Leitrim Border Roads Unofficially Reopened, Ireland 1991

  • A number of roads closed by the British Army are reopened by local people on both sides of the border.
Leitrim is the only border county without an official road into Northern Ireland. Some people refer to the blockade between the villages of Rossinver in Couny Leitrim and Garrison in County Fermanagh as part of Ireland’s Berlin Wall.
Locals from both sides of the border have decided enough is enough and opened the road themselves. Their action was mirrored at two other crossings in County Monaghan and County Donegal in a day of action organised by the organisation Irish National Congress to highlight the hardship and inconvenience caused by the closed roads.
The roads were originally closed by the British Army as a security measure. It is claimed this action has split communities and even families. In some case people must take journeys of up to 30 miles to reach places that might only be a mile apart.

I remember this day very well, my friends and I were on our way back from our hard works with a van load of money, lose money, borrowed money, blue money, as we drove into this roadway we were in a hurry to get back for our homes for our lunch. We had a hold up until the concrete slabs were drilling down to dust and the road was opened, the very Gardie waved us through with a smile and a wave we continued our journey allowing us to continue on our journey to total happiness and to none stop holidays, fast cares, money in the bank, Like cousin Jo Walsh said Life Has Been Good So Far and my friend and I am very thankful

My mum used to smuggle goods during WW2 from Rossinver to Garrison, I know that barricade well. I once found a book of paintings done by an army officer who was in charge when the road was blown up. One of his paintings shows the road been blown up with the Leitrim hills in the background.

The Irish border is an obscenity imposed by a foreign power whose ongoing delusions of Empire grandeur prevent a relationship of equals between these two islands. I respect all those who fought to remove this border and end British domination of Ireland.

Blame the unionists and the people hundreds of years ago who put those twats there. We'd be more than happy to give northern Ireland to the Republic but for the sake of democracy we have to listen to the unionists who are becoming a minority on their own turf. Soon I suspect a majority of people in Northern Ireland will want to join the Republic and this can finally be put to rest.

Controlled explosion is simply a tool. A simple stone can make a tool. Nearly anything, can be used as a tool, which can be used in a way that is nurturing, or not, concerning the parties involved. It's a matter of intent. I was speaking of the practical application of explosives in a controlled way, using lead blankets over strategic spots where small charges are placed in drilled holes. Like is done on construction sites in the city, to break up bedrock to build foundations for skyscrapers.

The chap using the pneumatic hammer probably probably learned how to use it by picking it up and pressing the button. No special course needed. No road safety awareness course required either.
