    In this video we share with you a possible fix if you find your Toyota 22RE motor seems to have a hard time starting under a cold start. For my new used vehicle purchase, an 85 Toyota 4runner, my engine would have to crank over for quite some time before it would finally start running so I started doing some research on the problem and made this video of my experience with fixing the issue.

      My experience with the 22RE engine is limited. I don't know why your engine dies when it get to operating temperature. Maybe ask your question on a Toyota forum and hopefully someone can point you in the right direction to fix the issue.

    dude, this is the exact problem I was having. The engine was running rough and the fuel pump was 25+ years old so I replaced it. Engine runs smooth now but is hard to start. The thermo switches are OE and the one on the left (looking toward the cockpit) had a broken connection on the female side, so I replaced it. Now it works! Thanks!!! (1983 Celica GTS)

    thanks for this great video, my 87 toyota just got hard to start and you showed me where to begin, it ended up being the connector at the temp sensor had come off the sensor just a little bit , metal retainer is gone, i put a zip tie around the connector and another one from that around a different sensor to keep it from backing off again...that cured my problem!!!i checked the resistance on the sensor and it was 33ohms

    I enjoy these videos. I don't have a 4Runner and probably won't. In the late 70's I had a 67 Landcruiser.
    The video quality of your latest offerings is probably the best of anyone's that I watch. This was outstanding and really professional.
    I have decided it must be a Regional thing -- I have always used the term " turn over" for "crank." I have noticed though that at least as many people use it to mean "start," as you did. I just need to think about the context, and make sure I understand which way they mean it.
    'Til the next one......

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dave, thanks for the nice compliment. We appreciate it! It's funny that you mentioned my word choice because I actually gave this some thought. You're right that the terms "turn over" or "crank" are used by people to mean the engine is starting, but what it really means is the engine cycles when you turn the ignition key letting you know the battery and starter are in working order and the engine isn't frozen.

    My 22re engine has a problem starting. ONLY when its hott outside and its. Been sitting in the sun. If its cloudy and below 70 degrees it starts like a charm. If its sunny and above 70 degrees it wants to stumble. I have to hold the key to the start position abit longer and then it will start up everytime. If i forget and dont hold the key a lil longer it will die. And fire up when i give it gas the next time. So its like the opposite of alot of peoples problems. However after driving when its hott. I can turn off and start without any issues. Im thinking to much vapor in my gas tank maybe my charcoal canister is going bad. Still learning about working on my own vehicle. Timmy you have helped me more times then not ! I cant thank you enough for the info. Even if i have an issue that isnt the main issue your diagnosing in your videos. I always seem to learn more the more i watch! Im currently getting ready to do the valve cover gaskets in my 5vze and will be using your video. My 22re has some minor issues but i have been putting them on the back burner till i get my toyota t100 dialed in. Going to work on the 22re more afterwards. Ill be checking the ohms on my switches then! But i have a feeling my problem is fuel related. When its hott outside and it doesnt start when its hott. I get a smell of fuel. Almost like my engine is slightly flooded.

    Some issues I got with rough starting and some times shutdowns was due to a bad prime fuel pump, where the fuel filter screws on. It would probably allow air into the fuel system.

    I found your video while trying to diagnose the exact Same issue on my 85 Dolphin and while I feel you have provided the best plausible answer and fix, I wanted to share something else I noticed by happenstance that I'm hoping may give you a more complete picture of whatever is causing this issue to arise. I've had the hard start issue for some time and it's generally anytime the ride has sat long enough to cool down. However, I noticed a strange occurrence on the times I required a jump due to leaving my lights on while away from the vehicle or some such.... When getting a jump from another vehicle with a strong current going through the cables, there doesn't seem to be any issues and she fires right up... what are your thoughts on that?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have also noticed if the battery is strong and engine is turning over faster, it does for the most part start quicker but it's not always 100% better.

    Got an 85 4runner. In the middle installing a new timing chain and metal guides. I wish someone told me about the possible broken plastic guides that come in 22re's before I bought. Negotiate the price.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know because I've never tried it the other way. I just know the way I decided to do it to verify if the cold start injector was working. By reversing it, I could clearly see if the injector was shooting fuel out.

