The SLICK GENE identified in Senepol. and other tropical Bo’s Indicus and mapped to chromosome with prolactin, was not found in Angus . back several years ago. Have the well shedding Anggus been genotype d?

William- thanks for the comment. There are a handful of mutations in the prolactin receptor (PRLR) that cause the SLICK phenotype in criollo Bos taurus breeds (such as Senepol) from the Caribbean and Central America. We did not find any DNA marker associations near PRLR on chromosome 20 in the 11 different breeds we looked at. However, we did find associations near prolactin (PRL) on chromosome 23. There were 3,898 Angus animals genotyped for the USDA-Mizzou research. I am sure there are many more animals with hair shedding scores and genotypes in the AGI database.

@@SteakgenomicsBlogspotMU Aha! Thanks for correcting me on the chromosomes with PRLR and PRL in the different breeds

@@SteakgenomicsBlogspotMU More education please . Are the DNA marker associations near PRLR on chromosome 20 that determine SLICK phenotype in Senepol similar or the same as those on 23 that give similar slick phenotype in some Angus? Are such associations also called SNIPS?
