  • Here is our first game of Altar of Freedom. A wonderful little rule set, we had a lot of fun learning the rules. Can’t wait to progress the armies now 😀

Nice to see an unfamiliar ruleset being demonstrated. Seems to have some interesting mechanics - the turn clock giveth and the turn clock taketh away.

Great to see some non GW content. The miniatures and terrain all look top notch.

Thank you for the sub. Yes I do have plans to be filming more battle reports for Altar of Freedom, although I need to get my painting on as I will be looking to do the next scenario. It may be a while but ill get there lol

Interested to know what scenario next for AoF? I am painting two armies for this rule set so am in big learning mode watching any battle reports available to understand the rules. From what I have seen I really like to ‘army’ scale and the emphasis on command and control rather than minutiae of engagement.

Yes it’s exactly that command and control, something you don’t get very often in wargaming in my opinion. This was our first game and was just the starter battle in the rule book. The next scenario requires about double the amount of stands again so iv got some painting to do now lol. Hope vid has been helpful 😀

Yeah they are. Bases at a army general level so it’s a lot more bigger picture than a lot of the other historical games we play, which I liked 👍

Very nice batrep. Any chance that we’ll get to see another Altar of Freedom battle soon?
Can you explain the time clock a bit more? From what I see, each scenario has a fixed set of game turns and you allocate points each turn to win the time clock, which seems to start each turn at 12. The player with the highest bid gets the turn clock. Then you roll d6 to determine how much to reduce the time clock. This sets how fast a turn lasts. The remaining points are allocated to your units, and both sides start with their highest allocated unit taking its turn. Then the clock is run down by another d6. Play continues until the turn clock expires, at which point the turn ends. Is this how it works or have I missed something?

Hey Jonathan. Yes it is very likely we will do another game. Although will want to do the next scenario which means building on the army’s we have. Problem with that is I’m currently suck on a few other projects so may be a while lol 😂
Yes the time clock is a n odd mechanic however it really gives flavour to the game. The idea is that the player that controls the clock can control the length of each turn which could mean you don’t get to activate all your troop or do all the things you had planned to do in that turn. Or alternatively you can make the turn longer (works both ways). I think you have the basics of it in your comment. Each time you call out your bids to move your units you roll a D6 the player that controls the turn clock then picks the number out of the two dice rolls to take off the turn clock number for that turn. When the turn clock runs out that turn is finished and you start the next turn.
      Hope that kinda makes sense

Yeah really good game, I need to expand the armies now to play the next scenario. Downloaded them rules as a PDF cost about £15 for something like that, well worth the money.

    Nice 6 mm game

Do all the troops have to have a label? That totally destroys the visual for me,!

You could stick the labels to the bottom of the bases but that could be a little faffy in game. You do need mark which unit is which Division to be able to play the game as they all have different states etc.
