I had not heard that the GREAT Shuichi "Ponta" Murakmi had died. What a terrible loss. This trio were the players on the very first thing I ever heard from Kazumi Watanabe. It was a live concert radio broadcast from San Francisco in 1984. I had never heard ANYTHING like them before. But I sure have SINCE then...
well Cheers this is coming from the perspective of the bass players older brother because that's my little brother Greg playing bass and I know these guys.. hell they called me a Fusion player but that's not really what it is you got to understand the way the business works they have to call it something they can't have music I should say they can't sell music that doesn't have an acceptable or even semi acceptable place to file it in.. just look around can you realize that this so called fusion has been around for a long long time... For example Stan Getz legendary sax player musician became well known for playing bossa nova but that's not all he plays... No no no You ever heard a guy named Garth Brooks..?... Big time country star... His favorite band is Rush... And Roy Clark... That's right the guitar player on hee haw.. Is from Washington DC and is worth checking out... Talk about fusion.. Oh yeah speaking of odd times aka unusual time divisions.. Check out the hit songs of Burt Bacharach of course along with Hal David... You'll be shocked and how many( and I do mean many in the few) times he stays with conventional time signatures.. Sooner or later it'll all be called music look at history and you'll see that we've come a long way but we still have a long way to go here's to music .

@naikanomtom ur right, I should have elaborated. I meant that the j-fusionists are like the oddities of music, "are they rock? are they jazz? what the hell am I listening to?" When I first listened to Jeff Beck, WR, and RTF I thought the latter, but my mind was blown away. I was upset though because it took my uncles who were "in the know" to get me into j-fusion. - hope that explained things (oh, and that also explains my screen-name!)
