Best funk track ever, the improv trading sections between Marcus and Kazumi are pure magic and the main groove and its many variants just kick serious fusion all over this cut…I bought all the Mobo records when they came out and still prize them in my vinyl collection. Thanks for this digital post, it saves my records hahahaha!

Funkiest jam I've ever heard! The Bros. Johnson with several zeros at the end of it! Riddim twins Sly & Robbie stretching the boundaries of funk like a sweater two sizes too small! Omar and Marcus in the pocket too? When I bought this, no one I knew had this album or even heard of Kazumi. Thanx to your comments, I now know I'm not crazy to feel like I do about this record. I feel vindicated!

My first exposure to KW was in 1979 with To-Chi-Ka. It also coincided with my first visit to Japan. Fast forward to the MOBO series and the sound and textures have evolved. An underrated masterpiece. RIP Robbie Shakespeare ❤️

The track ‘Cokumo Island’ is one of my all time fusion favourites. My teenager son was listening to ‘Black Canal’ just the other day. Nothing to do with me.

Heaven exists! And it was recorded in 1986. What a brilliant idea for a double-album! No more info. Listen, and do your homework. Enjoy!

I saw this tour w/ Robbie Shakespear in Dallas at Poor David's Pub. Sat 15 feet away from Kazumi and proceeded to forget everything I ever learned. One of my top 5 shows and I've seen 'em all. Cheers!

I also saw Kazumi in Dallas. I don't remember the name of the place. A small place in 'lower greenville". He had two shows and stayed for both. During the break I approached Kazumi to ask him what "mobo" meant. It means modern boy. Great show and an underrated, lesser known talent.

    • @GlennMichaelThompson

It's crazy how much musical talent is out there which most people are unaware of! Fortunately I was introduced to Kazumi Watanabe's music at a young age. Haven't seen/heard him live yet though. So many underrated musicians deserve to be heard by appreciative audiences. I once attended a performance of Sonny Sharrock at a club in Montreal not long before he passed away. There were maybe 40 or so people in the audience. A great show, but sad turnout for someone who's an icon in the jazz guitar field.

In the 1920's there was a fashion during Japanese young which was inspired by the western culture. Those young people were called "mobo" and "moga" which means modern boy and modern girl.

One of my very favorites. For anyone wondering, this is track 2 on the Mobo II LP. It does not appear on Mobo 1 which is pictured here. The albums I have are the US records, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were big differences in the Japan releases. Both records are treasures.

It's Aug 27th, 2019... The MOBO music sounds the same as when I bought the ALBUM back in 1982-83 while living in SW Houston, TX... B&O turntable!! [For you young people] :-) Great concept two drummers, two guitars, one "Young Marcus Miller" bass player and the late and great Micheal Brecker on SAX!! I have the remastered CD version that NEVER leaves my house!!! "Armed Guards" Hey JazzSphere-thanks for the post!!! Peace

Im proud to say i was one of the few that saw him in Dallas Tx w/ simon Phillips and Jeff Berlin I believe, its been a while , anyway they made a statement that night . They blew away all your previous conceptions of what you thought the envelope was and then went and tromped on it . I had recently seen the jazz players of the day and was jaw dropped by him while working sound . I also remember he played a Steinberger and plugged straight into a half space rack of processing and into the board . I know b/c i was the house sound guy . And .. BTW the guitar tone was amazing , like eric johnson or those that spent hours setting up gtr rigs . I remember the Arc Angels were the worst prima donnas in those days. Kazumi and his band had no check set up and sounded like 'Yes" in the round or what you would think was a magic 'tune' for the board .

I remember the day I bought this record back in 1983. I had no idea what it would be...none. I put it on, and the coolest version of "Walk, Don't Run" I've ever heard in my life enveloped my living room. I instantly thought "Thank God! He's not just another limp-noodling, LA jazz scene, soulless and DULL as hell LA-ish player!" I was thrilled - I thought I had stumbled upon the future of fusion guitar. Alas, it was not to be...Kazumi has been seduced and neutered and hypnotized and has fallen asleep...like the rest of them. But we still have these 2 Magnificent albums!!!

Same here. In '84 whilst looking through the jazz bins at the record store I spotted Mobo l&ll. Had never heard of Kazumi but what the Hell, it looked interesting and I HAD heard of Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar. What an album! If Kazumi never put out another album these two would endure.

Hmm... just checked. They have Mobo, cost is anywhere from $46 to almost $300. It's ridiculous. I'm going to see if a friend who lives in the US can make some orders from Amazon.com on my behalf. It's bound to be less! I hope! :-P

That's crazy. Mobo I & II is selling as one CD in the US for 12 bucks used. Can you...ahem....find it on a torrent? ;-) I only have mobo splash on cd.
I thought you can purchase from amazon US even if you live in CA. I buy stuff from amazon UK all the time.

    • @GlennMichaelThompson
      @GlennMichaelThompson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Pristine S. -Used to be able to buy from .com, but not for several years now. I contacted a friend who lives in the US to order the Mobo 1 & 2 for $12.53. He can bring it to me on his next visit or mail it to me. I could go through amazon prime.... but they also have different stock and prices, as well as duty and taxes if it crosses the border. I'm not computer savvy enough for exploring torrents. :/
