    I believe it was developed by Alfa as the Tonale and Dodge created the hornet after the development.

      Came here to say this. From what I recall Alfa developed this and then corporate yoinked it for the Hornet because Dodge hasn't had a meaningful new product in years and the dealers were screaming. The Alfa crowd wasn't too happy, mostly because they forecasted that people would say exactly what they're saying (you can get 9/10s of it elsewhere for much less).

      @@EChid Dodge has not had a meaningful new product in literal DECADES. Do not forget that the Challanger and Charger were built on the DaimlerChrysler LX platform, which is basically a W210 (late 90s E-Class) underneath.... The have used the Expensive Mercedes suspension since 2004 because they cannot come up with anything better.... Truly a pathetic brand, if you ask me.

  • @SFOsmo

    As the owner of Tonale for 7 months, I have thoughts on both pros and cons. First, I did very good research for luxury PHEV SUVs in the market with $55K USD as maximum to spend. You only have two cars to go with comparable size and full features, Lexus NX and Alfa Romeno Tonale. Lexus NX is a bit more expensive than 55K with full features, but you can count on Japanese quality. For me, I decided to drive something different as driving three Toyota-made cars in the past. Tonale is honestly so-so after driving 7 months, however it's not as bad as what folks talk about in the clip. It's got plenty of power and features and excellent design as pros. If you worry about cons, engine may sound a bit noisy when turning back from electric mode. The use of paddle shift is obsolete as told here. Unless otherwise, as long as you want PHEV and the entry-level luxury with limited budget, Tonale is an excellent choice. Oh, I love the red calipers with my black Veloce too. :-)

      Also, quit supporting electrical vehicles of all stripes. Outside of an in-city commuter they make zero sense due to complexity, repair, durability, and personal freedom. Besides which the used market for these monstrosities is going to be nil. You think a Range Rover and sports cars get deferred maintenance? Wait till they need battery packs. Got the wife one of these several months ago, she loves it, I find it practical yet still enjoyable to drive (in fairly a non-sporty way), and it's devoid of pretty much any reasons to want to rapidly drive yourself off a bridge, like you'd get if you found yourself in something like a CRV. If you need to go fast to pass or get up to speed it will easily do so, but it's not a "fast" vehicle. Basically if you find yourself wanting a sports car but needing a compact SUV for practical reasons, this is a pretty good option that won't make you feel like you really poorly compromised or lost out on anything enjoyable like a minivan or anything with a CVT would.

    • @afterburn2600
      @afterburn2600 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I'm upvoting, so don't get me wrong - I like your take...but let me counter with the fact that for $6k USD less than the Veloce trim you can get into a top trim Outback Touring XT that is near as can be called as fast, has way more usable room, has significantly more capable suspension, and probably won't depreciate like a rock falling in thin air. We have an Onyx XT that is a couple years old at this point. The tech is admittedly sub-par, but the rest of the experience is really very good. The oomph is way more than you'd ever expect and the self-driving bits are fantastic. It's not a sports car, but that's why we have more than 1 car. Edit: I guess the gas mileage is the huge elephant in the room of my argument.

    • @fpnbrian
      @fpnbrian 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@afterburn2600 I'm not familiar with them, but some quick searching and reviews say that Subaru isn't in the same category of performance or handling, the Tonale appears at least 1-2 seconds faster 0-60, and possibly 3 (seeing different numbers reported). Also the Tonale has 3 trim levels, the Veloce is the top trim, and all of them do (or at least did in October when we got hers) qualify for the $7500 federal rebate, plus manufacturer rebates, plus lower trim level pricing means that you at least could, maybe still can pick up a Tonale for 10-11k below what they show in this video...

    In most use cases PHEVs also have the lowest lifetime carbon emissions of any power train as most people simply do not take enough long trips each year to utilize the larger battery of a full BEV, thus you have wasted production emissions for a bigger battery.

In the city I have enough renge to go full electric and when I go to see my faimily in Poland (~400km) I do not need to stop to charge and I have a benefit of extra power from the electric motor when I overtake on a highway. The only challenge is to find a resonably priced PHEV as some brands wants a high premium over petrol versions.

    Funny about the front license plate holder. I had a 2011 Camaro that didn't have one. Never put a front plate on it and never got any grief over it. I live in BC and we're supposed to have front plates. Drove it for 3 years and the only mention of it was crossing the border into the US.