  • @TheJadeWilk
    @TheJadeWilk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey I was hoping you could help me with a cold start issue I've been having on my 1986 4Runner. Basically it takes a little while of cranking in the morning before it will start. When the engine is warm, it will start just fine. So far I've replaced the following: fuel filter, cold start time switch, water temp switch, removed and cleaned the fuel injectors with new seals. I've used my multimeter to test the AFM, circuit opening relay, specs for cold start time switch and water temp switch. If I short the fuel pump check connector it still takes some time cranking before it will start. The way that I have found it will start with the first key turn every time when it's cold is this: short the fuel pump check connector, connect a fuel injector tester to the battery and send 3 short pulses to the cold start injector. This leads me to believe that fuel pressure is ok, fuel pump is working, cold start injector works. I'm thinking there is either an issue with the wiring from the thermo time switch to the ECU or wiring to the cold start injector. Any thoughts? (Sorry for the novel. I was trying to explain the best I could)

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly think you know more than me in regards to diagnosing this issue. I wish I could offer something more, but I don't have any suggestions for you. My cold starting issue is intermittent. Sometimes it starts as soon as I turn the key, other times it has to crank for quite a while. I have noticed that if the battery is cranking strong, it does start quicker, usually. I have been using a Ctek battery charger on my rig because I don't use it enough for the charging system to keep my battery strong.

    • @TheJadeWilk

      @@TimmyTheToolman Hey just wanted to update this since I hate it when people post problems but never come back and describe the resolution. Turns out it was my cold start time switch after all. I was getting voltage at the cold start injector harness during cranking. The only thing it wasn't getting was the ground signal which is sent from the cold start time switch. Using my multimeter everything on my cold start time switch was within spec, that's why I had originally ruled it out. Put a new one on and it's fired up first try every morning since. A sincere thank you for all of your great videos!

    Hey great videos. I'm trying to find out what the little white adjust valve is right next to the cold start injector. Has the little spring under it. I turned it and now it runs rough. Can't seem to adjust it back to the right setting. Also any suggestions on the best shop manual for these old girls. Mine is an 85 efi with a turbo.
    Thanks in advance,

      That thing with the spring is for the AC system. When you turn on the AC, your idle will kick up higher to compensate for the extra load on the engine when the AC clutch is engaged. That plastic adjuster with the spring underneath it allows you to adjust how much idle kicks up when you run the AC. That shouldn't have affected the running of your motor unless you were running the AC at the time. The best manual is the Toyota FSM. You can find them for sale on Ebay.

Every time I renewed the coolant and burped the system, more air always works its way out over the next few days. I saw evidence of this by the level in my reservoir dropping. I just top off the coolant in the reservoir a few days later and I'm good to go.

    Hey man I have a 92 22re pickup just like yours and it has been a pain recently. It has only been starting up in warm weather so I assumed it was the cold start injector, after cleaning it and putting it back to check if it worked, it sprayed all over the cardboard after I turned the key for a quick second. Therefore I new that was not an issue, yet after putting everything back together, it wouldn’t start, only crank. I then checked the lower electrical connect with my ohms meter just like you did and I got 41 which I assume is plenty good. I assume it is clicking and the cold start switch is working. Hey Dan, I bought the cold start switch and ECU temp sending unit from 22RE Performance and we provide links in the video description. For all our videos, we always provide helpful information in the video description and quite often a pinned comment too.

      Yep, it's pretty pricey.

      I was thinking the same thing but it appears that was the case. I still had a cold start problem after replacing the cold start injector switch. After replacing the coolant temp sensor as well, no more cold start problems. I'm glad I bought both from 22RE Performance.

    There is more paint on the engine than the whole truck

      And your point is what? Just trolling? If you're going to comment on any of our other videos, please make it something relative other than commenting on some insignificant fact.

    “Turn” over,doesn’t that mean it’s Cranking,..why don’t you just say “Start”?

      Cranking is the engine trying to start, turning over means it started… don’t let this terminology throw you off.

      That's our style Carlo. We gear our videos to the absolute beginner and the extra information conveyed can help them understand what we're doing, why we're doing it and how we're doing it. If you use other videos from us, you'll either have to fast forward through information you don't need or just find another channel that fits your attention span a little bit better.
