The Art is from the book made by Nils Gulliksson is often old art. This was the first D&D style art that appears in sweden in the 80-s.. he was our first roleplaying illustrator, many of the current Swedish illustrators says he was the reason you started drawing.

It often reminds me of the style in the old MERP rpg, although Nils' art is often a bit more detailed.

Fun fact: most of the illustrations in these books where drawn in the 1980s and 90s. The Forbidden lands use a mashup of all illustrations from the Swedish TTRPG Drakar och Demoner and its many supplements.

Wow, I love this art. It makes me think of an old style choose your own adventure where the world is whatever you imagine it to be. I agree it doesn't evoke a specific character for the campaign world, but perhaps that's not so bad if you're creating the game on the fly.

Agree. I feel like the biggest shortcoming of most rpgs is the lack of artistic consistency. Free League seem to have mostly nailed it though. Symbaroum is a fantastic example. Art is such a huge part of ttrpgs I wish other companies put more care into that aspect.

Contrary to this review NG's art absolutely inspire me. It has a "real" look to it that tells me that this is gonna be a very real looking seudo medieval world.. just with fantastical creatures in it. Wich is my favorite kind. I love Niklas Brandt's art as well but the other books after Raven's Purge sadly used other artists that have a more stylized style that makes it look a bit more like the art in a childrens fantasy book. Maybe they will be more to certain peoples liking but I really miss Brandt and NG's classic "real" style and feel that the other books feel like another setting.

My guess as to the separate pamphlet is two reasons. 1. Pamphlet is ment to be used alot and thusfore will get beat up, spilled on, and saves your big book for the shelf where it's ment to look good. 2. Smaller form factor allows for easier transportation, maybe lays flat easier, and less pages to flip back and forth for more efficient game mastering at table and when prepping.

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It was also a KS stretch goal. I appreciate when the creators include such quick reference. If not a compilation of tables and such, all at the back of the book, then separately in it's own convenient pamphlet like this. Not having either is a con for me. If it has charts and reference tables then consolidate them in one small place for look-up, creators.

It also can be given to players for quick character creation. Which is likely to be needed, since FL is quite deadly.

This seems perfect for a Westmarches style game. If you have a central 'base' then the missing players can be doing 'other' chores or quests.
You could even swap GMs between full adventures to let everyone get a chance to play a character.

Forbidden Lands box set is gorgeous and pretty good, but if you want to run a long campaign in it (especially a hexcrawl sandbox) - then Raven's Purge or Bitter Reach are an absolute must. I thought Raven's Purge was very good and used it in other campaigns. Also, if the Mutant Year Zero system (all those pools of d6s and pushing rolls and such) doesn't appeal, Five Torches Deep, Dungeon World or Worlds Without Numbers are good alternatives. Personally the MYZ system was really not my cup of tea for fantasy; I am glad I got Forbidden Lands, but I'm going to be using it more for stuff like the encounters, castle construction and upgrade rules, and interesting sites.

      I am considering using either
Desolation (Ubiquity's version for fantasy. Desolation as a post apocalyptic -ex High fantasy- setting, has some similarities with FL in lore or ideas, especially as they might manifest mechanically)
or Mythras Core (that grittiness and hit locations etc)
if after we play-test FL we dont like the system (which I suspect we might..theres something not fully 100% for me there)

I actually like that relatively few scripted encounters can occur a particular terrain. Many RPG products shove so much variety into their encounter tables the type of terrain the characters are on loses its unique feel. I think this table can work well. And if a scripted encounters comes up that has been done before, you can either do it again if it's generic enough of an event or simply replace it on the fly with something inspired by the original encounter (to ensure the terrain remains thematically consistent). For instance, my players are never going to encounter a birthing manticore more than once! If that comes up again however, a manticore encounter in general would be appropriate to the terrain.

What I'm really trying to find is charts that would support creating a city like Mordheim that would have random building traits. Like is this house falling apart or in perfect condition, is it haunted, infested with rats, infested with undead, infested with skaven, does it look like it's been burned down, does it look like chaos energies have warped it in one of 100 ways and so on.

I absolutely love the art, but I totally agree that the non-human races are a bit meh. The backstory is fine, and it works pretty well with the hexcrawl of Raven's Purge. I feel like RP is pretty integral to running Forbidden Lands as intended-I don't know why you'd run a true FL campaign without it.

The art doesn't work for me either. Perhaps they were going for an "early" D&D look. I think the creature attacks adds some very interesting variety but it also means you need to have the book open to that entry.
