    I Like these vids generally speaking. They are well edited. Interesting. But I always get the sense that they just abruptly end. I never leave ultimately satisfied by them. There’s a turn in this one at the end where the expert mentions that there is still good design happening now. And I get that this piece is about the Trajan font but I wanted to see where modern typography is going. At least that’s what the flow of the video promised. Of the point was to eulogize Trajan as a font that had its heyday and now is relegated to wannabe b movie postres then this video essay needed to conclude a little stronger. Perhaps speculating as to what the future “Trajan” might be.

    • @BaldCondensed
      @BaldCondensed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Gotham became the new Trajan of movie posters after Barack Obama used it extensively in his campaign collaterals and won the US presidency. One of the few times a political event triggered a design trend.

    My mother was a graphic designer in the 80s, then became a stay-at-home mother in the 90s and by the time she was ready to go back in the 2000s, her craft was totally obsolete. It's a little sad and I was also so amazed at what you can do with exacto knives, camera film, photocopiers & projectors.
    She hated screens and refused to upskill and pivoted to commissioning wedding dresses in the end.

      Honestly, you DO think that, you just don't always realize why. You can tell things about production value, about what's high-end or not, about what's a genre you like or not- all by the font choices. But unless you're into graphic design, you might not realize WHY you made that snap decision in your mind.

    Movie posters AND fonts??? Sign me up!
    I really appreciate that the video addresses that just because fonts are computer-generated now they're not automatically worse, but I do wish that movies with the appropriate budget would opt for hand-drawn fonts and make movie posters more interesting. And not just the fonts. While I completely understand the usefulness of certain types of designs and what they communicate to potential audiences, I still wish that we saw more diverse and out-of-the-box poster designs.

      Jeremy Davis well we don't see that much movies with red green or yellow purple pairs. You had to be either Mario Bava, Wes Anderson, or any other visually quirky director to use them. My guess is that blue and orange is somewhat more natural for us, because we see them as natural lightings (orange for the sun/usual lights, blue is for the shadow/night), but there might be more to that.

    I miss cool video game posters from back in the day, especially Nintendo Power. When game magazines used to be relevant in the 90s, some of them had free posters & it was exciting to discover a really cool one you'd be proud to tape up your bedroom wall. Unless it's a crappy one like Quest 64 or something.

    Really good video. I didn’t even bother fully reading “the new movie by that acclaimed director of that other movie” until almost the end of the video. Just like in real life, I’m not going to actually read all the words on a movie poster or trailer. I might just look for some familiar names. Or, I might do even less and only look for visual cues like the video shows for the different genres. It’s incredibly efficient at communicating information. People probably step outside of their comfort zones more with streaming services since the titles offered are on a leveler playing field, and we’re usually not watching a full trailer or viewing the official movie poster before clicking on Netflix tv show or movie.

    Five or six years later, it's still a great video ! Thanks Vox. Just a question - what are the fonts used in the examples given at the beginning : 'The New movie by the acclaimed director ....' ? It would be nice to know.

    Vox should make a video on TH-cam comments and how different topics make a comment section.

    There should be option to comment on Trajan font just for this video. That would make it even more satisfying to watch.

    You should do a video about the rise of cast ensemble posters over the more stylized (imo better) posters, especially in the superhero movie space.

    Thank you Vox for this video about a typeface. Did Carol Twombly who invented Trajan make any money on it? Did Adobe? How does that work? Some years ago, I watched a show, I think it was on PBS, about the invention and use of Helvetica. It "ruled" for quite awhile. The New Yorker has its own typeface; can anyone use that typeface?

    It’s interesting how certain factors will determine what aesthetics things will be assigned. The ones that have specific ties like sci-fi or action vs something like this that rose from “epic” to standard haha.

    This video is a nice remix of videos made years ago by Kirby Ferguson. Look him up on youtube as he's most well known for his series Everything is a Remix. I guess someone at Vox was a fan and decided it was worth remixing. Including the context for the font's creation and rise and change in use and popularity were good info. I'd definitely would watch more like this.