    I traded my 2016 Dodge Challenger SXT w/52k miles for $12.5k to get my 2024 Hornet R/T, which lowered my out the door cost to $39.5k. Without the trade-in, I wouldn't have been able to afford it. I was spending $100 a month on 87-octane fuel with the Chanenger. Even though the Hornet requires 92-octane, I'm only spending $25 dollars a month. Hornet's turbo gets quite hot when running around in "Sport" mode, and I've made it a habit to open the hood when I get home to help cool off the 1.3L.

You can get a Stelvio for the same price (if not cheaper when they are trying to get rid of them) for more space and you don't have to worry about all the issues that these have been having (hornet as well). I am 100% with Thomas on PHEV or pure ICE being the only play right now. With charging networks, standards, and battery tech, we are in a transitional phase and things are going to change rapidly. I would not want to have an EV only vehicle right now. I like that you can reserve battery capacity and use it when you want to. For around town, the range is enough for most day to day commuting. I need this in minivan form, then I would have it alongside my Giulia.

    • @MLHunt
      @MLHunt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Disagree that it's 'the only play right now'. May not be the best choice for everyone, but for many drivers it's already a better option compared to ICE. We went all EV 2 years ago and neither of us ever wants to own an ICE vehicle again. That the tech is still developing rapidly only means that my next EV will be an even better choice relative to ICE.

    • @pieswimmer1
      @pieswimmer1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    • @MLHunt
      @MLHunt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@pieswimmer1 I tend to buy cars and keep them until the wheels fall off and the residual value is close to 0 in any case. Most of the depreciation of most cars occurs in the first few years of ownership, so buying a car and getting rid of it after a few years has always seemed like a mug's game to me. So this isn't really a concern for me.
      The car will only be worthless if I plan to sell it. I plan to keep it until its range has degraded to a point at which it no longer serves my needs, which shouldn't be anytime soon.
      Why should the improvement in battery tech in new cars impact the utility of a car I own already? I charge at home 90+% of the time and very rarely need to drive >100 miles in a day. So the car I have should serve me well into the future even with some range degradation. Why would I get rid of it as long as it serves my needs, even if newer cars charge faster and go further on a charge? I honestly don't understand people's thinking on this.

      I have owned a PHEV, BEV, HEV, and gas-only vehicle in the last year.
      The PHEV is the most practical by a landslide.
      BEV has one major downside - but it’s on the way up - charging on the road absolutely sucks, it’s just not ready for most people yet. Charging at home is FANTASTIC though, so if you have the option it’s not a bad one.
      HEV is still a great choice, great efficiency, affordability, reliability, and power.
      Gas-only is such a crappy way to be in 2024.

    • @MLHunt
      @MLHunt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FuncleChuck I love my EVs and can't see ever owning a petrol vehicle again, but they still only really work well for people who can charge at home and/or or have relatively low-mileage use cases. For all people complain about the public charging networks though, they've gotten a lot better even in the past couple years since we got ours, and at the current rate of development owning one will be entirely suitable for most Americans.

    I think based on the few Italian flag applications on the side mirrors and below the shift knop (and I think in the back bumper lower part middle) this is a Veloce Tributo Italiano Trim. Not sure if that one is a standalone trim version or an option within the higher Veloce trim. I know that there is currently specific TRUBUTO ITALIANO trim for the 100th Anniversary of Alfa Romeo.
    PHEV is nice but I have concerns regarding the fact the cumbustor engine only kicks in at higher speed/rpm without the oil temp being at least at 70 Degrees Celsius- that doesn't seem healthy for the engine durability in the long run

    10:40 lol my Volvo gives a warning if u don’t burn dinosaurs for long enough, that ur gas is getting old, and turns the ICE engine on by default. I hope other cars have a similar warning, particularly for those that burn premium… cause one thing that I don’t hear talked about much, is u do still gotta take care of the ICE bits of a PHEV, and ice engines like to be driven. But if u only ever turn the engine on for short bursts, or it’s being asked for high output with zero warmup, while automakers stretch service intervals “because the ICE gets used less”, well u might have more to worry about than just the high voltage battery at the end of the warranty.
    And while I want more PHEV selection on the market, both the tonale and hornet are at a rough price point. The Koreans are cheaper and more mature. The Toyotas are king if u can wait and can find a dealer that doesn’t charge ADM. and if u really wanted something sporty, the V60 polestar is not a lot more money. More power, more range, and most importantly, a very mature product with a drivetrain that’s been around since the mid 2010s
