessary to apply a certain amount of pressure, so avoid pressing on the handle so as not to break the blade, the pressure must be on the metal blade.
05:30 Deep sharpening:
Deep sharpening is ideal when the leather is no longer enough, if the edge is very worn you will have to reform an edge, you can do this with #360 sandpaper or also with a fine sharpening stone.
On sandpaper it is not necessary to apply too much pressure.
07:26 How to sharpen gouges:
I show you how to sharpen different types of gouges, the deep sharpening and the sharpening with leather are different movements, that's why I show you the deep sharpening movement first in case you need it.

🤣🤣 yes.
When you use 80 grit sandpaper for the leather, small abrazive fragments will stuck inside the leather, so your strop is useless 🤷♂️
Yes, it is possible but it is the easiest method I have found to remove this paint. Honestly, I don't think that the grains of the paper go in that deep and in the event that some go in, they will come out with the first passes of the knives. In any case, it works very well for me, it gives an impeccable sharpening.
