Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa's much-loved 19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus's score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding 'vision scene' and the famously bravura and breath-taking Act III pas de deux.
Carlos Acosta's production was created for The Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company to the stage. Acosta created new choreography for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of Tim Hatley's vibrant designs. - บันเทิง

Saw her dance yesterday. Stunning performance. She is an enchanting Kitri and her interpretation of the role spot on, demure but determined. Alexander Campbell was a fabulously ardent Basilio. What an adorable couple. Bravo Carlos Acosta and as for Fumi Kaneko? Wow!!
I like these plain, worklit rehearsals much more than the ones with the fancy lighting and camera movements.

I always find ballet far more amazing when performed informally or in practice. The costume and stage ruins the expectations.

Eureka Mreum No problem! I’m a big fan of Yasmine, so I’m very excited that she will be dancing Kitri!
Some of even the great Principals just don’t seem as well suited for certain roles. I’m sure Akane sizzles finally as Kitri - but that fire is hard to add in when you’re so delicate and ethereal. For me, it’s the opposite issue with Nela - perfect, extraordinary technician but she just doesn’t seem believable as Giselle or even Sleeping Beauty. She makes a great Kitri and Swanilda (Coppelia) Akane would be wonderful as Juliette. Some great dancers can stretch to virtually every role. Darcey was like that. Osipova is utterly believable and inhabits every role to the point where she disappears into her character (plus the technique). All the RB Principals have the technique to dance every role, Frankie Hayward wouldn’t be miscast in anything even though she’s a bit smaller. Fumi is amazing but only time will tell if she’d be believable in every role. I can see her in Swan Lake. Kitri is tough because you need to rely on your bravura and abandon and grand allegro and exaggerated lines - can’t be shy. Plisetskaya was a great Kitri.

Akane is a very beautiful dancer. I don't see a Kitri here, though.
I feel like she lacks the fire that is needed for this role... the fire Marianela has.
Great technique, but I think her Kitri should be more sassy

I love Akane but I think no one is better then Marianella Nunez as Kitri.
Akane is too gentle and fragile for fiery Kitri.
She needs more speed, power, fire and letting go. It needs to be an exotic, slightly seductive and charming spanish woman. Both instructors gave these point on advice. Her understanding of the music is also lacking. When you see the coach is counting, that is a problem her movement is not accentuating the beat.

@@zhicongdaykin5289 Kitri requires virtousity, energy, and punctuation. This is why I prefer the Moscow dancing style for Don Quixote. Bolshoi-trained ballerinas learn from the best coaches for this role. The current dancers who capture the Moscow dancing tradition are Nina Kapstova, Maria Alexandrova, Natalia Osipova, and Krysavona.
Akane's facial expressions are also not emotive. And her dance movements are too reserved. I'm not sure why Darcey Bussel is teaching this role when she never danced it herself.
@@helenwang9739 They didn't choose Osipova because she has been on leave for a couple months to perform and create a ballet production in Australia. But I agree. Akane doesn't have the personality for the role so I can see why it is not natural to her. Yasmine seems like she has the right energy and dynamitism but she can be a little stiff in her upper body. I'm surprised Laura Morera isn't even cast as Kitri! She is perfect as Mercedes. So, she would be a fantastic Kitri because she has the right personality and artistry. Hopefully in the future, the next filming will either be Osipova (if she is available) or Yasmine. I think Akane would be better for a ballet like Sleeping Beauty because she is more reserved.
@@helenwang9739 She came back for the opening night because Sky-arts is filming her for a documentary there. But I read a Russian interview where she stated she went on leave for the Winter season to divert her time to her projects. But I agree! I'm hoping they film her for Don Quixote. I know they are filming her and David Hallberg for Romeo and Juliet as well as Yasmine and Matthew. But Yasmine's and Matthew's will be shown in the cinema. Hopefully, they release videos of Osipova and Hallberg. They have an iconic partnership in this role.
@@helenwang9739 She could have also been her replacement should there have been an injury. I wish I could go but I cannot because of my schedule. You're lucky! I just wish it was shown in the cinema so I could see it. I guess I'll have to wait next time.
Akane is a wonderful dancer but Don Q really isn't the RB's forte imo. Way to cutesy. I think the Russian companies at bringing the fire and pepper to this, although I loved Aurelie Dupont as Kitri but POB's orchestra play so damn slow.
Marianella Nunez is the best Kitri
No disrespect to Takada but this has to be the most insipid Kitri I've ever seen. Too decorative, too pretty, too much like the Dresden-china-doll-Kitris that the Paris Opera Ballet throw on stage. We need more Spanish brio, more Latina flamboyance, more señorita sassiness, more Seville street dust kicked up under flamenco heels! Hell, where's Osipova? Make HER do it!

Aves, I agree. I saw Takada as Odette/Odile and she left me stone cold. Very fine technically but her characterizations were a stereotype. Kitri is not her role, and I was shocked to see her cast as Manon. I think she could be a good Nikiya.
The only exciting thing in this video is the beauty, charisma and intelligence of Mrs Bussell. The girl rehearsing Kitri makes me go to sleep. Nothing happens. She is of course physically and technnically "chapeau" but it's hard to sense any vibration going through her body and soul. Yes I know it's a rehearsal but that girl won't turn into a seductive, dazzling, sexy Kitri on stage. She just does not have the temperament and the personality for that. I'd watch the performance only if I got paid. Starting from 500 quids though.

Sera Seo she’s not on screen but on stage and Akane brought an airy and playful Kitri. Agree to disagree; Akane is fabulous. You can watch Nuñez’s work on this production if you dislike this one so much. No one is forcing you to watch this but yourself.
